Battery produces excessive gas.

Is battery defective?

Renew battery.

Check contact between regulator/alternator 
and between alternator/diode carrier.
Is contact poor?

Repair cable connections.

Check regulator.
Is regulator defective?

yes

Renew regulator.

Acid level too low.

Check level.
Is level below set level?

yes

Top up with distilled water.

no

Check charge status.
Is battery overcharged?

yes

Top up with distilled water.
