HEADLAMP WASHERS -
EXPORT

DESCRIPTION

Headlamp washers on this vehicle work in conjunc-

tion with the windshield washers. The headlamp
washers are enabled with the headlamps “ON” and
the windshield washers activated. With the wind-
shield washers activated, the headlamp washers will
spray the headlamps with three wash cycles. The
wash cycles are predetermined amounts of time that
the washers actually spray, and then pause, and then
spray again.

The Headlamp Washer System is comprised of a

fluid reservoir which is split into two chambers, and
shared with the windshield washers. The upper and
lower chamber are connected by a flexible rubber
hose. A high pressure pump is attached to the reser-
voir, and the fluid lines are routed to the spray noz-
zles. The spray nozzles are mounted in the front

fascia, and extend out from the fascia when pressur-
ized with fluid (Fig. 8).

OPERATION

The headlamp washer system utilizes a separate

high pressure pump that is attached to the wind-
shield washer reservoir. The headlamp washer pump
feeds two nozzles that are mounted behind the front
fascia of the vehicle. The nozzle bodies have a tele-
scopic action that will extend the nozzles in front of
the headlamp assembly. During the telescopic action,
the nozzles are pressurized and will advance into the
proper spray position. These nozzles spray the head-
lamps when the system is activated.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - HEADLAMP
WASHERS - EXPORT

The Headlamp Washer Pump is located above the

Windshield Washer Pump. Check the fluid level in
the reservoir, and adjust fluid level as necessary.

(1) Check the Export Accessory Fuse for continuity.

If fuse is defective, repair the circuit as necessary.

(2) If the headlamp washers do not pop up when a

headlamp wash is requested, disconnect the head-
lamp washer hose. To disconnect the headlamp
washer hose, depress the tabs on the connector at the
pump, and with slight force remove the hose from
the pump. With a regulated 20 psi of air pressure,
apply air pressure to the washer hose. The headlamp
washers should pop up out of the front fascia. If not,

check for leaks, or loose connections in the hose.
When reattaching the washer hose, push the connec-
tor into the washer pump till you hear a snap.

WARNING: IF MORE THAN 20 PSI IS APPLIED TO
THE WASHER HOSE, WASHER FLUID MAY SPRAY
OUT OF THE HEADLAMP WASHER. WEAR SAFETY
GLASSES AND DO NOT HAVE AIMING DIRECTLY
TOWARD FACE.

HEADLAMP WASHER TEST

FLUID.

3. ASSURE WASHER HOSE IS NOT PINCHED,
LOOSE, BROKEN, OR DISCONNECTED. IF
NOT OK, PROPERLY ROUTE OR REPAIR
WASHER HOSE.

4. MOTOR CONNECTOR
LOOSE.

4. PROPERLY SEAT CONNECTOR TO
MOTOR.

5. MOTOR CONNECTOR
TERMINALS BENT.

5. REPAIR TERMINALS AND PROPERLY SEAT
CONNECTOR TO MOTOR.

6. OPEN OR DEFECTIVE
WIPER/WASHER SWITCH.

6. CONNECT AN OHMMETER ACROSS WIP-
ER/WASHER SWITCH TERMINAL #1 AND #2
AND DEPRESS WASHER BUTTON AND
CHECK FOR CONTINUITY. IF NOT OK,
REFER TO WIPER/WASHER SWITCH DIAG-
NOSTIC PROCEDURES.

7. OPEN POWER CIRCUIT
TO MOTOR.

7. OPEN OR DEFECTIVE CIRCUIT BETWEEN
HEADLAMP WASHER RELAY CONNECTOR
AND MOTOR CONNECTOR TERMINAL. IF
NOT OK, REPAIR CIRCUIT.

8. OPEN OR DEFECTIVE
MOTOR GROUND CIRCUIT.

8. OPEN OR DEFECTIVE CIRCUIT BETWEEN
WASHER MOTOR CONNECTOR GROUND
TERMINAL AND GROUND. IF NOT OK,
REPAIR CIRCUIT.

9. OPEN CIRCUIT IN
HEADLAMP WASHER
MOTOR.

9. CHECK FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT ON
MOTOR BETWEEN POWER TERMINAL AND
GROUND TERMINAL. IF NOT OK, REPLACE
WASHER MOTOR.

10. SEIZED MOTOR BEAR-
INGS.

10. APPLY DIRECT BATTERY VOLTAGE TO
MOTOR TERMINALS. IF MOTOR DOES NOT
RUN, REPLACE MOTOR.

11. DEFECTIVE HEADLAMP
WASHER RELAY.

HEADLAMP WASHER HOSES /
TUBES - EXPORT

REMOVAL

NOTE: This procedure covers the removal of the
main, left, and right headlamp washer hoses. Only
perform the steps necessary to remove the appro-
priate hose.

(1) Remove the front bumper reinforcement (Refer

to 13 - FRAME & BUMPERS/BUMPERS/FRONT
BUMPER REINFORCEMENT - REMOVAL).

(2) Release the retaining clamps and remove the

headlamp washer hose (Fig. 9).

INSTALLATION

NOTE: This procedure covers the installation of the
main, left, and right headlamp washer hoses. Only
perform the steps necessary to install the appropri-
ate hose.

(1) Position the headlamp washer hose and install

the retaining clamps.

(2) Install the front bumper reinforcement (Refer

to 13 - FRAME & BUMPERS/BUMPERS/FRONT
BUMPER REINFORCEMENT - INSTALLATION).

(3) Operate the headlamp washers and inspect for

leaks. Repair as necessary.

HEADLAMP WASHER NOZZLE
- EXPORT

REMOVAL

REMOVAL - NOZZLE

NOTE: Right side is shown. Left side is similar.

(1) Disconnect the negative battery cable.
(2) Remove the front bumper reinforcement (Refer

to 13 - FRAME & BUMPERS/BUMPERS/FRONT
BUMPER REINFORCEMENT - REMOVAL).

(3) Release the clamp and disconnect the hose

from the nozzle (Fig. 10).

(4) Remove the 3 bolts and remove the washer

nozzle (Fig. 10).

REMOVAL - NOZZLE COVER

CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the front fascia
when removing the headlamp washer nozzle cover.

(1) Grasp the headlamp washer nozzle cover and

extend the nozzle out of the fascia.

(2) Disconnect the cover from the nozzle.

INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION - NOZZLE

NOTE: Right side is shown. Left side is similar.

(1) Position the washer nozzle and install the

bolts. Torque the bolts to 8 N·m (71 in. lbs.).

(2) Connect the hose and install the retaining

clamp.

(3) Install the front bumper reinforcement (Refer

to 13 - FRAME & BUMPERS/BUMPERS/FRONT
BUMPER REINFORCEMENT - INSTALLATION).

(4) Operate the headlamp washers and inspect for

leaks. Repair as necessary.

INSTALLATION - NOZZLE COVER

CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the front fascia
when installing the headlamp washer nozzle cover.

(1) Grasp the headlamp washer nozzle and extend

the nozzle out of the fascia.

(2) Align the cover to the nozzle and snap it in

place.

(3) Slowly return the headlamp washer nozzle to

its at-rest position, so the nozzle cover is flush with
the front fascia.

HEADLAMP WASHER PUMP
MOTOR - EXPORT

REMOVAL

(1) Remove the right front wheel and tire (Refer to

22 - TIRES/WHEELS - REMOVAL).

(2) Remove the right headlamp access panel.
(3) Disconnect the washer pump electrical connec-

tor.

(4) Disconnect the washer pump hose and remove

the pump from the reservoir.

INSTALLATION

(1) Install the washer pump into the lower reser-

voir.

(2) Connect the washer hose and the electrical con-

nector to the washer pump.

(3) Install the right headlamp access panel.
(4) Install the right wheel and tire assembly (Refer

to 22 - TIRES/WHEELS - INSTALLATION).

(5) Operate the headlamp washer and check for

leaks. Repair as necessary.
