HYUNDAI. To become familiar with your new HYUNDAI, so that you can fully enjoy it,

read this Owner’s Manual carefully before driving your new vehicle.
This manual contains important safety information and instructions intended to

familiarize you with your vehicle’s controls and safety features so you can safely

operate your vehicle.
This manual also contains information on maintenance designed to enhance safe

operation of the vehicle. It is recommended that all service and maintenance on your

car be performed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer. An authorized HYUNDAI dealers

Owner’s Manual can assist you in many ways. To gain an overview of the contents

of your Owner’s Manual, use the Table of Contents in the front of the manual. The

Chapter.
To quickly locate information about your vehicle, use the Index in the back of the

manual. It is an alphabetical list of what is in this manual and the page number where it

Unleaded

Your new vehicle is designed to perform optimally with unleaded fuel having an octane

number((R+M)/2) of 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher. (Do not use methanol

blended fuels)

Your new vehicle is designed to obtain maximum performance with UNLEADED FUEL,

as well as minimize exhaust emissions and spark plug fouling.

NOTICE

To prevent damage to the engine and engine components, never add any fuel

system cleaning agents to the fuel tank other than what has been specified.
Consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for additional information.

WARNING

Do not “top off” after the nozzle automatically shuts off when refueling.

Always check that the fuel cap is installed securely to prevent fuel spillage in the

event of an accident.

Gasoline containing alcohol and methanol

Gasohol, a mixture of gasoline and ethanol (also known as grain alcohol) are being

marketed along with or instead of leaded or unleaded gasoline. For example, “E15” is a

gasohol comprised of 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline.
Do not use gasohol containing more than 10% ethanol, and do not use gasoline or

gasohol containing any methanol. Either of these fuels may cause drivability problems

and damage to the fuel system, engine control system and emission control system.
Discontinue using gasohol of any kind if drivability problems occur.
“E85” fuel is an alternative fuel comprised of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent

gasoline, and is manufactured exclusively for use in Flexible Fuel Vehicles. “E85” is

not compatible with your vehicle. Use of “E85” may result in poor engine performance

and damage to your vehicle’s engine and fuel system. HYUNDAI recommends that

customers do not use fuel with an ethanol content exceeding 15 percent.

NOTICE

To prevent damage to your vehicle’s engine and fuel system:

Never use gasohol which contains methanol.

Never use gasohol containing more than 15% ethanol.

Never use leaded fuel or leaded gasohol.

Never use “E85” fuel.

Your New Vehicle Limited Warranty does not cover damage to the fuel system or any

performance problems caused by the use of “E85” fuel.

Using Fuel Additives (except Detergent Fuel Additives)

Using fuel additives such as:

- Silicone fuel additive

- Ferrocene (iron-based) fuel additive

- Other metallic-based fuel additives

may result in cylinder misfire, poor acceleration, engine stalling, damage to the

catalyst, or abnormal corrosion, and may cause damage to the engine resulting in a

reduction in the overall life of the powertrain.

- The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate.

NOTICE

Damage to the fuel system or performance problem caused by the use of these fuels

may not be covered by your New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Gasoline containing MMT

Some gasoline contains harmful manganese-based fuel additives such as MMT
(Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl). HYUNDAI does not recommend the

use of gasoline containing MMT. This type of fuel can reduce vehicle performance and

affect your emission control system.
The malfunction indicator lamp on the cluster may come on.

Detergent Fuel Additives

HYUNDAI recommends that you use good quality gasolines treated with detergent

additives such as TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline, which help prevent deposit formation

in the engine. These gasolines will help the engine run cleaner and enhance

performance of the Emission Control System. For more information on TOP TIER

Detergent Gasoline, please go to the website (www. toptiergas.com).
For customers who do not use TOP Tier Detergent Gasoline regularly, and have

problems starting or the engine does not run smoothly, detergent-based fuel additives

that you can purchase separately may be added to the gasoline. If TOP TIER Detergent

Gasoline is not available, one bottle of additive added to the fuel tank according to the

maintenance schedule is recommended (refer to the Maintenance Schedule in chapter

9).
Additives are available from your authorized HYUNDAI dealer along with information

on how to use them. Do not mix other additives.

Operation in foreign countries

If you are going to drive your vehicle in another country, be sure to:

Observe all regulations regarding registration and insurance.

Determine that acceptable fuel is available.

VEHICLE MODIFICATIONS

This vehicle should not be modified. Modification of your vehicle could affect its

performance, safety or durability and may even violate governmental safety and

emissions regulations.
In addition, damage or performance problems resulting from any modification may

not be covered under warranty.

If you use unauthorized electronic devices, it may cause the vehicle to operate

abnormally, wire damage, battery discharge and fire. For your safety, do not use

unauthorized electronic devices.

NOTICE

Some warning sounds (including welcome/good-bye sound, etc.) are generated

from the interior speakers or amplifiers. If necessary, purchase HYUNDAI Part to

replace an interior speaker or amplifier. Any unauthorized product may cause a

malfunction of the interior speakers or amplifiers.

By following a few simple precautions for the first 600 miles (1,000 km) you may add to

the performance, economy and life of your vehicle.

Do not race the engine.

While driving, avoid sudden acceleration.

Do not maintain a single speed for long periods of time, either fast or slow. Varying

engine speed is needed to properly break-in the engine.

Avoid hard stops, except in emergencies, to allow the brakes to seat properly.

Fuel economy and engine performance may vary depending on vehicle break-in

process and be stabilized after 4,000 miles (6,000 km). New engines may consume

more oil during the vehicle break-in period.

Do not tow a trailer during the first 1,200 miles (2,000km) of operation.

Items contained in motor vehicles or emitted from them are known to the State of

California to cause cancer and birth defects or reproductive harm. These include:

Gasoline and its vapors

Engine exhaust

Used engine oil

Interior passenger compartment components and materials

In addition, battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead, lead

compounds and other chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer

and reproductive harm.

VEHICLE DATA COLLECTION AND EVENT DATA RECORDERS

This vehicle is equipped with an event data recorder (EDR). The main purpose of

an EDR is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like situations, such as an air bag

deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist in understanding how a

vehicle’s systems performed. The EDR is designed to record data related to vehicle

dynamics and safety systems for a short period of time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such data as:

How various systems in your vehicle were operating;

Whether or not the driver and passenger safety belts were buckled/fastened;

How far (if at all) the driver was depressing the accelerator and/or brake pedal; and,

How fast the vehicle was traveling.

These data can help provide a better understanding of the circumstances in which

crashes and injuries occur. NOTE: EDR data are recorded by your vehicle only if a non-

trivial crash situation occurs; no data are recorded by the EDR under normal driving

conditions and no personal data (for example, name, gender, age, and crash location)

are recorded. However, other parties, such as law enforcement, could combine the

EDR data with the type of personally identifying data routinely acquired during a crash

investigation.
To read data recorded by an EDR, special equipment is required, and access to the

vehicle or the EDR is needed. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer, other parties,

such as law enforcement, that have the special equipment, can read the information if

they have access to the vehicle or the EDR.

The HYUNDAI Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) uses both the gasoline engine and the

electric motor for power. The electric motor is run by a high-voltage HEV battery.
Depending on the driving conditions, the HEV computer selectively operates between

the engine and the electric motor or even both at the same time.
Fuel efficiency increases when the engine is at idle, or when the vehicle is driven by the

electric motor with the HEV battery.
The HEV battery charge must be maintained, so at times the engine will come on even

at idle to act as a generator. Charging also occurs when decelerating or by regenerative

braking.

The HYUNDAI Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) shares the characteristics of both

a conventional hybrid electric vehicle and an all-electric vehicle.
When used as a conventional hybrid electric vehicle, the HEV computer selectively

operates between the engine and the electric motor or even both at the same time.
When it is operating in the electric vehicle mode, the vehicle is driven only using

the electric motor over a certain distance until the hybrid battery becomes low. The

driving distance in EV mode depends on customer driving style and road conditions.

Aggressive driving maneuvers or in need of diagnosis for emission related parts, may

enable the engine to operate. However, engine power can be limited during emission

reduction control period in cold engine condition.
The hybrid battery can be fully charged by connecting a plug to an external electric

power source.

plugging into a AC charger installed in

your home or a public charging station.

The plug-in hybrid vehicle can be

charged by using household electricity.

The connector locks when the charging

connector is plugged into the charging

inlet. The connector is locked until all

doors are unlocked by the driver. This

mode can be used to prevent charging

cable theft.

seriously impact medical electric

devices such as an implantable

cardiac pacemaker.
When using medical electric devices

such as an implantable cardiac

pacemaker, make sure to ask the

medical team and manufacturer

whether charging your electric

vehicle will impact the operation of

the medical electric devices such as

an implantable cardiac pacemaker.

Check to make sure there is no

water or dust on the charging

cable connector and plug before

connecting to the charger and

charging inlet. Connecting while

there is water or dust on the charging

cable connector and plug may cause

a fire or electric shock.

Be careful not to touch the charging

connector, charging plug, and the

charging inlet when connecting

the cable to the charger and the

charging inlet on the vehicle.

Comply with the following in order

to prevent electrical shock when

charging:

Use a waterproof charger.

Be careful when touching the

charging connector and charging

plug with your hands wet, or when

standing in water or snow while

connecting the charging cable.

Be careful when there is lightning.

Be careful when the charging

connector and plug is wet.

Immediately stop charging when

you find abnormal symptoms (odor,

smoke).

How to Connect AC Charger

parking brake.

2. Turn OFF all switches, shift to P (Park),

and turn OFF the vehicle.

3. Press center edge of the charging

door to open the charging door.

Information

If the charging door does not open because
ice has formed around it, tap lightly or
push on the door to break the ice and
release the door. Do not pry on the door. If
necessary, spray around the door with an
approved deicer fluid (do not use radiator
antifreeze) or move the vehicle to a warm
place and allow the ice to melt.

4. Check if there is dust on the charging

connector and charging inlet.

5. Hold the charging connector handle

and connect it to the vehicle AC

charging inlet. Push the connector

until you hear a “clicking” sound. If

the charging connector and charging

terminal are not connected properly,

this may cause a fire.

Charging connector AUTO/LOCK mode

inlet at a different period according to
which mode is selected.

LOCK mode : The connector locks
when the charging connector is plugged
into the charging inlet.

AUTO mode : The connector locks
when charging starts.

When the charging connector and

charging plug are not connected

properly, reconnect the charging

cable to charge.

Information

Even though charging is possible with
the ignition switch in the ON/START
position, for your safety, start charging
when the ignition switch is in the
LOCK/OFF position and the vehicle
shifted to P (Park). After charging
has started, you can use electrical
components such as the radio by
placing the ignition switch in the ACC
or ON position.

During AC charging, the radio
reception may be bad.

Moving the shift button from P (Park)
to R (Reverse)/N(Neutral)/D (Drive)
stops the charging process.

To restart the charging process, move
the shift button to P (Park), place the
ignition switch to the LOCK/OFF
position, and disconnect the charging
cable. Then, connect the charging cable.

the time required for charging the battery
may vary.

Information

To control the temperature of the high
voltage battery while charging or when
the battery temperature is high, the air
conditioner is used to cool down the
battery. It may generate noise or vibration
from operation of the air conditioner
compressor and cooling fan, but it is a
normal condition when charging the high
voltage battery. Also, the air conditioner’s
performance may be degraded due to
operation of the cooling system to charge
the high voltage battery. This is a normal
condition.

Information

To prevent charging cable theft,
the charging connector cannot be
disconnected from the inlet when the
doors are locked. Unlock all doors to
disconnect the charging connector from
the inlet.

However, if the vehicle is in the charging
connector AUTO mode, the charging
connector automatically unlocks from the
inlet when charging is completed.

How to set the charging rate of the

portable charger

Charging a plug-in hybrid vehicle at

home can stress the household electrical

system more than a typical household

appliance. Most modern residential

electrical circuits are rated at 15 or 20

amps. The portable charger is rated

to supply a 12A continuous load. To

avoid tripping a fuse or breaker in

the household, the portable charger

charging rate can be reduced. Follow the

steps below to set the charging rate of

the portable charger.

1. Check the current output of the

electrical outlet prior to connecting

the portable charger in order to

determine the permissible charging

rate.

2. Connect the plug to a household

electric outlet.

3. Check the LED display on the portable

charger controller. The indicator 8A,

10A or 12A will be displayed.

4. The charging rate (amps) can be

adjusted on the portable charger

controller. Press the button (1) on the

back of the controller.

5. The charging rate (12A, 10A, 8A) on the

LED display changes each time you

press the button. Refer to the table to

adjust the charging rate based on the

electrical outlet current output.

6. When the charging rate is set, follow

the procedure in the next section to

connect your vehicle.
