Description and Operation

Vehicles equipped with a tire pressure sensor

Care must be taken when removing and installing tires to make sure that the tire pressure
sensor is not damaged.

CAUTION: To avoid contact with the track rod end, only adhesive weights may be

used on the inside of 17 inch aluminium wheels.

Description

Tire valve and pressure sensor

Tire removal/install tool starting position

Tire and bead high tension area

Tire and bead low tension area

When removing the tire, the bead breaker must not be used within 90 degrees of the tire
valve in each direction.

When using the tire removal machine, the fitting arm start position must be as shown. The
wheel can then be rotated through 180 degrees in a counterclockwise direction. This will
release the high tension from the tire bead allowing the remaining 180 degrees of the tire
to be manually released from the wheel rim.

When installing the tire, position the fitting arm as shown. Rotate the tire in a clockwise
direction taking care that the bead on the side of the tire experiencing low tension does not
damage the sensor.

Description and Operation

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Wheels fitted with the tire low pressure sensor can be visually identified by a grey valve
dust cap. All Ford non-tire pressure monitoring system wheels have a black valve dust cap.

The tire pressure monitoring system monitors pressure in each tire in a road wheel position.
The tire pressure monitoring system monitors the pressure in each tire on the vehicle and
provides the pressure information from all wheels to the driver through the instrument
cluster menu.

General Overview

Description

Radio frequency (RF) receiver

Instrument cluster

Central junction box (CJB)

Tire pressure monitoring system front antenna

Tire low pressure sensor(s)

Tire pressure monitoring system rear antenna

CAUTION: When removing or installing a new tire care must be taken to make sure

that the tire low pressure sensor is not damaged. Make sure the tire bead is broken from
the wheel rim 180 degrees from the tire low pressure sensor.

The purpose of the tire pressure monitoring system is to assist the driver in maintaining the
vehicles tire pressures at the optimum level in order to:

Improve fuel consumption
Maintain ride and handling characteristics
Reduce the risk of tire failure – which may be caused by under-inflated tires
Comply with legislation in relevant markets
Aid the driver during the use of run-flat tires
