Tailgate Latch Synchronizer Replacement

NOTE: Put on gloves to protect your hands.

1. Remove the tailgate trim panel (see page 20-140).

2. Disconnect the upper handle rod (A) from the upper

handle (B), lower handle cable (C), right upper lock
rod (D), right lower lock rod (E), right lower sensor
rod (F), left upper lock rod (G) and left upper sensor
rod (H) from the latch synchronizer (I).

3. Remove the bolts, and then remove the latch

synchronizer (A).

4. Install the latch synchronizer in the reverse order of

removal, and note these items:

• The latch synchronizer is equipped with a fail-

safe function for misconnected sensor rods. If
either of the sensor rods are disconnected, it
becomes impossible to unlatch the other side
when pulling on the handle: Make sure the left
sensor lever (A) and right sensor lever (B) on the
removed latch synchronizer has returned upward,
and white pins (C) are close to the end of the
slots in the left open lever (D) and right sensor
lever (E).

• Make sure each cable and rod is connected

securely.

• After installing the latch synchronizer, check the

positions of the timing marks (F) on both sensor
levers, both open levers, lower handle lever (G),
and upper handle lever (H).

• Make sure the tailgate operates properly:

– The tailgate that is closed should open in drop-

down mode by pulling on the upper handle.

– The tailgate that is closed should open in swing

mode by pulling on the lower handle.

– The upper handle doesn’t function with the

tailgate opened in swing mode.

– The lower handle doesn’t function with the

tailgate opened in drop-down mode.

1. Open the tailgate in drop-down mode.

2. Remove the tailgate trim panel (see page 20-140).

3. Disconnect the left upper lock rod (A), and left

upper sensor rod (B) from the latch synchronizer
(C).

4. Detach the rod clips (D).

5. Remove the bolts (A) securing the left tailgate

upper latch (B) using a TORX T50 bit, and remove
the mounting nut (C), then remove the latch with
the left upper lock rod (D) and left upper sensor rod
(E).

6. Disconnect the left upper lock rod (A) and left upper

sensor rod (B) from the left tailgate upper latch (C),
and be careful not to fix them.

7. Install the latch in the reverse order of removal, and

note these items:

• Make sure each rod is connected securely.
• Apply liquid thread lock to the mounting nut

before installation.

• Before securing the left tailgate upper latch (A),

lightly loosen the bolts and nut. While holding
the upper handle out, push the tailgate against
the body to align the latch opening to the left
upper striker (B) on the body. Tighten the bolts
and nut, and recheck.

• Make sure the tailgate locks properly.
• Make sure the tailgate that is closed opens in

drop-down mode by pulling on the upper handle.

• Make sure the lower handle doesn’t function with

the tailgate opened in drop-down mode.

• Make sure the tailgate swings smoothly. If

necessary, do the tailgate position adjustment
(see page 20-151).

NOTE: Put on gloves to protect your hands.

1. Remove the tailgate (see page 20-149).

2. With a maker, make reference lines (A) on two side

of the left tailgate lower hinge (B) for reinstallation.

3. Using a TORX T50 bit, remove the bolts, then

remove the left tailgate lower hinge (A).

4. Install the lower hinge in the reverse order of

removal, and note these items:

• Apply multipurpose grease to the checker

portion.

• Do the tailgate position adjustment (see page

20-151).
