CHECKING LEVELS

ENGINE OIL LEVEL

The check is carried out either when the ignition is switched
on using the oil level indicator in the instrument panel, or using
the dipstick.

Take care when working under the bonnet, as certain areas of the
engine may be extremely hot (risk of burns) and the cooling fan
could start at any time (even with the ignition off).

Check all of these levels regularly, in line with the manufacturer's
service schedule. Top them up if necessary, unless otherwise indicated.
If a level drops significantly, have the corresponding system checked by

a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

To ensure that the reading is correct, your vehicle must be parked
on level ground and the engine must have been off for more than
30 minutes.

It is normal to top up the oil level between two services (or oil changes).
PEUGEOT recommends that you check the level, and top up if
necessary, every 3 000 miles (5 000 kms).

Checking using the dipstick

Refer to the "Petrol engine" or "Diesel engine" section for the location of
the dipstick in the engine compartment of your vehicle.
F  Take the dipstick by its coloured grip and remove it completely.
F

Wipe the end of the dipstick using a clean non-fluffy cloth.

F

Refit the dipstick and push fully down, then pull it out again to make

the visual check: the correct level is between the marks A and B.

A = MAx

B = MIN

If you find that the level is above the A mark or below the B mark, do
not start the engine
.

If the level is above the MAX mark (risk of damage to the engine),
contact a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

If the level is below the MIN mark, you must top up the engine oil.

146

RCZ_en_Chap07_verifications_ed01-2015

BRAKE FLUId LEVEL

The brake fluid level should be close to the "MAX" mark. If it is
not, check the brake pad wear.

Changing the fluid

Refer to the manufacturer's service schedule for details of the interval
for this operation.

Fluid specification

The brake fluid must conform to the manufacturer's recommendations.

POWER STEERING FLUId LEVEL

The power steering fluid level should be close to the "MAX"
mark. With the engine cold, unscrew the cap to check the level.

Engine oil grade

Before topping up or changing the engine oil, ensure that you have the
correct grade of oil for your engine and that it meets the manufacturer's
recommendations.

Topping up the engine oil level

Refer to the "Petrol engine" or "Diesel engine" section to identify the
location of the oil filler cap in the engine compartment of your vehicle.
F

Unscrew the oil filler cap to reveal the filler aperture.

F

Add oil in small quantities, avoiding any spills on engine

components (risk of fire).

F  Wait a few minutes before checking the level again using the

dipstick.

F  Add more oil if necessary.
F

After checking the level, carefully refit the oil filler cap and the

dipstick in its tube.

After topping up the oil, the check when switching on the ignition with
the oil level indicator in the instrument panel is not valid during the
30 minutes after topping up.

Engine oil change

Refer to the manufacturer's service schedule for details of the interval
for this operation.

In order to maintain the reliability of the engine and emission control
system, never use additives in the engine oil.

dIESEL FUEL AddITIVE LEVEL (dIESEL WITH
PARTICLE FILTER)

The additive reservoir low level is indicated by fixed illumination
of this warning lamp, accompanied by an audible signal and a
message that the particle filter additive level is too low.

Topping up

The reservoir must be topped up without delay by a PEUGEOT dealer
or a qualified workshop.

USEd PROdUCTS

Avoid prolonged contact of used oil or fluids with the skin.
Most of these fluids are harmful to health or indeed very corrosive.

Do not discard used oil or fluids into sewers or onto the ground.
Take used oil to a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop
(France) or to an authorised waste disposal site.

COOLANT LEVEL

The coolant level should be close to the "MAx" mark but
should never exceed it.

When the engine is warm, the temperature of the coolant is regulated
by the fan.

In addition, as the cooling system is pressurised, wait at least one hour
after switching off the engine before carrying out any work.

To avoid any risk of scalding, unscrew the cap by two turns to allow the
pressure to drop. When the pressure has dropped, remove the cap and
top up the level.

The cooling fan may start after switching off the engine: take care
with articles and clothing that might be caught by the fan blades.

Fluid specification

The coolant must conform to the manufacturer's recommendations.

SCREENWASH ANd HEAdLAMP WASH FLUId

In the case of vehicles fitted with headlamp washers, the low

fluid level is indicated by an audible signal and a message in
the instrument panel screen.

Top up the reservoir when you next stop the vehicle.

Fluid specification

For optimum cleaning and to avoid freezing, this fluid must not be
topped up with or replaced with plain water.

In wintry conditions, the use of an ethyl alcohol or methanol base fluid is
recommended.

CHECKS

BATTERY

PARTICLE FILTER (dIESEL)

On a new vehicle, the first particle filter regeneration operations
may be accompanied by a "burning" smell, which is perfectly
normal.

Following prolonged operation of the vehicle at very low speed or
at idle, you may, in exceptional circumstances, notice the emission
of water vapour at the exhaust on acceleration. This does not
affect the behaviour of the vehicle or the environment.

The battery does not require any maintenance.
However, check that the terminals are clean and correctly
tightened, particularly in summer and winter.

When carrying out work on the battery, refer to the "Battery"

section for details of the precautions to be taken before disconnecting
the battery and following its reconnection.

The start of saturation of the particle filter is indicated by the
temporary illumination of this warning lamp, accompanied by
an audible signal and a message on the risk of blockage of the
particle filter.

As soon as the traffic conditions permit, regenerate the filter by driving
at a speed of at least 40 mph (60 km/h) until the warning lamp goes off.

If the warning lamp stays on, refer to the "Additive level" section.

Unless otherwise indicated, check these components in accordance
with the manufacturer's service schedule and according to your engine.
Otherwise, have them checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified
workshop.

AIR FILTER ANd PASSENGER COMPARTMENT FILTER

Refer to the manufacturer's service schedule for details of
the replacement intervals for these components.

Depending on the environment (e.g. dusty atmosphere) and
the use of the vehicle (e.g. city driving), replace them twice
as often if necessary
.

A clogged passenger compartment filter may have an adverse effect
on the performance of the air conditioning system and generate
undesirable odours.

Replace the oil filter each time the engine oil is changed.
Refer to the manufacturer's service schedule for details of
the replacement interval for this component.

MANUAL GEARBOX

AUTOMATIC GEARBOX

BRAKE PAdS

BRAKE dISC WEAR

The gearbox does not require any maintenance
(no oil change).

Refer to the manufacturer's service schedule for the
checking interval for this component.

The gearbox does not require any maintenance
(no oil change).

Refer to the manufacturer's service schedule for details of
the level checking interval for this component.

Brake wear depends on the style of driving, particularly in
the case of vehicles used in town, over short distances.
It may be necessary to have the condition of the brakes
checked, even between vehicle services.

Unless there is a leak in the circuit, a drop in the brake fluid level
indicates that the brake pads are worn.

For information on checking brake disc wear, contact a
PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Only use products recommended by PEUGEOT or products of
equivalent quality and specification.
In order to optimise the operation of units as important as those
in the braking system, PEUGEOT selects and offers very specific
products.

After washing the vehicle, dampness, or in wintry conditions, ice
can form on the brake discs and pads: braking efficiency may
be reduced. Make light brake applications to dry and defrost the
brakes.

PARKING BRAKE

If excessive travel or a loss of effectiveness of this system
is noticed, the parking brake must be checked, even
between two services.

Checking this system must be done by a PEUGEOT dealer
or a qualified workshop.

must be level, stable and non-slippery ground.
Apply the parking brake, switch off the ignition and engage first
gear (position P for the automatic gearbox) to lock the wheels.
Check that the parking brake indicator lamps are on fixed (not

flashing) in the instrument panel.
It is imperative that you ensure that the occupants get out of the
vehicle and wait where they are safe.

If necessary, place a chock under the wheel diagonally opposite
the wheel to be changed.

Never go underneath a vehicle raised using a jack; use an axle
stand.

Security socket: for adaptation of the
wheelbrace to the special "security" bolts.
Specific to your vehicle, it is stored in the
glove box.

Wheelbrace: for removal of the wheel fixing
bolts.

jack with integrated handle: for lifting the
vehicle.

TOOLS REQUIREd*

Bolt cover removal tool: for removal of the
bolt finishers (covers) on alloy wheels.

* Depending on the country of sale, the vehicle may be equipped with

the tools needed to change a wheel and a spare wheel (see following
pages).

Do not use:

the jack for any purpose other than lifting the vehicle,

a jack other than the one supplied with the vehicle.

If the jack supplied with the vehicle is not present, contact a
PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop to obtain the jack

defined for the vehicle by the manufacturer.

REMOVING A WHEEL

F  Position the foot of the jack on the ground directly below one of

the two front A or rear B jacking points provided on the underbody,
whichever is closest to the wheel to be changed.

F  Remove the cover on each of the bolts using the bolt cover removal

tool.

F  Fit the security socket on the wheelbrace to slacken the security

bolt.

F  Slacken the other bolts using the wheelbrace only.

F  Extend the jack until its head comes into contact with the jacking

point A or B used; the vehicle's contact area A or B must be
correctly engaged with the central part of the head of the jack.

Ensure that the jack is stable. If the ground is slippery or loose,
the jack may slip or drop. - Risk of injury!

Ensure that the jack is positioned only at one of the jacking
