Separating centre and rear silencers

Note

The connecting pipe can be cut through at the cutting location

in order to renew the centre and rear silencers separately.

The separating point is marked with indentations on the out‐

side of the exhaust pipe.

Procedure:

WARNING

To avoid injury from metal shavings, wear eye protection and

protective clothing.

– Cut through exhaust pipe at cutting point -arrow 2- using chain-

type pipe cutter - VAS 6254- or pneumatic sabre saw - V.A.G

1523A- .

– Centre clamp -4- on side marks when installing, arrows -1- and

-3-.

– Install clamp so that end of bolt -arrow- does not extend be‐

yond lower edge of clamp.

• Threaded connection faces to rear.
Specified torque:

Clamp with 2 individual clips: 25 Nm
Clamp with continuous clip: 35 Nm

– Align exhaust system free of stress

Aligning exhaust system free of stress

• The exhaust system must be aligned when cold.
– Loosen bolts -3 and 4- on front clamp -1-.
– Align front clamp -1- to marking -A- on front exhaust pipe -2-

(-arrow- points forwards).

• Dimension -a- =

• Do not allow the bolts must be on the right and the ends to

protrude beyond the lower edge of the clamp.

– Tighten front clamp bolts -3- hand-tight.

     Rep. gr.26 - Exhaust system

– Push exhaust system forward until preload on rubber mount‐

ing for rear silencer is dimension -a- 15…17 mm.

– In this position, tighten bolts -3 and 4- of front clamp evenly.

Removing:
– Remove air filter

lay cable to side.

– Remove nuts (accessible from above) -arrows- securing front

exhaust pipe to turbocharger.

– Unscrew nuts (accessible from below) securing front exhaust

pipe to turbocharger.

– Unscrew nuts -arrows- and pull underbody cover down slight‐

ly.

Engine codes BZB, CAWA, CAWB, CCTA, CCTB, CGYA, CCZA,

CCZB, CDAA:
– Separate electrical connection -arrow- on right of underbody.
– Remove electrical connector from bracket and lay electrical

line to Lambda probe to side.

Engine code CBFA:
– Unclip lines -arrows-, pull off retainer -2- and separate con‐

nectors -1 and 3-.

– Unbolt bracket for exhaust system -arrows-.

– Remove cross member for underbody -arrows-.

Caution

Danger of damage to the de-coupling elements.

♦ Do not bend de-coupling elements in front exhaust pipe

by more than 10°.

– Loosen clamp -1- and push to rear.
– Remove catalytic converters with front exhaust pipe.
Installing:
Installation is carried out in the reverse order. When installing,

note the following:
♦ Coat studs of turbocharger with high-temperature paste - G

Check exhaust system for leaks

Proceed as follows:
– Start engine and allow to idle.
– Seal exhaust tailpipe briefly (e.g. hold cloth over end).
– Check for leaks and listen for noise at connecting points (cyl‐

inder head/exhaust manifold, exhaust manifold/front exhaust

pipe, etc.) with the assistance of a 2nd mechanic.

Exhaust system (Tiguan)

Note

Do not bend the flexible joint in the front exhaust pipe by more

than 10° because it might otherwise be damaged.

Renew seals, gaskets and self-locking nuts.

After working on the exhaust system, ensure that the system

is not under stress and that there is sufficient clearance to the

bodywork. If necessary, loosen clamp and align silencers and

exhaust pipe so that sufficient clearance is maintained to the

bodywork at all points and the mountings are evenly loaded.

– Position double clamp centrally at side marks -1- and -3- when

installing.

– Install double clamp so that end of bolt -arrow- does not extend

beyond lower edge of double clamp.

• Threaded connection faces to rear.

Align rear silencer.
– Align rear silencer so that dimensions -a- are identical.
Specified torque:

Clamp with 2 individual clips: 25 Nm
Clamp with continuous clip: 35 Nm

• The exhaust system must be aligned when cold.

– Mark position of propshaft with flexible coupling relative to

output shaft of bevel box.

– Counterhold at rear final drive when loosening or tightening

propshaft.

Note

To loosen »next« bolt, turn propshaft further by turning front

wheels at same time.

– Unbolt propshaft -arrows- and pull off bevel box.

– Guide propshaft upwards into the tunnel and use a suitable

piece of wood to support it on steering rack guard plate.

All:
– Unscrew nuts (accessible from below) securing front exhaust

pipe to turbocharger.

ly.

1.1

General notes on ignition system

♦ The battery must be disconnected only with ignition switched

off. If a coded radio is installed, ascertain code before discon‐

necting battery.

♦ Observe required procedures after connecting battery ⇒  Elec‐

trical system; Rep. gr.  27 ; Disconnecting and reconnecting

battery .

♦ For trouble-free operation of electrical components, a voltage

of at least 11.5 V is necessary.

♦ After completing work, read event memory of engine control

unit. Clear all events that may have been recorded while

checks and repairs were carried out. If the event memory was

cleared, the readiness code must be generated ⇒ Vehicle di‐

agnostic tester “Guided Functions”.

♦ If, after fault finding, repairs or component tests, the engine

starts, runs for a short period and then stops, then the fault

may be that the immobilizer is blocking the engine control unit.

In this case, the control unit must be adapted ⇒ Vehicle diag‐

nostic tester “Guided Functions”.

1.2

Safety precautions

To prevent injuries to persons and/or damage to the injection and

ignition system, the following must be observed:
♦ Do not touch or pull off ignition coils with output stage when

engine is running or turning at starter speed.

♦ Switch off ignition before connecting or disconnecting injection

and ignition system wiring as well as test instrument cables.

♦ If the engine has to be turned over at starting speed without it

starting (e.g. compression test), first unplug the connectors

from the ignition coils and the injectors. Read and delete event

memory after completion of work.

♦ Always switch off ignition before cleaning engine.
♦ Disconnecting and connecting the battery must only be done

with the ignition switched off, otherwise the engine control unit

could be damaged.

Note the following if testers and measuring instruments have to

be used during a road test:
♦ Test instruments and measuring equipment must always be

secured to the rear seat and operated by a second person from

this location.

If test and measuring instruments are operated from front pas‐

senger seat and the vehicle is involved in an accident, there is a

possibility that the person sitting in this seat may receive serious

injuries when the airbag is triggered.

Assembly overview - ignition system

To pull off spark plugs, fit puller - T40039- onto uppermost,

thick rib -arrow- of ignition coils with final output stages.

If the lower ribs are used, they could be damaged.

– Pull all ignition coils about 30 mm out of spark plug recess

using puller - T40039- .

– Release connectors and pull all connectors off ignition coils

-arrows- at the same time.

Installing ignition coils with output stages
– Fit all ignition coils loosely into spark plug holes.

– Align the ignition coils with the connectors -arrows- and attach

all connectors onto ignition coils simultaneously.

– Press ignition coils onto spark plugs by hand with uniform

pressure.

Removing and installing knock sensor 1

Removing
– Pull electrical connector -2- off knock sensor I - G61- .
– Remove coolant pump

Note

The knock sensor I - G61- is located under the intake manifold

behind the coolant pump.

– Remove bolts of knock sensor I - G61- and remove it.
Installing
– Install in reverse order of removal.

Removing and installing engine speed

sender - G28-

Removing
– Remove engine cover.
– Open hose clip -2- of air pipe.
– Disconnect electrical connector -arrow-.
– Remove noise insulation ⇒  General body repairs, exterior;

Rep. gr.  50 ; Noise insulation .

– Unscrew and remove bolts -1 and 4- and pull air hose down‐

wards off throttle valve module - J338- .

     Rep. gr.28 - Ignition system

– Pull air hose -1- off charge air cooler and take air pipe out

downwards.

– Detach electrical connector -1- from engine speed sender -

G28- .

– Undo and remove bolt securing engine speed sender - G28- .
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following.
