Towing with a tow truck

NOTICE

■

To prevent damage to the vehicle when towing using a wheel-lift type truck

●

Do not tow the vehicle from the rear when the engine switch is off. The steering lock
mechanism is not strong enough to hold the front wheels straight.

●

When raising the vehicle, ensure adequate ground clearance for towing at the oppo-
site end of the raised vehicle. Without adequate clearance, the vehicle could be
damaged while being towed.

Towing a front-wheel drive vehicle with a tow truck

If towing is necessary, we recommend having your vehicle towed by any authorized
Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer or commercial
towing service, using a wheel-lift type truck or flatbed truck.Use a safety chain
system for all towing, and abide by all state/provincial and local laws.

WARNING

Be sure to transport the vehicle with the front wheels
raised or with all four wheels raised off the ground. If
the vehicle is towed with the front wheels contacting
the ground, the drivetrain and related parts may be
damaged.

Towing with a sling-type truck

Do not tow with a sling-type truck to prevent body
damage.

Using a flatbed truck

When using a flat-bed truck to transport the vehicle, use tire strapping belts. Refer
to the owner's manual of the flat-bed truck for the tire strapping method.
In order to suppress vehicle movement during transportation, set the parking brake
and turn the engine switch off.

When towing a vehicle equipped with a Stop & Start system

If it is necessary to tow the vehicle with all 4 wheels on the ground, perform the following
procedure before towing the vehicle, in order to protect the system. Turn the engine
switch off and then start the engine or turn the engine switch to ON.

Emergency towing

Automatic transmission: If a tow truck is not available in an emergency, your vehicle
may be temporarily towed using cables or chains secured to the emergency
towing eyelets. This should only be attempted on hard surfaced roads for short
distances at under 30 km/h (18 mph).
Multidrive: If a tow truck is not available in an emergency, your vehicle may
be temporarily towed using cables or chains secured to the emergency towing
eyelets. This should only be attempted on hard surfaced roads for at most 80 km
(50 miles) at under 30 km/h (18 mph).
A driver must be in the vehicle to steer and operate the brakes. The vehicle's
wheels, drive train, axles, steering and brakes must be in good condition.

Situations when it is not possible to be towed by another vehicle (Auto-
matic transmission)

In the following situations, it is not possible to be towed by another vehicle using
cables or chains, as the front wheels may be locked due to the parking lock.
Contact any authorized Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized repairer or any reliable
repairer, or commercial towing service.

●

There is a malfunction in the shift control system.

●

There is a malfunction in the engine immobilizer system.

●

There is a malfunction in the smart entry & start system.

Emergency towing procedure

To have your vehicle towed by another vehicle, the towing eyelet must be installed
to your vehicle. Install the towing eyelet using the following procedure.

WARNING

For vehicles with an automatic transmission:
Do not perform any of the following as doing so may cause the parking lock mechanism
to engage, locking the front wheels and possibly leading to an accident resulting in death
or serious injury:

●

Unfasten the driver’s seat belt and open the driver’s door.

●

Turn the engine switch off.

Take out the flathead screwdriver and towing eyelet.

Remove the eyelet cover using a flathead
screwdriver.

To protect the bodywork, place a rag between the
screwdriver and the vehicle body as shown in the
illustration.

Insert the towing eyelet into the hole and
tighten partially by hand.

Tighten down the towing eyelet securely us-
ing a wheel bolt wrench or hard metal bar.

Wheel bolt wrench

Vehicles without wheel bolt wrench: Wheel bolt wrench can be purchased at any
authorized Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
Vehicles with wheel bolt wrench: Wheel bolt wrench is installed in luggage compart-
ment.

WARNING

When installing towing eyelets to the vehicle, make sure to securely install them to
the specified positions.
If not securely installed, towing eyelets may come loose during towing.

Securely attach cables or chains to the towing eyelet.

Take care not to damage the vehicle body.

NOTICE

To prevent damage to the vehicle during emergency towing, do not secure cables or
chains to the suspension components.

Enter the vehicle being towed and start the engine.

If the engine does not start, turn the engine switch to ON.

While towing

If the engine is not running, the power assist for the brakes and steering will not
function, making steering and braking more difficult.

WARNING

For vehicles with an automatic transmission: Do not turn the engine switch off. This
may lead to an accident as the front wheels will be locked by the parking lock.

For vehicles with a multidrive: Do not turn the engine switch off. There is a possibility
that the steering wheel is locked and cannot be operated.

Shift the shift position to N and release the parking brake.

Turn auto mode of the parking brake off.

When towing, avoid sudden starts, etc., which place excessive stress on the towing
eyelets, cables or chains. The towing eyelets, cables or chains may become dam-
aged, broken debris may hit people, and cause serious damage.

Getting unstuck from mud, sand, or snow

Stop the engine. Set the parking brake and shift the shift position to P.

Remove the mud, snow or sand from around the front wheels.

Place wood, stones or some other material under the front wheels to help
provide traction.

Restart the engine.

Shift the shift position to D or R and release the parking brake. Then, while
exercising caution, depress the accelerator pedal.

WARNING

●

When shifting the shift lever, do not shift it with the accelerator pedal depressed.
Doing so may lead to unexpected rapid acceleration of the vehicle that may cause
an accident.

●

If you choose to push the vehicle back and forth to free it, make sure the
surrounding area is clear to avoid striking other vehicles, objects or people.
The vehicle may also lunge forward or lunge back suddenly as it becomes free.
Use extreme caution.

NOTICE

Avoid spinning the front wheels and depressing the accelerator pedal more than
necessary.
Doing so may damage the transmission and other components.

If it is difficult to free the vehicle, press the

switch and turn the TRC off.

If the vehicle remains stuck even after these procedures are performed, the vehicle
may require towing to be freed.

If a vehicle abnormality is found

The following symptoms are abnormal.

●

Fluid leaks under the vehicle

Water dripping from the air conditioning after use is normal.

●

Flat-looking tires or uneven tire wear

●

Engine coolant temperature gauge continually points higher than normal.

Contact any authorized Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized repairer, or any
reliable repairer as soon as possible. Your vehicle probably needs adjustment or
repair.

Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when braking

Loss of brake effectiveness, spongy feeling, pedal almost touches the floor

Items to check before contacting a dealership

The steering wheel cannot be turned after the engine is stopped

It is locked automatically to prevent theft of the vehicle.

●

When the steering lock cannot be released,
"Push ENGINE Switch while Turning The
Steering Wheel in Either Direction" will be
displayed on the multi-information display.
Check that the shift position is in P. Press
the engine switch while turning the steering
wheel left and right.

●

To prevent the steering lock motor from overheating, operation of the motor
may be suspended if the engine is turned on and off repeatedly in a short
period of time. In this case, refrain from running the engine. After about 10
seconds, the steering lock motor will resume functioning.
