REMOVAL

(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

cable.

(2) Remove the door trim panel (Refer to 23 -

BODY/DOOR - FRONT/TRIM PANEL - REMOVAL).

(3) Disconnect the electrical harness connector and

remove switch (Fig. 2).

INSTALLATION

(1) Install switch to door trim panel and connect

electrical harness connector.

(2) Install door trim panel (Refer to 23 - BODY/

DOOR - FRONT/TRIM PANEL - INSTALLATION).

(3) Connect battery negative cable.

SIDEVIEW MIRROR

DESCRIPTION

Each power mirror head contains two electric

motors, two drive mechanisms, and the mirror glass.
One motor and drive controls mirror vertical move-
ment, and the other controls horizontal movement.

The power mirror assembly cannot be repaired. If

any component of the power mirror unit is faulty or
damaged, the entire assembly must be replaced.
(Refer to 23 - BODY/EXTERIOR/SIDE VIEW MIR-
ROR - REMOVAL).

OPERATION

When the mirror is supplied with battery current

and ground, it moves the mirror glass through its
drive unit in one direction. When the battery current
and ground feeds to the motor are reversed, it moves
the mirror case and glass in the opposite direction.

POWER WINDOWS

DESCRIPTION

The power window system is activated through

switches located in the console panel center bezel.
The window lift motors are of the permanent magnet
type with a hall effect sensor used for motor position.

OPERATION

POWER WINDOWS

A battery positive and negative connection to

either of the two motor terminals will cause the
motor to rotate in one direction. Reversing current
through these same two connections will cause the
motor to rotate in the opposite direction. Each motor
is controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM).

The BCM controls the logic for the power windows.

The BCM receives a muxed input from each window
switch. The BCM uses the information to control the
operation of the power windows if the ignition is in
Run or Accessory (including delay).

An auto-down feature allows either window to be low-

ered all the way, even if the window switch is released.
Each window has a switch that must be depressed in
the down direction to a second detent to begin the auto-
down function. Depressing the switch again in any
direction will immediately stop the window.

Another feature is Smart Glass. The window glass

is designed to slide up into a seal to prevent the win-
dows from “popping” out at high speeds. To prevent
the glass from hanging up on the seal, the BCM
drops the glass when the door is opened, and returns
it to the full up position once the door is closed.

SMART GLASS FEATURE

The Smart Glass feature of the power window sys-

tem drops the window 10 mm when the doors are

unlatched. This allows the window glass to clear the
weather strip that the glass seals in.

The distance the windows drop is based on the

learned “up stop” of the window. Each power window
motor has a Hall effect switch that the Body Control
Module (BCM) uses to monitor window movement.
When the window stops moving while the switch is
still being pressed, it memorizes this position as the
“up stop” and calculates the window drop from this
position. The Hall effect switch is also used by the
BCM to shut off electrical current to each power win-
dow motor when it has stopped moving.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - POWER

Any diagnosis of the Power Windows system

should begin with the use of scan tool and the
appropriate Diagnostic Service Manual.

Refer to the appropriate wiring information. The

wiring information includes wiring diagrams, proper
wire and connector repair procedures, details of wire
harness routing and retention, connector pin-out
information and location views for the various wire
harness connectors, splices and grounds.

This wiring test determines whether or not voltage

is continuous through the wiring harness to the
power window switch.

Remove switch for testing (Refer to 8 - ELECTRI-

CAL/POWER

SWITCH - REMOVAL). Connect the voltmeter posi-
tive lead to pin 1 and the negative lead to pin 2 of
the switch wire harness connector. Voltmeter should
read approximately 5 volts. If OK, (Refer to 8 -

OK, check for a broken wire.

POWER WINDOW SWITCH

DESCRIPTION

The driver and passenger power window switches

are located on the center console bezel. The switches
are identical with a separate resistively multiplexed
input to the Body Control Module (BCM).

Each switch has four positions: Off/Diagnostic, Up,

Down and Auto Down. The switches are illuminated
by a Light Emitting Diode (LED) when the ignition
key is in the RUN position.

OPERATION

The power window switches provide an up or down

signal to the Body Control Module (BCM). The BCM
circuitry controls the output to the driver and pas-
senger door power window motors, and supplies elec-
trical

current

required

for

the

stand-alone

operation.

Each power window switch has two detent posi-

tions in the down direction. The first detent provides
normal power window operation. If this switch is
depressed to the second detent, the auto down cir-
cuitry of the BCM is activated. The auto-down cir-
cuitry will automatically move the door window to
the fully lowered position, even if the window switch
is released. The auto-down function will be automat-
ically cancelled and the window movement will be
stopped if the BCM detects a second input from the
same switch, in either direction.

Any diagnosis of the Power Windows system

should begin with the use of scan tool and the

Refer to the appropriate wiring information. The

window switch resistance test table to determine if
resistance is correct. If the correct results are not
obtained, replace the switch.

NOTE: Each wire harness connector is marked left
or right, but can be interchanged between the two
switches.

(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

cable.

(2) Remove the center console bezel (Refer to 23 -

BODY/INTERIOR/CENTER

(3) Remove switch from center console bezel.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: It is possible to interchange the connectors
between the two switches. Ensure that the windows
function properly after window switch installation.

(1) Install switch to center console bezel.
(2) Install the center console bezel (Refer to 23 -

BODY/INTERIOR/CENTER

INSTALLATION).

(3) Connect the battery negative cable.

WINDOW MOTOR

DESCRIPTION

Each door has a permanent magnet reversible elec-

tric motor with a hall effect sensor. This hall effect
sends an alternating signal (open/ground) to the
Body control Module (BCM) whenever the window
motor is moving.

The hall effect sensor and motor is serviced with

the regulator as an assembly (Refer to 23 - BODY/
DOOR

FRONT/WINDOW

REGULATOR

REMOVAL).

OPERATION

A positive and negative battery connection to the

two motor terminals will cause the power window
motor to rotate in one direction. Reversing the cur-
rent through these same two connections will cause
the motor to rotate in the opposite direction.

Because the Body Control Module (BCM) drives

the window, it can sense when the top and bottom
travel has been reached and stop driving the window
regardless of the window switch position (no hall
pulses within 50 mSeconds). The BCM considers the
Hall Effect faulted if no pulses are sensed when the
window is driven up and down. When this condition
is detected, the BCM will activate the motor until the
switch is released or a stuck fault is set (10 seconds).
In addition, each power window motor is equipped
with an integral self-resetting circuit breaker to pro-
tect the motor from overloads.

The driver side motor is controlled directly by the

BCM. The passenger side motor receives current
through a window up relay and a window down relay.
These are located near the steering column. The up
and down window relays are controlled by the BCM.

There is also a 30 Amp fuse in the Power Distribu-

tion Center (PDC) to protect the passenger window
circuits. The BCM protects the driver window circuits
(10 amps).

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - WINDOW MOTOR

(1) Remove door trim panel
(2) Connect positive (+) lead from a test battery to

the window motor(s) that is inoperative to either of
the two motor terminals.

(3) Connect negative (-) lead from test battery to

remaining motor terminal.

(4) The motor should now rotate in one direction to

either move window up or down.

(a) If window happens to already be in full UP

position and motor is connected so as to move it in
UP direction no movement will be observed.

(b) Likewise, motor connected to move window

in DOWN direction no movement will be observed
if window is already in full DOWN position.

(c)

Reverse battery leads and window should

now move. If window does not move, check for
binding or obstructions. If no binding is present,
replace the motor.
(5) If window moved completely up or down, the

test leads should be reversed one more time to com-
plete a full window travel inspection.

(6) The window motor(s) are replaced with the

window regulator. If they are found to be faulty, a
complete replacement will be necessary (Refer to 23 -
BODY/DOOR - FRONT/WINDOW REGULATOR -
REMOVAL).
