REMOVAL

(1) Remove the propeller shaft.
(2) Mark the yokes and propeller shaft for instal-

lation reference.

(3) Remove the bearing cap retaining clips.

CAUTION: Never clamp slip yoke tube or propeller
shaft tube in a vise. Clamp only the forged portion
of the slip yoke or propeller shaft yoke in the vise.
Do not over tighten the vise jaws.

(4) Press out bearing caps with a large socket for a

reciever and a small socket as driver (Fig. 10).

(5) Tighten the vise jaws to force the bearing cap

into the larger socket (receiver).

INSTALLATION

Use

only

genuine

Mopar

universal

joints. Only Mopar universal joints can withstand
the high torque/impact loading this vehicle is capa-
ble of producing. The typical aftermarket u-joint is
not designed to meet the extreme impact loads
associated with this vehicle.

(1) Apply extreme pressure (EP), lithium-base

lubricant to aid in installation.

(2) Position the spider in the yoke. Insert the seals

and bearings. Tap the bearing caps into the yoke
bores far enough to hold the spider in position.

(3) Use sockets and a vise to press in bearing caps

(Fig. 11). Force the caps enough to install the retain-
ing clips.

(4) Install the bearing cap retaining clips.
(5) Install the yoke on the propeller shaft with the

reference marks aligned.

(6) Install the propeller shaft.

CAUTION: The propeller shaft strap bolts incorpo-
rate a Loctite patch. The screws must be replaced
or cleaned and Loctite thread locker applied when-
ever they are removed.

CAUTION: The propeller shaft universal joint straps
must be replaced. The straps slightly deform when
torqued in place. Reuse of the straps may result in
reduced clamp load on the universal joint cap.

HALF SHAFT

CAUTION

CAUTION: Never grasp half shaft assembly by the
boots. This may cause the boot to pucker or crease
and reduce the service life of the boot. Avoid over
angulating or stroking the C/V joints when handling
the half shaft.
Half shafts exposed to battery acid, transmission
fluid, brake fluid, differential fluid or gasoline may
cause the boots to deteriorate.

NOTE: If the boot or joint is damaged the half shaft
must be replaced as an assembly.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - HALF SHAFT

Check for grease at the inboard and outboard C/V

joint. This is a sign of boot or boot clamp damage.

CLUNKING NOISE DURING ACCELERATION

This noise may be a result of a damaged or worn

C/V joint. A torn boot or loose/missing clamp on the
inner/outer joint which has allowed the grease to be
lost will damage the C/V joint.

SHUDDER/VIBRATION DURING ACCELERATION

This problem could be a result of a worn/damaged

inner tripod joint or a sticking tripod joint. Improper
wheel alignment may also cause a shudder or vibra-
tion.

VIBRATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS

This problem could be a result of out of balance

front tires or tire/wheel runout. Foreign material
(mud, etc.) packed on the backside of the wheel(s)
will also cause a vibration.

REMOVAL

(1) Remove rear wheel.
(2) Remove belly pan.
(3) Remove half shaft cotter pin, nut lock and

spring washer.

(4) Remove half shaft nut and washer (Fig. 1).

(5) Remove toe link from knuckle with Puller

C-4150A (Fig. 2).

(6) Remove stabilizer link from lower control arm

(Fig. 3).

(7) Remove lower ball joint nut and separate joint

from control arm with Puller C-4150A and Spacer
6983 (Fig. 4).

(8) Remove shock clevis bolt from lower control

arm (Fig. 5).

(9) Swing knuckle out and pull half shaft out of

the hub bearing.

(10) Remove

Remover 9052 and a slide hammer.

INSTALLATION

(1) Install half shaft on the axle stub shaft.
(2) Swing knuckle out and install haft shaft into

the hub bearing.

(3) Install lower control arm ball joint into the

knuckle and tighten nut to 183 N·m (135 ft. lbs.).

(4) Install shock clevis and tighten bolt to 190 N·m

(140 ft. lbs.).

(5) Install toe link and tighten nut to 52 N·m (38

ft. lbs.).

(6) Install stabilizer link and tighten nut to 23

N·m (200 in. lbs.).

(7) Install half shaft hub nut and tighten to 258

N·m (190 ft. lbs.).

(8) Install axle shaft yoke spring washer, nut lock

and cotter pin.

(9) Install belly pan and tighten bolts to 54 N·m

(40 ft. lbs.).

(10) Install wheel.
