6. Cut off the airbag connector, then strip the ends of

the wires, and connect the special tool alligator
clips to them. Place the special tool approximately
30 feet (10 m) away from the airbag.

NOTE: The front passenger's airbag has four wires,

two green and two white. Twist each pair of like
color wires together and connect one alligator clip
to each pair.

9. Dispose of the complete airbag. No part of it can be

reused. Place it in a sturdy plastic bag, and seal it

securely.

CAUTION:

• Wear a face shield and gloves when handling a

deployed airbag.

• Wash your hands and rinse them well with

water after handing a deployed airbag.

Triggering the Seat Belt Tensioners:

NOTE: If an SRS vehicle containing one or both intact

seat belt tensioner(s) is to be entirely scrapped, the seat
belt tensioner(s) should be triggered while still in the
vehicle.
A tensioner is not a salvageable part and should never
be installed in another vehicle.

1. Disconnect both the negative cable and positive

cable from the battery.

2. Confirm that the special tool is functioning properly

by following the check procedure on the tool label
or the procedure on page 

24-175

.

3. Remove the B-pillar trim panel (see 

section 20

).

4. Cut off the seat belt tensioner connector, then strip

the wire ends and connect the special tool alligator
clips to them as shown. Place the special tool about

30 feet away from the vehicle.

7. Connect a 12 volt battery to the tool:

• If the green light on the tool comes on, the airbag

igniter circuit is defective and cannot deploy the
airbag. Go to Damaged Airbag or Side Airbag
Special Procedure.

• If the red light on the tool comes on, the airbag is

ready to be deployed.

8. Push the tool's deployment switch. The airbag

should deploy (deployment is both highly audible
and visible a loud noise and rapid inflation of the
bag, followed by slow deflation).

• If audible/visible deployment happens, and the

green light on the tool comes on, continue with
this procedure.

• If the airbag doesn't deploy, yet the green light

comes ON, its igniter is defective. Go to Damaged

Airbag or Side Airbag Special Procedure.

During deployment, the airbag can

become hot enough to burn you. Wait 30 minutes
after deployment before touching the assembly.

5. Buckle the seat belt, then pull out about 2 inches of

slack, make a loop with it, and hold the loop in

place with a clip as shown.

Simultaneously Deploying Airbags and
Triggering Seat Belt Tensioners:

1. Disconnect the negative cable and positive cable

from the battery.

2. Confirm that the special tool is functioning properly

by following the check procedure on the tool label
or the procedure on page

.

3. Disconnect the SRS main harness 18P connector

and the SRS floor harness 18P connector from the
SRS unit.

6. Connect a 12 volt battery to the tool:

• If the green light on the tool comes on, the ten-

sioner igniter circuit is defective and cannot trig-
ger the tensioner. Go to Damaged Airbag or Side
Airbag or Tensioner Special Procedure.

• If the red light on the tool comes on, the tensioner

is ready to trigger.

7. Push the tool's deployment switch to trigger the

tensioner igniter. The tensioner should take up the
slack in the belt (pop the clip off), and lock the belt

in its retracted position.

• If the tensioner works and the green light on the

tool comes on, continue with this procedure.

• If the tensioner doesn't work, yet the green light

comes on, its igniter is defective. Go to Damaged
Airbag or Side Airbag or Tensioner Special

Procedure.

During activation, the tensioner can

become hot enough to burn you. Wait 30 minutes
after activation before touching it.

8. Dispose of the complete tensioner assembly. No

part of it can be reused.

9. Repeat steps 3 thru 8 on the other side if that ten-

sioner has not been triggered.

4. Cut seven wires at the SRS main harness 18P con-

nector, and seven wires at the SRS floor harness

18P connector, as shown. Strip the ends of the

wires, then twist each of seven wires together into
two bunches.

5. Connect the alligator clips of the deployment tool to

the two bunches of twisted wires.

Deploying the Airbag/Side Airbag: Out-of-vehicle

NOTE: If an intact airbag has been removed from a

scrapped vehicle, or has been found defective or dam-
aged during transit, storage or service, it should be
deployed as follows:

Store the removed airbag with the pad

surface up, and the removed side airbag with the cau-
tion label surface up, out-doors on flat ground at least
30 feet (10 m) from any obstacles or people.

7. Repeat step 6 on the other front belt.

8. Connect a 12 volt battery to the tool:

• If the green light on the tool comes on, an igniter

circuit is defective. Go to Damaged Airbag, Side
Airbag or Seat Belt Tensioner Special Procedure.

• If the red light on the tool comes on, the system

is ready.

9. Push the tool's deployment switch. The airbags and

side airbags should deploy (deployment is both
highly audible and visible - a loud noise and rapid
inflation of the bags, followed by slow deflation).

The seat belt tensioners should take up the slack

(pop the clips off the belts), and lock the belts in
retracted positions.

• If the airbags and side airbags are deployed, the

tensioners are triggered, and the green light on
the tool comes on, continue with this procedure.

• If an airbag or a side airbag doesn't deploy or a

tensioner isn't triggered, yet the green light comes

on, an igniter is defective. Go to Damaged Airbag
or Pretensioner Special Procedure.

During airbag deployment and preten-

sioner activation the airbag and tensioner assem-
blies can become hot enough to burn you. Wait 30
minutes after activation before touching them.

10. Dispose of all the airbags and tensioners completely.

No part of them can be reused.

1. Confirm that the special tool is functioning properly

by following the check procedure on this page or on

the tool label.

2. Follow steps 6, 7, 8, and 9 of the in-vehicle deploy-

ment procedure.

Damaged Airbag or Seat Belt Tensioner Special
Procedure

If an airbag cannot be deployed, it should

not be treated as normal scrap; it should still be consid-
ered a potentially explosive device that can cause seri-
ous injury.

1. If installed in a vehicle, follow the removal proce-

dure on page 

24-160

.

2. In all cases, make a short circuit by twisting together

the two airbag inflator wires or seat belt tensioner
wires.

3. Package the airbag in exactly the same packaging

that the new replacement part came in.

4. Mark the outside of the box "DAMAGED AIRBAG

(or TENSIONER) NOT DEPLOYED" so it does not
get confused with your parts stock.

5. Contact your Acura Parts and Service Manager for

how and where to return it for disposal.

Deployment Tool: Check Procedure

1. Connect the yellow clips to both switch protector

handles on the tool; connect the tool to a battery.

2. Push the operation switch: green means the tool is

OK; red means the tool is faulty.

3. Disconnect the battery and the yellow clips.

'96-98 Models

4. Make sure the wheels are aligned straight ahead.

5. Remove the dashboard lower cover.

6. Remove the driver's airbag from the steering wheel

(two T30 Torx bolts).

7. Disconnect the connectors from the horn, radio remote

switch, and cruise control set/resume/cancel switches,
then remove the steering wheel nut.

'96 - 98 Models

Replacement

Store a removed airbag with the pad sur-

face up. If the airbag is improperly stored face down,

accidental deployment could propel the unit with
enough force to cause serious injury.

CAUTION:
• Carefully inspect the airbag before installing it. Do

not install an airbag that shows signs of being
dropped or improperly handled, such as dents,
cracks or deformation.

• Do not disassemble or tamper with the airbag.

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the

radio, then write down the frequencies for the
radio's preset buttons.

2. Disconnect the battery negative cable, then discon-

nect the positive cable from the battery, and wait at
leasts minutes.

3. Remove the access panel from the steering wheel,

then disconnect the 2P connector between the driv-
er's airbag and cable reel.

NOTE: When disconnected, the airbag connector is
automatically shorted.
