5.  Clean  all  components and  ensure  that  the 

two 

oil-ways  in  the  input  shaft  are  clear  by  blowing 
through  with  an  air  line.

Check,  with  a  feeler  gauge,  the  clearance 
between  the  bearing  and  washer.

10.  Fit  t h e   new  selective 

with  the 

circlip  and 

that  the  above  clearance  is 

maintained. 

11.  Lubricate  the  mainshaft  pilot  bearing  and  fit 

to 

the  mainshaft. 

12.  Fit  t h e   fourth  gear  baulk  ring  t o   the  input 

shaft. 

13. 

Fit  t h e   snap ring  t o  the  bearing. 

4. 

invert  the  mainshaft  assembly,  in  t h e  vice,  and 
remove  the  mainshaft  rear  bearing  circlip. 

Mainshaft 

Secure  the  mainshaft  assembly  in 

vice  and 

remove  the  circlip  retaining  the 
synchromech  hub  and  gear  assembly. 

2. 

Remove  t h e   selective  washer, 
synchromesh  assembly  and  baulk  ring. 

3.  Remove  t h e   third  gear,  spacer,  and  needle 

roller  bearing.

Using  press  MS 

47,  and  a  support  under  t h e  

first  gear,  press  t h e   mainshaft  assembly  from 

7.  In  addition  remove  t h e  remaining  items:- 

the  rear  bearing.

Separate  the  following  components  from  t h e  
assembly:- 

A. 

First  gear. 
First  gear  bush. 

C. 

Spacer.

roller. 

E.  Selective washer. 
F.  Rear  bearing  snap ring. 

A. 

First  gear baulk  ring. 
First  and  second  synchromesh. 

C. 

Second  gear baulk  ring. 
Second  gear spacer. 

E. 

Second  gear needle roller  bearing. 

F. 

Second  gear. 

8. 

Clean  the  mainshaft  and  all  components  and 
examine 

for 

obvious  wear.

TRANSMISSION 

1. 

Before  dismantling,  mark  the  relationship 

of 

the synchromesh  h u b  t o  the sleeve. 

2. 

Fit 

t h e   baulk  rings  t o   the  synchro-  mesh 

assemblies  t o   facilitate  dismantling  and  t o  
prevent  damage 

to 

the springs. 

3 .  

Place  the  synchromesh  assembly  in  a  clear 
plastic  bag, 

to 

prevent  the  components  being 

lost  and  whilst 

in 

the 

bag,  press  the  sleeve 

from  the hub.

Retrieve  the  synchromesh  balls,  springs  and 
slipper pads  and  remove  t h e  baulk  ring. 
Clean 

all 

the 

synchromesh 

assembly 

components. 

Before  reassembling  the  synchromesh  units 
carry  o u t  the  checks 

for 

third  and  second  gear 

end  floats  as  described  under  t h e   heading 

"Mainshaft  and  gear train  clearance  checks". 

Fit  t h e   synchromesh  hub 

to 

t h e   sleeve 

ensuring that  the alignment marks  line-up. 
Place  the hub and  sleeve o n  a 

level 

block. 

With  the  hub  resting 

on 

the  block  adjust  t h e  

height 

of  the  hub  sufficiently  t o  fit  t h e  springs. 

Locate  the 

slipper 

t h e   springs  and 

press  the  balls  d o w n   t o   b e   retained  by  the 
synchromesh  sleeve. 
Fit  t h e  baulk  ring 

to 

the  hub  and  sleeve.

Carefully  invert  the  synchromesh  assembly  and 
fit  the second  baulk  ring. 
Press  the  synchromesh  sleeve  over  the  hub  t o  
locate the  balls  in  position. 
Remove  the  baulk  rings. 

Thirdtfourth synchromesh  assembly. 

2. 

Repeat  the  instructions  as 

for  t h e  

synchromesh  assembly  but  omit  the  gear 
end-float  checks. 

when  reassembling  t h e   synchromesh  unit, 

ensure  that  t h e   large  chamfer  on  the  sleeve 
faces  the small  boss  on t h e  hub. 

Fifth  gear  sychromesh  assembly. 

Repeat 

the 

instructions 

relating 

t o   the 

synchromesh  assembly. 

Note  that  when  reassembling  t h e   fifth  gear 

chamfer  on  t h e  hub,  faces 

to 

the  rear.
