3-1. Key information

NOTICE

Q To prevent key damage

ODo not drop the keys, subject them to strong shocks or bend them.

ODo not expose the keys to high temperatures for long periods of time.

ODo not get the keys wet or wash them in an ultrasonic washer etc.

ODo not attach metallic or magnetic materials to the keys or place the keys

close to such materials.

ODo not disassemble the keys.

ODo not attach a sticker or anything else to the surface of the electronic key.

ODo not place the keys near objects that produce magnetic fields, such as

TVs, audio systems and induction cookers, or medical electrical equip-

ment, such as low-frequency therapy equipment.

Q Carrying the electronic key on your person (vehicles with smart entry

& start system)

Carry the electronic key 10 cm (3.9 in.) or more away from electric appli-

ances that are turned on. Radio waves emitted from electric appliances

within 10 cm (3.9 in.) of the electronic key may interfere with the key, caus-

ing the key to not function properly.

Q In case of a smart entry & start system malfunction or other key-related

problems (vehicles with smart entry & start system)

Take your vehicle with all the electronic keys provided with your vehicle to

any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable

repairer.

Q When an electronic key is lost (vehicles with smart entry & start sys-

tem)

If the electronic key remains lost, the risk of vehicle theft increases signifi-

cantly. Visit any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or

any reliable repairer immediately with all remaining electronic keys that

were provided with your vehicle.

Q Operation signals

A buzzer (if equipped) sounds and the emergency flashers flash to indicate

that the doors have been locked/unlocked using the smart entry & start sys-

tem or the wireless remote control. (Locked: once; Unlocked: twice)

Q Security feature

If a door is not opened within approximately 30 seconds after the vehicle is

unlocked using the smart entry & start system or the wireless remote control,

the security feature automatically locks the vehicle again.

Q Door lock buzzer (vehicles with wireless remote control and smart entry

& start system)

If an attempt to lock the doors is made when a door is not fully closed, a

buzzer sounds continuously for 5 seconds. Fully close the door to stop the

buzzer, and lock the vehicle once more.

Q If the entry function (vehicles with smart entry & start system) or the

wireless remote control (if equipped) does not operate properly

Q If a symbol indicating one or more doors are open is shown on the multi-

information display

One or more of the doors is not fully closed. The system also indicates which

doors are not fully closed. If the vehicle reaches a speed of 5 km/h (3 mph),

master warning light flashes and a buzzer sounds to indicate that the door(s)

are not yet fully closed.

Make sure that all the doors are closed.

Locking the front doors from the outside without a key

lock system): The driver’s door cannot be locked if either of the door is

open and the key is in the engine switch.

Vehicles with smart entry & start system: The door cannot be locked if

the engine switch is in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode, or the

electronic key is left inside the vehicle.

However, the key may not be detected correctly and the door may be

locked.

Q Impact detection door lock release system (if equipped)

In the event that the vehicle is subject to a strong impact, all the doors are

unlocked. Depending on the force of the impact or the type of accident, how-

ever, the system may not operate.

Q Conditions affecting operation

 Vehicles without smart entry & start system

The wireless remote control function may not operate normally in the follow-

ing situations:

O Near a TV tower, radio station, electric power plant, airport or other facility

that generates strong radio waves

O When carrying a portable radio, cellular phone or other wireless communi-

cation device

O When multiple wireless keys are in the vicinity

O When the wireless key is in contact with, or is covered by a metallic object

O When a wireless key (that emits radio waves) is being used nearby

O When the wireless key has been left near an electrical appliance such as a

personal computer

Q To prevent an accident

Observe the following precautions while driving the vehicle.

Failing to do so may result in a door opening and an occupant falling out,

resulting in death or serious injury.

O Ensure that all doors are properly closed and locked.

ODo not pull the inside handle of the doors while driving.

Be especially careful for the driver’s door, as the door may be opened

even if the inside lock button is in locked position.

O Set the rear door child-protector locks when children are seated in the rear

seats.

Access panels (smart-cab models only)

The access panels (rear door) can be opened using the inside

handle.

Open the front door widely.

The tailgate can be locked/unlocked and opened by the follow-

Q When opening or closing the tailgate

OCheck the safety of the surrounding area, and be careful not to catch fin-

gers etc. in the tailgate.

ODo not allow a child to open or close the tailgate. Doing so may cause the

child’s hand, head, arm or neck to be caught in the tailgate, resulting in

death or serious injury.

OOn an incline, it may be more difficult to open or close the tailgate than on

a level surface.

Also, the tailgate may suddenly open or close. Be careful not to catch fin-

gers etc. in the tailgate.

OWhen pulling the handle or releasing the support stays, hold and operate

them properly. Failure to do so may cause the hands etc. to be caught,

resulting in serious injury or an unexpected accident.

OBe careful when opening or closing the tailgate in windy weather, as it may

forcefully move.

OAfter closing the tailgate, make sure it is securely locked.

NOTICE

Q To prevent damage to the rear step bumper

Do not allow more than one person to get on the rear step bumper at a time.

Q Handling of the tailgate (vehicles with rear bumper)

If the support stays are removed, the tailgate comes into contact with the

rear bumper and may be damaged.

Q Alarms and warning indicators

A combination of exterior and interior alarms as well as warning messages

shown on the multi-information display are used to prevent theft of the vehicle

and accidents resulting from erroneous operation. Take appropriate mea-

sures in response to any warning message on the multi-information display.

The following table describes circumstances and correction procedures when

only alarms are sounded.

Q Conditions affecting operation

The smart entry & start system uses weak radio waves. In the following situa-

tions, the communication between the electronic key and the vehicle may be

affected, preventing the smart entry & start system, wireless remote control

and engine immobilizer system from operating properly.

(Ways of coping: P. 600)

O When the electronic key battery is depleted

O Near a TV tower, electric power plant, gas station, radio station, large dis-

play, airport or other facility that generates strong radio waves or electrical

noise

O When carrying a portable radio, cellular phone, cordless phone or other

wireless communication device

O When the electronic key is in contact with, or is covered by the following

metallic objects

• Cards to which aluminum foil is attached

• Cigarette boxes that have aluminum foil inside

• Metallic wallets or bags

• Coins

• Hand warmers made of metal

• Media such as CDs and DVDs

O When multiple electronic keys are in the vicinity

O When other wireless keys (that emit radio waves) are being used nearby

O When carrying the electronic key together with the following devices that

emit radio waves

• Another vehicle’s electronic key or a wireless key that emits radio waves

• Personal computers or personal digital assistants (PDAs)

• Digital audio players

• Portable game systems

OIf window tint with a metallic content or metallic objects are attached to the

Q Note for the entry function

OEven if the electronic key is within the effective range (detection areas)

when locking or unlocking the doors, the system may not operate properly if

the electronic key is too close to the window or outside door handle, near

the ground, or in a high place.

O Do not leave the electronic key on top of the instrument panel or near the

door pockets when exiting the vehicle. Depending on the radio wave recep-

tion conditions, it may be detected by the antenna outside the cabin and the

doors will become lockable from the outside, possibly trapping the electronic

key inside the vehicle.

O As long as the electronic key is within the effective range, the doors may be

locked or unlocked by anyone. However, only the doors detecting the elec-

tronic key can be used to unlock the vehicle.

OEven if the electronic key is not inside the vehicle, it may be possible to start

the engine if the electronic key is near the window.

OIf the wireless remote control is used to lock the doors when the electronic

key is near the vehicle, there is a possibility that the door may not be

unlocked by the entry function. (Use the wireless remote control to unlock

the doors.)

OPulling the outside door handle while pressing the lock/unlock button on the

outside door handle may prevent the doors from being unlocked. In this

case, return the door handle to the original position, press the lock/unlock

button again, and check that the doors unlock before pulling the door handle

again.

OUnlocking the vehicle may take more time if another electronic key is within

the effective range.

Q When the vehicle is not driven for extended periods

O To prevent theft of the vehicle, do not leave the electronic key within 2 m

(6 ft.) of the vehicle.

O The smart entry & start system can be deactivated in advance. Ask any

authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable

repairer for details.

Q To operate the system properly

Make sure to carry the electronic key when operating the system. Do not get

the electronic key too close to the vehicle when operating the system from the

outside of the vehicle.

Depending on the position and holding condition of the electronic key, the key

may not be detected correctly and the system may not operate properly. (The

alarm may go off accidentally, or the door lock prevention function may not

operate.)

Q Electronic key battery depletion

O The standard battery life is 1 to 2 years.

O If the battery becomes low, an alarm will sound in the cabin when the engine

stops.

O As the electronic key always receives radio waves, the battery will become

depleted even if the electronic key is not used. The following symptoms indi-

cate that the electronic key battery may be depleted. Replace the battery

when necessary. (P. 516)

• The smart entry & start system or the wireless remote control does not

operate.

• The detection area becomes smaller.

• The LED indicator on the key surface does not turn on.

O To avoid serious deterioration, do not leave the electronic key within 1 m (3

ft.) of the following electrical appliances that produce a magnetic field:

• TVs

• Personal computers

• Cellular phones, cordless phones and battery chargers

• Recharging cellular phones or cordless phones

• Table lamps

• Induction cookers

Q If “Key left inside vehicle” is shown on the multi-information display

An attempt was made to lock the doors using the smart entry & start system

while the electronic key was still inside the vehicle, or an attempt was made

to lock either front door by opening a door and putting the inside lock button

into the lock position, then closing the door by pulling on the outside door

handle with the electronic key still inside the vehicle.

Retrieve the electronic key from the vehicle and lock the doors again.

WARNING

Q Caution regarding interference with electronic devices

OPeople with implantable cardiac pacemakers, cardiac resynchronization

therapy-pacemakers or implantable cardioverter defibrillators should main-

tain a reasonable distance between themselves and the smart entry &

start system antennas. (P. 163)

The radio waves may affect the operation of such devices. If necessary,

the entry function can be disabled. Ask any authorized Toyota retailer or

Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer for details, such as the

frequency of radio waves and timing of the emitting radio waves. Then,

consult your doctor to see if you should disable the entry function.

OUsers of any electrical medical device other than implantable cardiac

pacemakers, cardiac resynchronization therapy-pacemakers or implanta-

ble cardioverter defibrillators should consult the manufacturer of the

device for information about its operation under the influence of radio

waves.

Radio waves could have unexpected effects on the operation of such

medical devices.

Ask any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli-

able repairer for details on disabling the entry function.

Q When adjusting the seat position

O Take care when adjusting the seat position to ensure that other passen-

gers are not injured by the moving seat.

ODo not put your hands under the seat or near the moving parts to avoid

injury.

Fingers or hands may become jammed in the seat mechanism.

Q Seat adjustment

O To reduce the risk of sliding under the lap belt during a collision, do not

recline the seat more than necessary.

If the seat is too reclined, the lap belt may slide past the hips and apply

restraint forces directly to the abdomen, or your neck may contact the

shoulder belt, increasing the risk of death or serious injury in the event of

an accident.

Adjustments should not be made while driving as the seat may unexpect-

edly move and cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

OManual seat: After adjusting the seat, make sure that the seat is locked in

position.

Be careful not to hit the removed rear seat cushions against a person or

drop it on yourself.

Q When reinstalling the rear seat cushions or returning the bottom cush-

ions to their original position

O Be careful not to get your hands or feet pinched in the seat.

O Make sure there are no obstacles under the seat which would prevent the

seat from properly locking into place.

O Make sure the rear seat cushions and bottom cushion are securely locked

by pushing it upward and downward.

OCheck that the seat belts are not twisted or caught in the bottom cushions.

The rear view mirror’s position can be adjusted to enable suffi-

cient confirmation of the rear view.
