event of minor frontal impacts (for

which the restraining action of the seat

belts is sufficient).
Seat belts must always be worn. In the

event of a frontal collision, they ensure

the correct positioning of the occupant.

checks its correct operation. After a

check lasting a few seconds, the LED

will indicate the status of the passenger

Do not apply stickers or other objects

on the steering wheel, on the dashboard

in the passenger side airbag area, on side

upholstery on the roof or on the seats.

Never put objects (e.g. mobile phones) on

the passenger side of the dashboard since

they could interfere with correct inflation

of the passenger airbag and also cause

serious injury to the passengers.

The airbag must be able to inflate

without obstruction in the event of

deployment. It is therefore recommended

not to drive with the body bent forward,

but to sit up resting your back and

shoulders on the backrest of the seat.

Adjusting the position of the seat so that

you can reach and manoeuvre the steering

wheel comfortably with your arms slightly

bent being as far away as possible from

the steering wheel. Being too close to

the steering wheel when the airbag is

deployed may cause serious injury.

SERIOUS DANGER: When there is an

active passenger airbag, DO NOT install

rearward facing child restraint systems on

the front seat. Deployment of the airbag

in a crash could cause fatal injuries to

the child regardless of the severity of the

collision. Therefore, always deactivate the

passenger side airbag when a rearward

facing child restraint system is installed

on the front passenger seat. The front

passenger seat must also be positioned

back as far as possible in order to prevent

the child restraint system from coming into

contact with the dashboard. Immediately

reactivate the passenger airbag as soon

as the child restraint system has been

removed.

in the event of a side impact, the car

is equipped with front side bags (for

versions/markets, where provided)

and window bag (for versions/markets,

where provided).

These comprise two types of bags

located in the front seat backrests

fig. 126 which protect the pelvis, chest

and shoulder area of the occupants in

the event of a side collision of medium-

high severity.

This consists of a "curtain" bag housed

behind the roof side linings and

covered by special trims fig. 127.

It is designed to protect the head of

front and rear occupants in the event

of a side collision, thanks to the wide

cushion inflation surface.

The deployment of side bags in the

event of side impacts of low severity is

not required.

In the event of a side collision, the

system provides best protection if the

passenger sits on the seat in a correct

position, thus allowing correct window

bag deployment.

Important notes

Do not wash the seats with water or

pressurised steam (wash by hand or at

automatic seat washing stations).

The front airbags and/or side bags

may be deployed in the event of sharp

impacts to the underbody of the car

(e.g. impact with steps, pavements,

potholes or road bumps etc.).

When the airbag deploys it emits

a small amount of dust: the dust

is harmless and does not indicate

the beginning of a fire. The dust may

irritate the skin and eyes however: in

this case, wash with neutral soap and

water.

Airbag checking, repair and

replacement must be carried out at a

Fiat Dealership.

If the car is scrapped, have the

airbag system deactivated at a Fiat

Dealership.

Pretensioners and airbags are

deployed in different ways on the

basis of the type of collision. Failure

to activate one or more of the

devices does not indicate a system

malfunction.

If when turning the key to MAR the

warning light

does not turn on or

stays on whilst driving, a failure may have

occurred in the restraint systems. In this

case the airbags or pretensioners may not

be deployed in an impact or, in a lower

number of cases, they may be deployed

accidentally. Contact a Fiat Dealership

immediately to have the system checked.

On some versions, in the event of

warning light failure, the

warning light

switches on and the explosive charges of

the passenger airbag are deactivated.

On cars with side bags, do not cover

the front seat backrests with extra covers.

Do not travel with objects in your lap,

in front of your chest or held in your mouth

(e.g., pipe, pencil etc.). They could cause

severe injury if the airbag is deployed in a

crash.

If the car has been stolen or in the

case of attempt to steal it, if it has been

subjected to vandalism or floods, have

the airbag system checked by a Fiat

Dealership.

If the starter switch is at MAR, even if

the engine is switched off, airbags may be

deployed when the car is stationary and

hit by another car. Therefore, even if the

vehicle is stationary, when an active front

passenger airbag is fitted, DO NOT install

rearward facing child restraint systems

on the front passenger seat. Deployment

of the airbag following an impact could

cause fatal injuries to the child. Therefore,

always deactivate the passenger side

airbag when a rearward facing child

restraint system is installed on the front

passenger seat. The front passenger seat

must also be positioned back as far as

possible in order to prevent the child

restraint system from coming into contact

with the dashboard. Immediately reactivate

the passenger airbag as soon as the child

restraint system has been removed. Also

remember that, if the ignition device is

set to STOP, none of the safety devices

(airbags or pretensioners) will be deployed

in the event of collision. Non-deployment

in such cases does not indicate a system

malfunction.

The

LED indicates the passenger

side airbag protection status. If the LED is

off, passenger side protection is active: to

deactivate it, use the Setup Menu (in this

case the LED lights up). When the engine

is started (ignition key turned to MAR

position), the LED turns on for about 8

seconds, provided that at least 5 seconds

have elapsed from when it was switched

off. If not, contact a Fiat Dealership. If the

engine is switched off/on again in less than

5 seconds the LED may remain off. In this

case, to check correct LED operation,

switch the engine off, wait for at least 5

seconds and switch the engine on again.

The LED may light up with various intensity

levels depending on the vehicle conditions.

The intensity may also vary during the

same key cycle.

The front airbag deployment threshold

is higher than that of the pretensioners.

For collisions in the range between the

two thresholds, it is normal for only the

pretensioners to be activated.

The airbag does not replace seat

belts but increases their efficiency.

Because front airbags are not deployed

for low-speed crashes, side collisions,

rear-end shunts or rollovers, occupants

are protected, in addition to any side

bags, only by their seat belts, which must

therefore always be fastened.

STARTING THE

Before starting the engine, adjust the

seat, the interior rear-view mirrors, the

door mirrors and fasten the seat belt

correctly.

Never press the accelerator pedal for

starting the engine.

VERSIONS WITH MANUAL

TRANSMISSION

Petrol versions

Proceed as follows:

engage the parking brake and place

the gear lever in neutral;

fully depress the clutch pedal without

touching the accelerator;

turn the ignition key to AVV and

release it as soon as the engine starts.

Diesel versions

Proceed as follows:

engage the parking brake, put the

gear lever into neutral and turn the
ignition key to MAR: the

warning

light in the instrument panel will turn on;

wait for the

warning light to turn

off and then fully depress the clutch

pedal without pressing the accelerator;

turn the ignition key to AVV as soon

as warning light

switches off.

Release the ignition key as soon as the

engine starts.

WARNING If the engine does not start

at the first attempt, return the ignition

key to STOP before repeating the

procedure. If, with the ignition key on
MAR, the

symbol on the display

stays on together with the

warning

light on the instrument panel (for petrol

versions only), it is advisable to turn the

key to STOP and then back to MAR. If
the

symbol continues to stay on, try

with the other keys provided with the

car. Contact a Fiat Dealership if you still

cannot start the engine.

DUALOGIC

TRANSMISSION

Engine starting is allowed both

with a gear engaged and with the

transmission in neutral (N).
However, the brake pedal must

always be pressed first if neutral is not

engaged. It is advisable to place the

gear lever in neutral (N) before starting

the engine.

SWITCHING OFF THE

ENGINE

Turn the ignition key to STOP while the

engine is idling.

WARNING After a demanding

drive, before turning the engine

off you should allow it to idle to

allow the temperature in the engine

compartment to decrease.

It is dangerous to run the engine in

enclosed areas. The engine consumes

oxygen and engine exhaust contains

carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and

other toxic gasses.

Remember that the brake servo and

electric power steering are not operational

until the engine has been started, therefore

much effort than usual is required on the

brake pedal and steering wheel.

If the engine fails to start with a gear

engaged, the potentially dangerous

situation due to the fact that the

transmission is automatically placed in

neutral will be signalled by an acoustic

warning.

Warning light

flashing for 60

seconds after starting or during prolonged

cranking of the engine indicates a fault with

the glow plug heating system. You can use

the vehicle as usual if the engine starts but

you should contact a Fiat Dealership as

soon as possible.

It is advisable not to demand

maximum performance from your car (e.g.

excessive acceleration, long distances

at maximum rpm, excessively intense

braking, etc.) when it is first used.

When the engine is switched off never

leave the key turned to MAR-ON to

prevent useless current absorption from

draining the battery.

Never, under any circumstances, jump

start the engine by pushing, towing or

coasting downhill. This could cause fuel

to flow into the catalytic converter and

damage it beyond repair.

A quick burst on the accelerator before

stopping the engine serves no practical

purpose; it wastes fuel and is especially

damaging to turbocharged engines.

WHEN PARKED

Always remove the key from the

ignition device when leaving the car.

When parking and leaving the car,

proceed as follows:

engage a gear (1st gear if facing

uphill or reverse if facing downhill) and

leave the wheels turned;

stop the engine and engage the

parking brake.

Block the wheels with a wedge or a

stone if the car is parked on a steep

slope.

On versions with Dualogic
transmission, 1st gear or reverse must

be engaged with the foot on the brake

pedal and, if on a slope, the parking

brake must be operated in order to

park safely.

WARNING NEVER leave the car with

the transmission in neutral (on versions

equipped with Dualogic transmission,

this is indicated by the letter N on the

display).

PARKING BRAKE

Engaging the parking brake

Pull lever (A) fig. 128 upwards until the

car is secured. Four or five clicks are

generally enough when the car is on

level ground while ten or eleven may be

required if the car is on a steep slope

and laden: if it is not so, contact a Fiat

Dealership to have it adjusted.

Releasing the parking brake

Slightly raise lever (A) and hold button

(B) pressed, checking that the

warning light switches off in the

instrument panel.

Press the brake pedal when carrying

out this operation to prevent the car

from moving accidentally.

Never leave children unattended in

the car. Always remove the key from the

ignition device when leaving the car and

take it with you.

armrest, lift it up to ensure that it does not

Reverse engagement

1.4 16V versions: to engage reverse

gear R from neutral, lift the ring (A)

fig. 129 under the knob and at the

same time move the lever to the right

and then backwards.

1.3 16V Multijet version: to engage

reverse R from neutral position, move

the lever to the right and then back.

1.6 16V Multijet version (for

versions/markets, where provided): to

engage reverse gear R from the neutral

position, lift up ring A located under

the knob and simultaneously move the

lever to the left and then forwards.
To engage 6th gear (for

versions/markets, where provided),

push firmly to the right when operating
the lever in order to avoid selecting 4th

gear by mistake. The same applies to
the shift from 6th to 5th gear.

WARNING Reverse can only be

engaged when the car is completely

stationary. With the engine running,

wait for at least 2 seconds with the

clutch pedal fully pressed before

engaging reverse to prevent damage to

the gears and grating.

WARNING The clutch pedal should

be used only for gear changes. Do

not drive with your foot resting on

the clutch pedal, however lightly. For

versions/markets where provided, the

electronic clutch control could cut in,

interpreting the incorrect driving style

as a fault.

Press the clutch pedal fully to shift

gears correctly. It is therefore essential that

there is nothing under the pedals: make

sure the mats are lying flat and do not get

in the way of the pedals.

Do not drive with your hand resting on

the gear lever as the force exerted, even if

slight, could lead over time to premature

wear of the gearbox internal components.

The gear lever (A) fig. 130 is the

multistable floating type, in other words

it has three stable and three unstable

positions.

to neutral (N), reverse (R) and the

central position located between

the unstable positions (+) and (-).

The central position of the gear lever

identifies forward gear.
The unstable positions, in other

words those that are abandoned as

soon as the lever is released, are

the positions for requesting a higher

gear (+), requesting a lower gear (

–

)

and requesting to switch mode from

automatic to manual and vice versa

(A/M).

WARNING With the engine started,

any error between the lever position

and the gear actually engaged is

signalled by a buzzer until consistency

is restored.

OPERATING MODE

The transmission can function in two

operating modes:

MANUAL

in which the driver decides

when to shift gear

AUTO

in which the system decides

when to shift gear

MANUAL MODE

Proceed as follows:

press the brake pedal and start the

engine;

push the gear lever towards (+) to

engage first gear (if starting from N or

R, simply place the lever in the middle

position) or R to engage reverse;

in case of forward gear, the view on

the display must be “M1”, “M2” (see

figure), etc. If this is not so, move the

A/M to activate manual mode;

release the brake pedal and press

the accelerator pedal;

while driving, push the gear lever

towards (+) to engage the next gear up

or towards (

–

) to engage the next gear

down.
If the gear change request may

adversely affect the correct operation of

the engine and the transmission, the

system will not allow it. In such cases

the system will warn the driver that the

gears cannot be changed by means of

an acoustic signal. The system will also

automatically downshift if the engine is

idling (e.g. during deceleration).

WARNING For the correct use of the

system only use your right foot to

operate the pedal unit.

AUTOMATIC MODE

(AUTO)

Proceed as follows:

press the brake pedal and start the

engine;

push the gear lever towards (+) to

engage first gear (if starting from N or

R, simply place the lever in the middle

position) or R to engage reverse;

in case of forward gear, the view on

the display must be “A1”, “A2” (see

figure), etc. If this is not so, move the

A/M to activate automatic mode;

release the brake pedal and press

the accelerator pedal: the gear

most suited to the car speed will be

engaged.

AUTO-ECO OPERATION

To activate the function press the ECO

button fig. 131. The ECO function can

be only activated only with automatic

mode active.

With the ECO function active, the

system will select the most suitable

gear depending on the car speed,

engine rpm and intensity with which the

accelerator pedal is pressed, with the

aim of limiting fuel consumption.

“Kick Down” FUNCTION

(for versions/markets, where provided)
If necessary (e.g. when overtaking), the

system downshifts one or more gears

when the accelerator is depressed

beyond the point where it becomes

stiff (and if the rpm allow it) in order to

provide suitable power and torque for

the required acceleration.

WARNING The use of the “Kick Down”

function is recommended only when

overtaking or accelerating quickly, in

order not to increase fuel consumption.

STEERING WHEEL

CONTROLS

(for versions/markets, where provided)

On some versions, the transmission

can be managed sequentially using the

steering wheel controls fig. 132.
To use the controls on the steering

wheel, the gear lever must be in the

central position between (+) and (

–

).

To engage a higher gear

: pull the

right stalk (+) toward the steering

wheel.

To engage a lower gear

: pull the

right stalk (-) toward the steering wheel.

The engagement of a lower (or higher)

gear is only permitted if the engine revs

allow it.

INDICATIONS ON THE

DISPLAY

When the ignition key is turned to the

MAR position, after about 1 second,

the display will show the engaged gear.

WARNING If 10 seconds elapse with

the ignition key in the MAR position and

the display does not show the gear

engaged, turn the key to the STOP

position, wait for the display to turn off

and then repeat the procedure. If the

fault persists, contact a Fiat Dealership.

STARTING THE ENGINE

Engine starting is allowed both

with a gear engaged and with the

transmission in neutral (N).

However, the brake pedal must

always be pressed first if neutral is not

engaged. It is advisable to place the

gear lever in neutral (N) before starting

the engine.
After starting:

the transmission automatically

engages neutral (N);

the lever remains in the position

where it was left;

the display shows the letter (N) and,

when the brake pedal is released,

a buzzer signals any inconsistency

between the position of the lever and

the gear engaged;

the following gears can be engaged:

1st, 2nd or reverse (R).

WARNING If start-up is requested with

the transmission in a position other

than neutral (N) and without the brake

pedal pressed, a dedicated message

will appear on the display. In this

case, repeat the starting manoeuvre,

pressing the brake pedal.

WARNING If starting is requested with

a transmission failure, carry out the

“Delayed start-up” procedure: when

the key is turned to AVV for at least

7 seconds with brake pressed, the

engine will be started. The system will

stay in recovery mode (maximum gear

permitted: 3rd). If the engine does not

start, contact a Fiat Dealership.

MOVING THE CAR

Moving the car (setting off), is permitted
in 1st gear, in 2nd gear (recommended

on road surfaces with poor grip) or in

reverse (R).

1th speed engagement

Proceed as follows:

press the brake pedal;

with the lever in (N) or (R), move it

to the middle position or, if the lever

is already in middle position, move it

towards (+);

release the brake pedal and press

the accelerator pedal (fully depressing

the pedal quickly to the end of travel

position and switching off the ASR, if

fitted, results in a “lively” departure).

2th speed engagement

Proceed as follows:

press the brake pedal;

with the lever in (N) or (R), move the

lever to the middle position and then

towards (+) or, with lever already in

middle position, move it towards (+)

twice;

release the brake pedal and press

the accelerator pedal.

Uphill departures in 1st and 2nd

gear

During uphill departures in 1st or 2nd

gear on medium-steep inclines, it is

advisable to use the parking brake as

well.
With car stationary, on a road with

a gradient higher than 5%, engine

running, brake pedal pressed and

transmission in neutral (N), or gear

different from reverse (R) engaged,

the Hill Holder function automatically

activates, in order to facilitate starting.

Engaging reverse gear (R)

Proceed as follows:

press the brake pedal (car

completely stationary);

place the lever in (R);

release the brake pedal and press

the accelerator pedal.

WARNING If the car is moving, the

request is accepted and carried out

if the car speed is less than 3 km/h

within 1.5 seconds of the request. If the

request is not accepted, the system will

hold the previously engaged gear. If the

speed of the car drops below 10 km/h,

the system will put the transmission in

neutral (N) and the procedure will have

to be repeated.

ACOUSTIC WARNING

For safety reasons, there is a buzzer

warning when parking the car with the

transmission in neutral (N) (the warning

is heard when the ignition key is turned

to the STOP position).
With the car stationary, the engine
started and 1st, 2nd or Reverse gear

engaged, the system activates the

acoustic signal and automatically puts

the transmission in neutral (N) when:

the accelerator and/or brake pedal

are not operated for at least 3 minutes;

the brake pedal is pressed for longer

than 10 minutes;

the driver's door is opened and

the accelerator pedal or the brake

pedal are not operated for at least 1.5

seconds;

an anomaly has been detected in the

transmission.

PARKING THE CAR

To park safely it is essential to engage
1st gear or reverse (R), with your foot

on the brake pedal and, if there is a

gradient, to operate the parking brake.
Once the engine is off and the ignition

key is turned to STOP it is essential to

wait for the gear engaged indication

to disappear from the display before

releasing the brake pedal.

WARNING NEVER leave the car with

the transmission in neutral (N).

GENERAL WARNINGS

With car stationary and gear

engaged, always keep the brake pedal

pressed until you decide to set off,

then release the brake and accelerate

gradually.

During prolonged stops with the

engine running, it is advisable to keep

the transmission in neutral (N).

In order to safeguard the efficiency of

the clutch, do not use the accelerator

to keep the car stationary (e.g. when

stopped on an incline). The clutch

could overheat and be damaged: use

the brake pedal or the parking brake

and only operate the accelerator pedal

when you decide to set off.

With car stationary, on a road with

a gradient higher than 5%, engine

running, brake pedal pressed and

transmission in neutral (N), or gear

different from reverse (R) engaged,

the Hill Holder function automatically

activates, in order to facilitate starting.

Only use 2nd gear during take-off

with car stationary when you need

greater control for manoeuvres on

surfaces with poor grip.

If, with reverse gear (R) engaged, you

have to engage 1st gear or vice versa,

only do this when the car is completely

stationary and with the brake pedal

pressed.

If driving downhill it is necessary

to proceed with transmission in

neutral (N) for unexpected reasons

(please remember that this is

strongly unadvisable), when a gear

engagement is requested the system

will automatically engage the best gear

for the correct transmission of drive

torque to the wheels, depending on the

speed of the car.

When necessary, with the engine

switched off it is possible to engage 1st

gear or reverse (R) with key in the MAR

position and the brake pressed. In this

case, change gear leaving at least 5

seconds between one gear change

and the next, in order to safeguard the

operation of the hydraulic system, and

the pump in particular.

Fully depressing the accelerator

pedal quickly and deactivating the

ASR, if present, (by pushing the

dedicated button on the central tunnel),

activates a function which permits a

“lively” departure.

For uphill departures, it is advisable

to accelerate gradually but fully

immediately after releasing the parking

brake or the brake pedal; this allows

the engine to temporarily increase

the number of revs and tackle the

The Start&Stop system automatically

stops the engine whenever the car is

stationary and all the conditions for

automatic switch-off are met. The

engine is restarted when the driver

wants to move off.

In this way, the car efficiency is

increased, by reducing consumption,

emission of harmful gases and noise

pollution.

OPERATING MODE

transmission

reverse gear engaged (e.g. for

parking manoeuvres);

ENGINE RESTARTING

CONDITIONS

Due to comfort, emission control and

safety reasons, the engine can restart

automatically without any action by the

driver, when the car and the passenger

compartment climate control system

are in certain conditions, such as.
With gear engaged, automatic engine

restarting is possible only by fully

pressing the clutch pedal.

SAFETY FUNCTIONS

When the engine is stopped through

the Start&Stop system, if the driver

releases their seat belt or opens the

driver's or passenger's door, the

engine can be restarted only by using

the ignition device.
This condition is indicated to the driver

both through a buzzer and a message

on the display.

ENERGY SAVING

FUNCTION

(for versions/markets, where provided)
If, following the automatic engine

restarting, the driver does not carry

out any action on the car for about 3

minutes, the Start&Stop system stops

the engine definitely, to prevent fuel

consumption.

In these cases, the engine can only be

restarted using the ignition key.
NOTE In any case, it is possible

to keep the engine running by

deactivating the Start&Stop system.

IRREGULAR OPERATION

In the event of malfunction, the

Start&Stop system is deactivated.
For the failure indications, refer to

the "Warning lights and messages"

paragraph in the "Knowing the

instrument panel" chapter.
In the event of a Start&Stop system

failure, contact a Fiat Dealership.

always contact a Fiat Dealership. Replace

the battery with a new one of the same

type (EFB - Enhanced Flooded Battery)

and specifications.

Before opening the bonnet, make

sure the engine is off and the ignition key

is in the STOP position. Always refer to the

plate inside the bonnet. We recommend

that you remove the key from the ignition

if other people remain in the vehicle. Exit

from the car only after having removed

the ignition key or having rotated it to the

STOP position. During refuelling, make

sure that the engine is off and that the

ignition key is in the STOP position.

DESCRIPTION

This is an electronically controlled

driving assistance device that

allows the desired car speed to be

maintained, without having to press

the accelerator pedal. This device can

be used at a speed above 30 km/h on

long stretches of dry, straight roads

with few variations (e.g. motorways).
It is therefore not recommended to use

this device on extra-urban roads with

traffic. Do not use the device in town.

Once the Speed Limiter is activated,

button (A) has to be pressed twice to

activate the Cruise Control.

WARNING The device cannot be

device on when it is not used. There

is a risk of inadvertently activating it

and losing control of the car due to

unexpected excessive speed.

SETTING THE DESIRED

SPEED

Proceed as follows:

to activate the device press button

when the car has reached the

desired speed, press button SET +

the device. When the accelerator

is released, the car will keep the

selected speed automatically. If

needed (e.g. when overtaking), you can

increase speed simply by pressing the

accelerator; when you release the

pedal, the car goes back to the speed

stored previously. When travelling

downhill with the device active, the car

speed may slightly exceed the set one.

INCREASING /

DECREASING SPEED

Increasing the speed

: once the

electronic Cruise Control has been

activated, the speed can be increased

by pressing button SET +.

Decreasing the speed

: with the

device activated, the speed can be

decreased by pressing button SET

DEVICE DEACTIVATION

Lightly pressing the brake pedal,

depressing the clutch to shift gear or

pressing the CANC button deactivates

the Cruise Control without deleting

the stored speed. The device can

also be deactivated if the parking

brake is engaged, if the braking

system is activated (e.g. triggering of

the ESC system) or in the event of

automatic braking activated by the City

Brake Control - “Collision Mitigation”

system. If the device is deactivated, the

instrument panel display shows the

symbol (coloured white) with CANC

next to it.
The stored speed is deleted in the

following cases:

pressing button (A) fig. 134 or

switching off the engine;

if there is a malfunction in the Cruise

Control.

RECALLING THE SPEED

Versions with manual transmission

or Dualogic transmission in manual

(MANUAL) mode

: before recalling

the previously set speed, you must

accelerate until you are close to it, then

press and release the RES button.

Versions with automatic

transmission operating in

automatic (AUTO) mode

: press and

release the RES button to recall the

previously set speed.

DISENGAGEMENT OF

To disengage the device, press button
