BRAKE LAMP SWITCH

DESCRIPTION

The brake lamp switch is located under the instru-

ment panel, at the brake pedal arm. It has three
internal switches controlling various functions of the
vehicle. It’s main function is to control operation of
the vehicle’s brake lamps.

CAUTION: The brake lamp switch can only be
adjusted once. That is during initial installation of
the switch. If the switch is not adjusted properly or
has been removed for some service, a new switch
must be installed and adjusted.

OPERATION

When the brake pedal is pressed, the plunger on

the outside of the brake lamp switch extends out-
ward. This action opens or closes the contacts of the
three switches inside the brake lamp switch.

With the brake pedal pressed down (plunger

extended), the switch for terminals 1 and 2 is closed
completing the circuit. The switch for terminals 3
and 4 is open and so is the switch for terminals 5
and 6.

When the brake pedal is released (plunger pushed

in), the three switches assume the opposite positions.
The switch for terminals 1 and 2 is now open while
the other two switches are now closed, completing
their circuits.

A lever on the back of the switch is used to set the

switch into the “adjusted” position. A non-adjusted
switch will have the lever set to the diagonal position
in relation to the switch housing. The plunger can be
moved in and out, but the states of the internal
switches will not change.

CAUTION: Never move the adjustment lever of the
new brake lamp switch without it being properly
installed in the vehicle first. Such action will render
the switch unusable and the switch must be dis-
carded.

Once installed in the vehicle as described in the

brake lamp switch installation procedure (Refer to 8 -
ELECTRICAL/LAMPS/LIGHTING

-

EXTERIOR/

BRAKE LAMP SWITCH - INSTALLATION), the new
switch’s adjustment lever is rotated to the adjusted
position as indicated. This action locks the plunger to
the internal switches. Once in this position the
switch is permanently adjusted (or locked) and
cannot be readjusted or released even if the
lever is moved back.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - BRAKE LAMP
SWITCH

NOTE: Before proceeding with this diagnostic test,
verify the adjustment lever on the back of the
switch is in the adjusted position. If the lever is in
the non-adjusted (diagonal) position it may have
never been adjusted (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/
LAMPS/LIGHTING

If the electrical circuit has been tested and the

brake lamp switch is suspected of being faulty, it can
be tested using the following method.

(1) Remove the switch from the vehicle. (Refer to 8

- ELECTRICAL/LAMPS/LIGHTING - EXTERIOR/
BRAKE LAMP SWITCH - REMOVAL)

(2) With

the

switch

in

the

released

position

(plunger extended), use an ohmmeter to test each of
the three internal switches as shown (Fig. 1). You
should achieve the results as listed in the figure.

(3) Gently push the plunger on the brake lamp

switch in until it stops.

(4) With the switch in this depressed position

(plunger pushed in), use an ohmmeter to test each of
the three internal switches as shown (Fig. 2). You
should achieve the results as listed in the figure.

If you do not achieve the results as listed in both

figures, the switch is faulty and must be replaced.
Refer to Removal And Installation in this section.

If the switch is found to be operating properly, it

may be misadjusted. Do not reinstall the switch,
replace it. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/LAMPS/
LIGHTING - EXTERIOR/BRAKE LAMP SWITCH -

CAUTION: The switch can only be adjusted once.
That is during initial installation of the switch. If the
switch

is

not

adjusted

properly

or

has

been

removed for any reason, a new switch must be
installed and adjusted.

REMOVAL

(1) Disconnect and isolate battery negative cable

from its post on battery.

(2) Under instrument panel, remove brake lamp

switch by rotating switch in counterclockwise direc-
tion approximately 30 degrees and pulling it out of
bracket (Fig. 3).

(3) Disconnect

harness

connector

from

switch (Fig. 3).

(4) Discard brake lamp switch. It must not be

reused.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Do not reuse the original brake lamp
switch. This switch can only be adjusted once. That
is during initial installation of the switch. If the
switch

is

not

adjusted

properly

or

has

been

removed for some service, a new switch must be
installed and adjusted.

(1) Obtain NEW brake lamp switch. Adjustment

lever on new switch should be at a 45° angle from
wiring connector. If adjustment lever is parallel
with wiring connector, switch has been preset
and must be scrapped. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO
RESET

(OR

READJUST)

(2) Connect wiring harness to connector on switch

(Fig. 3).

(3) Mount and adjust NEW brake lamp switch

using following steps:

(a) Install switch in its bracket by aligning the

index tab on switch with notch in mounting
bracket.

(b) When switch body is fully seated in its

bracket, rotate switch clockwise approximately 30°
to lock switch into place.

(c) With brake pedal in fully released position,

move adjustment lever on brake lamp switch from
45° angled non-adjusted position, clockwise as
shown, until it is parallel with wiring connector
(Fig. 4). Brake lamp switch is now properly
adjusted to vehicle.

(4) Reconnect battery negative cable to post on

battery.

(5) Check stop lamps to verify they are operating

properly and not staying on when brake pedal is in
released position.

(6) Road test vehicle to ensure proper operation of

brakes (including ABS) and lamps.

CENTER HIGH MOUNTED
STOP LAMP UNIT

REMOVAL

(1) Open deck lid.
(2) Remove four bolts to battery compartment

cover and remove cover.

(3) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

cable.

(4) Disconnect the one electrical connector inside

of deck lid.

(5) Remove, four nuts retaining the Center High

Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) to the deck lid.

(6) Push CHMSL into trunk area and remove from

vehicle.

INSTALLATION

(1) Push CHMSL into deck lid.
(2) Install four nuts retaining the Center High

Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) to the deck lid. Torque
nuts to 4 N·m (35 in lbs.).

NOTE: Make sure lamp is centered in deck lid open-
ing.

(3) Connect the one electrical connector inside of

deck lid.

(4) Connect the battery negative cable.
(5) Place battery access cover into place and install

four bolts.

(6) Close deck lid.
(7) Verify vehicle and system operation.

FOG LAMP - FRONT

REMOVAL

(1) Open deck lid.
(2) Remove four bolts to battery compartment

cover and remove cover.

(3) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

cable.

(4) Remove access panel within wheel well (Fig. 5).
(5) Remove the fog lamp by turning 1/4 turn coun-

terclockwise and pulling straight out.

(6) Disconnect the electrical connector from the fog

lamp and remove from vehicle.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Do not touch the glass of halogen lamps
with fingers or other possibly oily surface. Reduced
lamp life will result.

(1) Connect the electrical connector to the fog

lamp.

(2) Install the fog lamp by turning 1/4 turn clock-

wise.

(3) Install the access panel within wheel well (Fig.

5).

(4) Connect the battery negative cable.
(5) Place battery access cover into place and install

four bolts.

(6) Close deck lid.
(7) Verify vehicle and system operation.
(8) Verify fog lamp aim. If adjustment is necessary,

(Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/LAMPS/LIGHTING -
EXTERIOR/HEADLAMP UNIT - STANDARD PRO-
CEDURE). At 25 feet on level surface, the fog lamp
beam should be 11 inches off floor on alignment
screen.

FOG LAMP UNIT - FRONT

REMOVAL

(1) Open deck lid.
(2) Remove four bolts to battery compartment

cover and remove cover.

(3) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

cable.

(4) Remove fog lamp access cover (Fig. 5).
(5) Disengage fog lamp connector.
(6) Remove three screws attaching fog lamp to

front bumper fascia.

(7) Remove fog lamp from fascia.

INSTALLATION

(1) Install fog lamp unit to fascia.

(2) Install three mounting screws attaching fog

lamp unit to front bumper fascia. Torque screws to 4
N·m (35 in. lbs.).

(3) Connect fog lamp connector.
(4) Install fog lamp access panel (Fig. 5).
(5) Connect the battery negative cable.
(6) Place battery access cover into place and install

four bolts.

(7) Close deck lid.
(8) Verify vehicle and system operation.
(9) Verify fog lamp aim. If adjustment is necessary,

(Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/LAMPS/LIGHTING -
EXTERIOR/HEADLAMP UNIT - STANDARD PRO-
CEDURE). At 25 feet on level surface, the fog lamp
beam should be 11 inches off floor on alignment
screen.

FOG LAMP - REAR (EXPORT)

DESCRIPTION

Rear fog lamps are used to make the vehicle more

visible from the rear during foggy or low light condi-
tions. The driver controls the rear fog lamp operation
through a switch located on the multi-function
switch.

FOG LAMP UNIT - REAR
(EXPORT)

REMOVAL

(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

cable.

(2) Remove the bolts from the rear fog lamp

bracket (Fig. 6).

(3) Disconnect the electrical connector and remove

the rear fog lamp through the hole in the rear fascia
(Fig. 7).

INSTALLATION

NOTE: Only perform steps 2-4 if installing a new
wiring harness.

(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

cable.

(2) Remove the rear extension belly pan (Refer to

23 - BODY/EXTERIOR/BELLY PAN - REMOVAL).
