(3) Route the harness along the backside of the

rear fascia and secure with clips (Fig. 8).

(4) Connect the rear fog lamp wiring harness con-

nector behind the battery box, and clip the harness
to the battery with the supplied clips (Fig. 9).

(5) Position the rear fog lamp bracket between the

rear fascia inner surface and the belly pan bracket.

(6) Connect the rear fog lamp electrical connector,

and verify that the fog lamp is positioned correctly.

(7) Install the rear extension belly pan. The rear-

ward 4 bolts are used to secure the rear fog lamp
brackets.

(8) Connect the battery negative cable, and install

the battery cover.

(9) Verify vehicle and system operation.

HEADLAMP

DESCRIPTION

This vehicle is equipped with High Intensity Dis-

charge Headlamps (HID). The HID type lamp is
used in place of the conventional halogen low beam
lamp. High beam lamps remain the same halogen
type.

HID lamps get their name from the intense white

light produced by the electrical discharge. The light
produced by the HID lamps appears as a white color
as opposed to the yellow color of the standard halo-
gen lamps.

HID lighting provides about three times the light

output of standard halogen lamps while using less
energy. The lamps are also designed to last 10 times
longer than standard halogen lamps.

OPERATION

High Intensity Discharge Headlamps (HID) rely on

an AC (alternating current) electrical charge to ignite
xenon gas contained in a sealed beam lamp. The HID
lamps are similar in operation to common vapor
filled street headlamps. Instead of using a filament
to produce light, the gas inside the lamp is ignited by
creating an arc between two electrodes.

The color of the light source is classified as its

color

temperature.

As

the

color

temperature

increases, the color of the light moves from yellow to
blue-white to white. The light produced by the HID
lamps appears as a white color as opposed to the yel-
low color of the standard (halogen) lamps. HID lamps
provide light as a higher color temperature than
standard halogen lamps.

For the color temperature of different lamp types,

refer to the COLOR TEMPERATURE table. As a
point of reference, typical sunlight at noon has a
color temperature of 4977° C (8990° F).

There are three components to each of the HID

headlamps:

• Ballast Module - The 12 volt Direct Current

(DC) power supplied by the low beam relay is con-
verted to Alternating Current (AC) power by the bal-
last module (Fig. 10). Each lamp requires its own
ballast. The ballast converts and steps up the low
beam relay output to 800 volts AC, and supplies the
lamp assembly via a cable connected to the igniter.

• Igniter - The lamp assembly contains an igniter

(Fig. 11) that controls the voltage applied to the lamp
electrodes. The igniter uses the voltage supplied by
the ballast and momentarily steps up the voltage to
25,000 volts to start the lamp. Once ignited, it will
reduce the voltage to 85 volts.

• Lamp - The lamp (Fig. 11) contains electrodes

and xenon gas. The lamp takes about 10-15 seconds
of warm-up time to reach full operation. The light
appears blue during warm-up and then turns to
white.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - HIGH INTENSITY
DISCHARGE HEADLAMPS

The High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps are

supplied B+ voltage and ground, the same as normal
halogen low beam lamps. The low beam system is
different from there forward. The ballast module is
mounted to the inside of the headlamp unit access
cover. The ballast module has internal circuit protec-
tion to prevent module damage in case of an open or
shorted circuit. The module has overcharge and
undercharge circuit protection. If either is sensed,
the module will not illuminate the headlamps for

that key cycle or until the fault is corrected. Recycle
the ignition and headlamp switch if both headlamps
do not illuminate and the fuse is OK. Before deter-
mining the headlamp assembly is faulty, check the
connector at the headlamp and the low beam fuse in
the Power Distribution Center (PDC). Check the
BCM for any faults on the park, high beam & fog
lamp outputs and the low beam relay coil. If the
BCM senses any short conditions, it will disable
these outputs until the next ignition On/Off cycle. If
the ballast module senses a short or open circuit con-
dition, it will not operate the lamp/igniter.

The headlamp unit assembly must be removed to

perform the following tests (Refer to 8 - ELECTRI-
CAL/LAMPS/LIGHTING - EXTERIOR/HEADLAMP
UNIT - REMOVAL).

(1) Inspect lamp/igniter assembly for a burned out

lamp. If lamp is burned out it will appear black or
smoky, similar to a normal halogen bulb. If lamp
looks OK, go to Step 2.

(2) Check for B+ battery voltage at the two pin

connector going into the ballast module. Refer to Wir-
ing Diagrams for connector location. If battery volt-
age and a good ground are present, go to Step 3. If
B+ voltage and a good ground are not present, refer
to Wiring Diagrams for circuit and connector loca-
tions to find short or open circuit.

(3) Plug in a known good ballast module and check

for lamp operation. If lamp lights, replace ballast

module. If lamp still fails to light, replace lamp/ig-
niter assembly.

REMOVAL

HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE (HID) HEADLAMPS -
LOW BEAM

LAMP/IGNITER ASSEMBLY

The lamp/igniter are an assembly and will be ser-

viced and replaced as such.

(1) Open deck lid.
(2) Remove four bolts to battery compartment

cover and remove cover.

(3) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

cable.

(4) Remove front fender extension splash shield on

the respective side by removing the fasteners (Fig.
14). Remove wheel and tire assembly if extra room is
needed.

(5) Remove the three nuts to the headlamp access

panel and remove panel.

(6) Release the spring retainer to the lamp/igniter

assembly.

(7) Pull assembly straight out of headlamp unit.
(8) Disconnect the lamp/igniter assembly connector

from the lamp/igniter assembly.

BALLAST MODULE

(1) Open deck lid.
(2) Remove four bolts to battery compartment

cover and remove cover.

(3) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

cable.

(4) Remove front fender extension splash shield on

the respective side by removing the fasteners (Fig.
14). Remove wheel and tire assembly if extra room is
needed.

(5) Remove the three nuts to the headlamp access

panel and remove panel.

(6) Remove two retaining screws and bracket to

ballast module.

(7) Disconnect the igniter/lamp assembly connector

from ballast module and the ballast module feed con-
nector.

(8) Remove the ballast module from headlamp

access cover.

HIGH BEAM

(1) Open deck lid.
(2) Remove four bolts to battery compartment

cover and remove cover.

(3) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

cable.

(4) Remove front fender extension splash shield on

the respective side by removing the fasteners (Fig.

14). Remove wheel and tire assembly if extra room is
needed.

(5) Remove the three nuts to the headlamp access

panel and remove panel.

(6) Remove the headlamp by turning 1/4 turn

counterclockwise and pulling straight out.

(7) Disconnect the electrical connector from the

headlamp and remove from vehicle.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Do not touch the glass of HID or halogen
lamps with fingers or other possibly oily surface.
Reduced lamp life will result.

HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE (HID) HEADLAMPS -
LOW BEAM

LAMP/IGNITER ASSEMBLY

The lamp and igniter are an assembly and will be

replaced as such.

(1) Connect the lamp/igniter assembly connector to

the lamp/igniter.

(2) Push the lamp/igniter assembly straight into

headlamp unit.

(3) Install the spring retainer across the igniter/

lamp assembly.

(4) Place the headlamp access cover into position

and install the three nuts. Torque nuts to 4 N·m (35
in. lbs.).

(5) Install the front fender extension splash shield

on the respective side by and the fasteners (Fig. 14).
If wheel and tire assembly was removed, install.

(6) Connect the battery negative cable.
(7) Place battery access cover into place and install

four bolts.

(8) Close deck lid.
(9) Verify vehicle and system operation.
(10) Verify headlamp unit aim. If adjustment is

necessary,

(1) Connect the feed and lamp/igniter connectors

to the ballast module.

(2) Install the bracket and two retaining screws to

the ballast module inside the headlamp access cover.

(3) Place the headlamp access cover into position

and install the three nuts. Torque nuts to 4 N·m (35
in. lbs.).

(4) Install the front fender extension splash shield

on the respective side by and the fasteners (Fig. 14).
If wheel and tire assembly was removed, install.

(5) Connect the battery negative cable.

(6) Place battery access cover into place and install

four bolts.

(7) Close deck lid.
(8) Verify vehicle and system operation.

HIGH BEAM

(1) Place headlamp into socket and turn clockwise

1/4 turn.

(2) Connect electrical connector.
(3) Place the headlamp access cover into position

and install the three nuts. Torque nuts to 4 N·m (35
in. lbs.).

(4) Install the front fender extension splash shield

on the respective side by and the fasteners (Fig. 14).
If wheel and tire assembly was removed, install.

(5) Connect the battery negative cable.
(6) Place battery access cover into place and install

four bolts.

(7) Close deck lid.
(8) Verify vehicle and system operation.

HEADLAMP UNIT

STANDARD PROCEDURE

STANDARD PROCEDURE - HEADLAMP UNIT
AIMING

First park the vehicle twenty-five feet perpendicu-

lar to the wall that the screen will be set up on and
parked on a level floor or ground. Then prepare vehi-
cle for headlamp unit/fog lamp unit alignment by
performing the following:

(1) Fill fuel tank or place weight in trunk to sim-

ulate a full load of fuel.

(2) Jounce suspension a minimum of three times

to settle suspension.

(3) Check tire inflation. Fill tires if necessary to

suggested specifications. Refer to vehicle Owner’s
Manual or the vehicle Tire Placard inside the rear
edge of the left door.

(4) Turn the headlamps ON. Make sure that the

vehicle LOW BEAMS are on and not the high beams.
If the fog lamps are being checked, turn ON the fog
lamps w/park lamps only.

(5) Refer to (Fig. 12) for headlamp/fog lamp aiming

screen setup. The headlamps/fog lamps can be
adjusted vertically only.

STANDARD PROCEDURE - HEADLAMP UNIT
AIMING - EXPORT

First park the vehicle 10 meters (33 feet) perpen-

dicular to the wall that the screen will be set up on
and parked on a level floor or ground. Then prepare
vehicle for headlamp unit/fog lamp unit alignment by
performing the following:

(1) Fill fuel tank or place weight in trunk to sim-

ulate a full load of fuel.

(2) Jounce suspension a minimum of three times

to settle suspension.

(3) Check tire inflation. Fill tires if necessary to

suggested specifications. Refer to vehicle Owner’s
Manual or the vehicle Tire Placard inside the rear
edge of the left door.

(4) Turn the headlamps ON. Make sure that the

vehicle LOW BEAMS are on and not the high beams.
If the fog lamps are being checked, turn ON the fog
lamps with park lamps only.

(5) Refer to (Fig. 13) for headlamp/fog lamp aiming

screen setup. The headlamps/fog lamps can be
