CHECKS

Every 1,000 km or before long jour-

neys, check and top up if required:
❒ engine coolant fluid level;
❒ brake fluid level;
❒ windscreen washer fluid level;
❒ tyre pressure and conditions.
❒ check light system operation (head-

lights, direction indicators, hazard

lights, etc.);

❒ check windscreen wiper/washer op-

eration and windscreen/rear win-

dow blade position/wear;

Every 3,000 km check and top up if

required: engine oil level.

You are recommended to use PETRONAS

LUBRICANTS products, designed

and produced specifically for Lancia

cars (see table “Capacities” in section

“Technical specifications”).

USE OF THE CAR
UNDER HEAVY
CONDITIONS

Should prevailing use of the car be

under one of the following specially

heavy conditions:
❒ trailer or caravan towing;
❒ dusty roads;
❒ short distances (less than 7-8 km)

and repeated with external temper-

atures below zero;

❒ frequently idling engines or long

distance low speed driving (e.g.:

door-to-door deliveries) or in case

of a long term inactivity;

❒ urban routes;
carry out checks more frequently than

required on Service Schedule:
❒ check front disk brake pad condi-

tions and wear;

❒ check cleanness of bonnet and boot

locks and lever cleanness and lu-

brication;

❒ sight inspect the conditions of: en-

gine, gearbox, transmission, pipes

and hoses (exhaust - fuel - brakes),

rubber parts (boots, sleeves,

bushes, etc.);

❒ check battery charge and fluid level

(electrolyte);

❒ visual check on various drive belt

conditions;

❒ check and replace pollen filter, if

required;

❒ check and replace air cleaner, if re-

quired.

ENGINE OIL

Checking engine oil

Check the oil level a few minutes

(about 5) after the engine has

stopped, with the car parked on level

ground.

Remove the dipstick A and clean it,

put it back in completely, remove it

and check that the level is within the

MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick.

The interval between the MIN and

MAX marks corresponds to about one

litre of oil.

Topping up engine oil

If the oil level is near or even below

the MIN mark, add oil through the

filler neck B, until reaching the MAX

mark.

Oil level shall never exceed the MAX

mark.

IMPORTANT If a routine check re-

veals that the oil level is above the

MAX mark, contact Lancia Dealer-

ship to have the correct level restored.

IMPORTANT After adding or chang-

ing the oil, let the engine turn over for

a few seconds and wait a few minutes

after turning it off before you check

the level.

Engine oil consumption

Max engine oil consumption is usually

400 grams every 1000 km.

When the car is new, the engine needs

to run in, therefore the engine oil con-

sumption can only be considered sta-

bilised after the first 5000 - 6000 km.

IMPORTANT The oil consumption

depends on driving style and the con-

ditions under which the car is used.

IMPORTANT Do not add oil with

specifications other than that already

in the engine.

When the engine is hot,
take care when working

inside the engine compartment to
avoid burns. Remember that when
the engine is hot, the fan may cut
in: danger of injury. Scarves, ties
and other loose clothing might be
pulled by moving parts.

WARNING

Used engine oil and filter
contain harmful substances
for the environment. Con-
tact Lancia Dealership to

have the oil and filter changed.

The coolant level shall be checked

with cold engine and shall not be

lower than the MIN mark on the

reservoir.

If the level is low, pour slowly a mixture

of 40% distilled water and 60%

PARAFLU

UP

of the PETRONAS LU-

BRICANTS through the reservoir cap A.

A 40 mixture of PARAFLU

UP

and dis-

tilled water gives freeze protection to

–22°C.

For particularly hard climate condi-

tions, we recommend use of a 60%

PARAFLU

UP

and 40% demineralized

water mixture.

The cooling system uses
PARAFLU

UP

antifreeze. Do

not add fluid having differ-
ent specifications from that

already existing. PARAFLU

UP

can-

not be mixed with other types of flu-
ids. Should other fluids be added, do
not start the engine and contact
Lancia Dealership as soon as pos-
sible.

Do not remove the reser-
voir cap when the engine is

hot to avoid burns.

WARNING

The cooling system is
pressurised. If necessary,

replace the cap only with another
genuine one, otherwise system ef-
ficiency could be compromised.

WINDSCREEN/REAR WINDOW/
HEADLIGHT WASHER FLUID

To top up, open cap A turning it in

the direction shown by the arrow and

then pour a mixture of water and

fluid.

TUTELA PROFESSIONAL SC35, in

the following concentrations:
❒ 30% TUTELA PROFESSIONAL

SC35 and 70% water in summer;

❒ 50% TUTELA PROFESSIONAL

SC35 and 50% water in winter.

In case of temperatures below –20°C,

use undiluted TUTELA PROFES-

SIONAL SC35 fluid.

Check level through the reservoir.

Do not travel with the
windscreen washer reser-

voir empty: the windscreen washer
is fundamental for improving vis-
ibility.

WARNING

Certain commercial addi-
tives for windscreen wash-

ers are inflammable. The engine
compartment contains hot compo-
nents which may set it on fire.

BRAKE FLUID

Unscrew cap A: check that the fluid

level in the reservoir is at maximum.

Fluid level in the reservoir shall not

exceed the MAX mark.

If fluid has to be added, it is suggested

to use the brake fluid in table "Fluids

and lubricants" (see chapter "Tech-

nical characteristics"). 

NOTE Clean accurately the tank cap

A and the surrounding surface.

At plug opening, pay maximum at-

tention in order to prevent any impu-

rities from entering the tank.

For topping up, always use a funnel

with integrated filter with mesh equal

to or lower than 0.12 mm.

IMPORTANT Brake fluid absorbs

moisture, for this reason, if the car is

mainly used in areas with a high de-

gree of atmospheric humidity, the

fluid should be replaced at more fre-

quent intervals than specified in the

“Service schedule”.

Prevent brake fluid, which
is highly corrosive, from
coming into contact with
painted parts. Should it

happen, immediately wash with
water.

Brake fluid is poisonous
and highly corrosive. In

the event of accidental contact,
wash the parts involved immedi-
ately with neutral soap and water,
then rinse thoroughly. Call the
doctor immediately if the fluid is
swallowed.

Air cleaner replacement shall be car-

ried out at a Lancia Dealership.

The symbol 

π on the con-

tainer indicates synthetic

brake fluid, distinguishing it from
the mineral kind. Using mineral
fluids irreversibly damages the
special braking system rubber
seals.

WARNING

The presence of water in the
fuel circuit may cause seri-
ous damage to the entire in-
jection system and cause ir-

regular engine operation. If the
warning light turns on (on certain
versions together with the message
on the display) contact a Lancia
Dealership as soon as possible to
have the bleeding operation carried
out. Should the above indications
take place after refuelling, water has
probably been poured into the tank:
turn the engine off immediately and
contact a Lancia Dealership.

BATTERY

Car battery is “low-maintenance”

type: under normal operating condi-

tions, it requires no topping of elec-

trolyte by distilled water.

CHECK ON CHARGING STATE
AND ELECTROLYTE LEVEL

Check operations are to be performed

in times and modes described in this

Car Maintenance, by authorized per-

sonnel only.

Any topping operation must be per-

formed by specialized personnel only

with the support of Lancia Dealer-

ship.

Liquid contained in the
battery is poisonous and

corrosive. Prevent any contact with
skin or eyes. Keep free flames or
spark sources away from the bat-
tery: danger of explosion or fire.

WARNING

Operation with excessively
low liquid can irreparably

damage the battery and provoke its
explosion.

WARNING

BATTERY REPLACEMENT

If necessary, replace the battery with

an original one with the same charac-

teristics.

If replaced with a battery having dif-

ferent characteristics, maintenance

expiry dates specified in “Scheduled

Service” do not apply any more.

Thus, for battery maintenance, com-

ply with instructions given by battery

Manufacturer.

Substances contained in the
batteries are very danger-
ous for environment. For
battery replacement, con-

tact Lancia Dealership, which is
equipped for disposal respecting en-
vironment and law regulations.

The wrong installation of
electric and electronic ac-
cessories can serious dam-
age the car. To install anti-

theft device, mobile phone, etc. after
purchasing the car, please contact
Lancia Dealership, for suggestions
about the most suitable devices and,
most of all, recommendations on us-
ing a higher capacity battery.

If car remains unused for
long time in cold weather

conditions, remove the battery and
transfer it to a heated place, other-
wise it could be frozen.

WARNING

When operating on or near
the battery, always protect

your eyes with specific goggles.

WARNING

USEFUL RECOMMENDATIONS
TO EXTEND BATTERY
DURATION

In order to prevent the quick dis-

charge of battery and extend its oper-

ation in time, carefully follow these

instructions:
❒ when parking the car, ensure that

doors and hoods are properly

closed, to prevent roof lamps from

remaining switched on in the pas-

sengers’ compartment;

❒ switch off internal roof lamps: any-

way, the car is equipped with an

automatic system for switching in-

ternal lights off;

❒ with engine off, do not keep devices

switched on for long time (for ex.

car radio, emergency lights, etc.);

❒ before any operation on electric

system, disconnect the negative

pole cable from battery;

❒ fully tighten battery terminals.

WARNING Keeping the battery in

charging state lower than 50% for a

long time damages battery due to sul-

phation, reducing starting skill and

capacity.

Besides, it is more subject to freezing

(possibly occurring at –10°C).

In case of long stop, refer to para-

graph “Car inactivity”, in chapter

“Starting and driving”.

To install onboard electric accessories

needing permanent electric supply

(alarm, etc.) or any accessory affect-

ing the electric supply, after purchas-

ing the car, please contact Lancia

Dealership, whose personnel can sug-

gest the most suitable devices belong-

ing to Lancia accessory line and eval-

uate total electric absorption, to en-

sure whether the car electric system

can support the load required or must

be integrated by a larger battery.

Really, some of these devices contin-

uously absorb electric energy also

with engine off, gradually discharging

the battery.

WHEELS AND
TYRES

Check the pressure of each tyre, in-

cluding the spare, every two weeks

and before long journeys. The pres-

sure should be checked with the tyre

rested and cold.

For the correct tyre inflation pressure,

see “Wheels” in “Technical specifica-

tions” section.

Incorrect pressure causes abnormal

tyre wear:

A normal pressure: tread evenly

worn.

B low pressure: tread particularly

worn at the edges.

C high pressure: tread particularly

worn in the centre.

Tyres must be replaced when the

tread wears down to 1,6 mm. In any

case, comply with the laws in the

country where the car is being driven.

IMPORTANT NOTES
❒ As far as possible, avoid sharp

braking and screech starts, etc. Be

careful not to hit the kerb, potholes

or other obstacles hard. Driving for

long stretches over bumpy roads

can damage the tyres;

❒ Periodically check that the tyres

have no cuts in the side wall, ab-

normal swelling or irregular tyre

wear. If any of these occur, have

the car seen to at a Lancia Dealer-

ship;

❒ Avoid overloading the vehicle when

travelling: this may cause serious

damage to the wheels and tyres;

❒ If a tyre is punctured, stop imme-

diately and change it to avoid dam-

age to the tyre, the rim, suspensions

and steering system;

❒ Tyres age even if they are not used

much. Cracks in the tread rubber are

a sign of ageing. In any case, if the

tyres have been on the car for over 6

years, they should be checked by spe-

cialised personnel, to see if they can

still be used. Also remember to check

the spare wheel;

❒ In the case of replacement, always fit

new tyres, avoiding those of dubious

origin;

❒ If a tyre is changed, also change the

inflation valve;

❒ To allow even wear between the front

and rear tyres, it is advisable to

change them over every 10-15 thou-

sand kilometres, keeping them on the

same side of the car so as to not re-

verse the direction of rotation.

RUBBER HOSES

As far as the brake system and fuel

rubber hoses are concerned, carefully

follow the “Service schedule” in this

section.

Indeed ozone, high temperatures and

prolonged lack of fluid in the system

may cause hardening and cracking of

the hoses, with possible leaks. Care-

ful control is therefore necessary.

WINDSCREEN/
REAR WINDOW
WIPERS

BLADES

Periodically clean the rubber part 

using special products; TUTELA

PROFESSIONAL SC35 is recom-

mended.

If the rubber blades are bent or worn

they should be replaced. In any case

they should be changed once a year.

A few simple notions can reduce the

possibility of damage to the blades:
❒ if the temperature fall below zero,

make sure that ice has not frozen the

rubber against glass. If necessary,

thaw using an antifreeze product;

❒ remove any snow from the glass: in

addition to protecting the blades, this

prevents effort on the motor and

overheating;

❒ do not operate the windscreen and

rear window wipers on dry glass.

Driving with worn wiper blades is a se-

rious hazard, because visibility is re-

duced in bad weather.

Remember that road hold-
ing depends also on the

correct tyre inflating pressure.

WARNING

If the pressure is too low
the tyre overheats and this

can cause it serious damage.

WARNING

Do not cross switch the
tyres, moving them from

the right of the car to the left and
vice versa.

WARNING

Never submit alloy rims to
repainting treatments re-

quiring to use temperatures ex-
ceeding 150°C since the mechani-
cal properties of the wheels could
be impaired.

Changing the windscreen wiper
blades fig. 10

Proceed as follows:
❒ raise the windscreen wiper arm A

and position the blade so that it

forms an angle of 90° with the arm;

❒ press tab B of the coupling spring

and remove the blade ;

❒ fit the new blade by inserting the

tab into the special slot in the arm.

Make sure it is properly locked into

place.

Changing the rear window blade

Proceed as follows:
❒ raise the cover A and remove the

arm from the car, slackening the

nut B that fastens it to the pivot

pin;

❒ fit the new arm, positioning it cor-

rectly, and fully tighten the nut;

❒ lower the cover.

SPRAY NOZZLES

Windscreen wiper

If the jet of fluid is inadequate, firstly

check that there is fluid in the reser-

voir: see “Checking fluid levels” in

this section).

Then check that the nozzle holes are

not clogged, if necessary use a needle.

Fluid jets shall be directed at about

1/3 height from the window upper

edge.

Rear window wiper

Rear window washer jets can be ad-

justed in the same way.

The nozzle holder is located on the

left side of the third brake light unit.

PROTECTION FROM
ATMOSPHERIC AGENTS

The main causes of corrosion are the

following:
❒ atmospheric pollution;
❒ salty air and humidity (coastal areas,

or hot humid climates);

❒ seasonal environment conditions.
Not to be underestimated is also the

abrasive action of wind-borne atmos-

pheric dust and sand and mud and

gravel raised by other vehicles.

On your Lancia Ypsilon, Lancia imple-

mented the best manufacturing tech-

nologies to effectively protect the body-

work against corrosion.

These include:
❒ Painting products and systems

which give the car particular resis-

tance to corrosion and abrasion;

❒ Use of galvanised (or pretreated)

steel sheets, with high resistance to

corrosion;

❒ Spraying the underbody, engine

compartment, wheelhouse internal

parts and other parts with highly

protective wax products;

❒ Spraying of plastic parts, with a

protective function, in the more ex-

posed points: underdoor, inner

fender parts, edges, etc.;

❒ Use of “open” boxed sections to

prevent condensation and pockets

of moisture from triggering rust in-

side.

BODY AND UNDERBODY
WARRANTY

Your Lancia Ypsilon is covered by

warranty against perforation due to

rust of any original element of the

structure or body. For the general

terms of this warranty, refer to War-

ranty Booklet.
