The Fussy family - Mr. and Mrs. Fussy, their daughter Candy and Mr. Fussy’s
mother Grandma Fussy - have been traveling in Russia for a week. Tomorrow is
their last day in Moscow and each of them has their own idea about what to do on
their last afternoon in the Russian capital. Imagine that you are their tour guide
and need to choose the right place to take them to. There are 3 places you are
thinking about that might be just right.
Task 1
Read the information about the 3 places that might be interesting for the Fussy
family to visit on their last afternoon in Moscow and answer the questions that
follow.
Now you have 15 minutes to read the texts and answer the questions that follow.
(Pause 15 minutes)
Task 2
Now listen to the Fussy family members speak about what they would like to do on
their last afternoon in Moscow and decide where you as a tour guide should take
them.
Grandma Fussy:
I’ve had so much fun on this trip! I absolutely loved it! I have seen everything I
wanted to see, and the only thing that I need to do is buy some souvenirs for all my
friends! There are 7 elderly ladies back home who are waiting for me to come back
and tell them all about my trip. I would really like to bring them something special,
very Russian, something they could wear, like earrings maybe or necklaces or scarves
- we all like that kind of stuff! We are elderly but very fashionable ladies! The only
thing is, to be honest, I’m quite tired - my 80-year-old legs are not used to so much
walking! So, if we go somewhere tomorrow, it shouldn’t involve too much walking.
Mr. Fussy:
This trip has been fascinating! My biggest hobby is learning about history, and I’ve
learnt so much on this trip already! But you can never learn enough or too much! So,
if we have a free afternoon tomorrow, I would be happy if we could visit another
museum, it doesn’t have to be big, but it should be about something old and special.

The older, the better! The beginning of Moscow, maybe, - if it is at all possible.
However, I want it to be interesting for all the rest as well.
Mrs. Fussy:
This has been such an enjoyable trip! I can’t believe we’ve managed to see so much
in just one week! The only thing that I would love to do tomorrow afternoon - if it is
possible - is to go to the theatre. I love drama, but of course, there is a big problem
with the language - none of us can understand Russian! So, I guess this leaves us few
choices - like a musical or an opera or maybe a ballet. Do you think we could find
something like that?
Candy Fussy:
Yeah, I agree, the trip was really cool! I loved everything! Especially the Metro and
the ice-cream! I don’t really have any special ideas for tomorrow. But if we could
find some nice T-shirts or sweatshirts with a print of something about Moscow, that
would be great. I wouldn’t mind buying a couple of those - for myself and for my
best friend Betty. Something to remember this trip by. Betty and I always bring each
other T-shirts from the places we visit.

READING
Time: 45 minutes (20 points)
Task 1 (10 points)
For items 1-10, read the passage below and choose the option which best fits
according to the text.
Leaving London for Coventry
Hayley Myers was worried about relocating back to her home city of Coventry
after a decade in London, but she hasn’t looked back ever since.
During those seemingly endless days of working from home in the midst of the
lockdown, we decided that enough was enough. My husband and I were squeezed
around the dining table, one eye on our laptops and the other on our restless toddler.
The living room as well as the flat itself felt cramped and crowded. I was excited,
nervous and constantly worried about how to cope with another newborn under the
current strict social restrictions, and later the high costs of having two children in a
nursery.
By that time, Mark (my husband) and I had lived in London for almost 10
years and owned a shabby but much-loved flat in a remote southeastern part of the
city. It was an enjoyable and exciting time. We both had good jobs, with a great
support network of friends. We actually accepted all inconveniences as part and
parcel of city living. We could not and did not want to ask for more. It was only
during the pandemic that we got fully aware of all the annoying inconveniences. The
walls of our windowless bathroom were constantly damp, the taps were leaky, the
ceiling mildewy. The concrete rectangle of our balcony seemed dreary and tiny, and
the creaks of the lift right next to our front door disturbed our sleep all night long.
Ours wasn’t a unique situation. According to the estate agent Hamptons, 2022
saw more than 150,000 households leave London in search of larger homes, peace
and quiet. As for our family, deciding where to move was never particularly difficult,
because we had always planned to return to my beloved hometown, Coventry. Living
in the countryside or close to the sea was appealing, besides it meant being
geographically closer to our family and old friends we had desperately missed during
our time in London.
It was a no-brainer, really, simple and clear, and it was a while before we took
the plunge. There was an unshakeable sense that leaving London was a failure of
sorts. I kept thinking if going back to where we started was in fact admitting defeat?
Slightly embarrassingly, there was also a fear of missing out, both socially and
professionally. We’d spent years working hard in the live-music industry, burning
both ends of the candle at gigs, clubs and festivals. And now I was irrationally
panicked by the idea of letting my old life go. But we needn’t have worried.

Our new home is a rented terrace in the northwest of the city, and to us it feels
nothing short of a whole palace. We open cupboards and marvel when nothing
immediately topples out. Moving the sofa in order to sit down for tea at the dining
table is no longer necessary. There are stairs and plentiful windows and a front lawn
with an apple tree and a blossoming rhododendron near the porch.
I’ve painted an idyllic picture of a grand homecoming, but it would be
untruthful to say there haven’t been downsides. Going to London by train every
Thursday for our jobs seemed perfectly reasonable before we attempted it. It turned
out it requires patience for the neverending train delays and determination to find a
seat where you can wolf down an overpriced sandwich. But we think it a minor
inconvenience and don’t care much.
I’m also anxious that my kids will resent this move to suburbia when they’re
older, that they’ll struggle to understand the reasons why we left behind the
opportunities the capital offers. Of course, we will always miss London, but we know
that Coventry is the best place for us right now. The diversity of the local school is a
reflection of the city as a whole, and we are heartened that our children will grow and
learn with friends from different cultures. Now I can work happily, listening to them
laughing with my parents in the room next door, and it reminds me that for our family
there really is no place like home.

A) rented a flat in the centre of the capital.
B) did not mind any inconveniences of their flat.
C) planned to move somewhere to the countryside.

4. (10) At the time of the pandemic Hayley and Mark realized that their flat in London

all over Russia. (9) ____________.
In the beginning, in Russia Christmas trees were decorated with edible

being just “funny” or “nice pieces,” the themes of the ornaments were meant to

For Questions 1-15, read the text below and look carefully at each line. Some of the
lines are correct, and some have a word which should not be there.
If a line is correct put a tick. Use letter "V" as a tick. If a line has a word which
should not be there, write the word in a given space. There are two examples at the

Virtuous Nature

Can animals really have a sense of right and wrong? Experts
V
think they do.
00
If you think that we are the only creatures on Earth with a moral
the
sense, then you’re in the good company.
1
Most experts in behavior believe that morality is a uniquely
human trait, without which our complex social life would never
been
have been emerged - yet I’m convinced that many animals can
distinguish right from wrong.
2
Decades spent watching wild and captive animals have persuaded
me that species living in groups often have a sense of fair play
very
built on moral codes of conduct that help cement their very social
relationships.
3
The notion of Nature on being naturally competitive doesn’t hold
true for those of us who have observed and analyzed animal
on
relationships.
4
That’s not all. I suspect that herein lies the origin of our own
virtue. Biologists have had real problems trying to explain why
V
people are frequently inexplicably nice to each other.
5
It just doesn’t make sense in evolutionary terms, unless there are
far
ulterior motives far behind our seemingly altruistic actions.
6
Perhaps we expect getting a payback somewhere down the line,
or may be our good deeds are directed only towards kin, with
getting
whom we share a biological heritage.

7
Nobody has been really considered the possibility that being
considerate to our neighbors might sometimes be the best way to
been
survive.
8
But I’m starting to find evidence that a well-developed sense of
fair play helps non-human animals live longer, more successful
V
lives.
9
I’m particularly interested in a social play amongst youngsters
because it has its own special rules of engagement, allowing
a
participants to reinterpret acts that might otherwise seem
aggressive.
10
My studies of infant dogs, wolves and coyotes bound reveal that
they use a special signal to prevent misinterpretation of playful
bound
actions.
11
They perform a “bow”- which reminds entails crouching on the
forelimbs while keeping the rear upright- when initiating play, or
reminds
in association with aggressive actions such as biting, to modify
their meaning.
12
And role reversal is far common, so that during play a dominant
far
animal will often allow a subordinate to have the upper hand.
13
Such behaviors reduce inequalities in size, strength and
dominance between playmates, fostering co-operation and
V
reciprocity that are essential for play to occur.
14
Indeed, on the rare occasions when an animal says “Let’s play”
and then beats up an unsuspecting animal, the culprit usually
both
finds itself both ostracized by its former playmates.
15
While animal minds may vary from one species to another, they
are not so different from our own, and if only when we accept
if
this can we truly be moral in our relations with nature as a whole.

Now we begin.
Over the past centuries, the melodic and lyrical Russian language has charmed quite a
few people. They admired it and complained about its complexity and challenges, but
nevertheless persisted in their attempt to learn and speak “the great and mighty
Russian language”.
One of these people was Herbert G. Wells. The famed writer visited Russia three
times, the first time in 1914. Before the author of ‘The Invisible Man’ set out on his
journey, he studied the Russian language with much alacrity. At least, he had tried.
He later admitted to remembering only the words that he learned using the Latin
alphabet. This was how he taught himself to count to one hundred in Russian.
After his two-week trip to Russia, Wells penned an essay “What is Coming? A
Forecast of Things after the War”, in which he suggested introducing Russian as a
third foreign language in schools in Great Britain, in addition to French and German.
The great writer thought that the major challenge in learning Russian consisted in its
Cyrillic script, which Wells referred to as the “irrational spelling of words”. He
suggested using Latin transcriptions and even publishing Russian-language books in
the Latin script. Even more interesting, in his novel ‘Joan and Peter’, the main
characters travel from St. Petersburg to Moscow, just like the writer himself. The
book abounds in descriptions of the capital with its bright shop windows, the Kremlin
walls, sledge rides along the frozen river, as well as performances at the legendary
Moscow Art Theatre.
Alexandre Dumas was another one who tried to learn Russian. The author of
‘The Three Musketeers’ traveled across Russia at the suggestion of Earl Grigory
Kushelev-Bezborodko. His route wasn’t limited to only Moscow and St. Petersburg,
and he also sailed along the Volga River to Astrakhan and visited the Caucasus. He
wrote several books about Russia, as well as published a newspaper featuring his
travel notes. In total, the writer spent a year in Russia, and eventually mastered the
1

language. He noted in his travel essays that
“Russian doesn’t have neutral
expressions”, with its “choice of insults being as wide as that of expressions denoting
affection and love”. Apart from his travel notes, Dumas managed to translate into
French some poetry by Nikolay Nekrasov, who he had met in St. Petersburg, as well
as works by Pyotr Vyazemsky and Alexander Pushkin. To do this, he made use of
literal translations by writer and translator Dmitry Grigorovich.

house three times now, and I still haven't met your parents.
Melanie: Yes, they're out a lot. My dad works for the BBC and my mum's er, she
does sort of temping work for a company. You know, like an advertising agency.
They're both really busy.
Simon: Oh, they sound really interesting.
Melanie: Do you think so? I find my dad a bit dull, to be honest. He works late every
day, even works some weekends, doesn't read, doesn't go out. I mean, don't get me
wrong, he's quite nice, but I don't know, I just don’t have anything to say to him. I
think the thing is, we just don’t spend enough time together.
Simon: How old is he, then?
Melanie: About fifty-five, I think. I can never really remember.
Simon: Oh, yeah.
Melanie: But my mum's lovely. She's really nice, a bit too nice though, sometimes,
always trying to look after me. She worries about me leaving home. She's a bit over-
protective, if you know what I mean. I'm an only child, so ...
Simon: Oh, I didn't know that.

Task 1 (10 points)
For items 1-10, read the passage below and choose the option which best fits
according to the text.
From London to Berlin
Irish author Naoise Dolan on moving to live in the German capital
I moved to Berlin last summer from London, where I had essentially suffered a
burnout, depression and emotional collapse. This explanation doesn’t go well in small
talk, so I tend to claim instead that I wanted a change of scene.
At the time, my debut novel had been published two years earlier and had
gathered a lot of attention. That might sound like a dream come true - but over the
months that followed, I was driven progressively more insane by my chronic inability
to say no. I tried to be thankful for the flood of media requests and speaking
invitations, endless interviews chat shows, Q&A sessions and other public
appearances I was asked to make. But that just didn’t’ work out. I never craved for all
that attention. I told myself that most people would regard it as a nice problem to
have. To me it turned into a nightmare.
For as long as I could, I denied that anything was wrong. Throughout my early
years and adolescence, I found it difficult to communicate and form relationships. I
was used to hiding my difficulties and neglecting my own wellbeing in an attempt not
to burden others. I could never get used to quick changes and always stuck to my
well-established daily patterns. There were definitely moments when I felt like I was
on a completely different planet from the rest of the young.
But by early 2022, I could no longer even vaguely pretend to be holding things
together. I struck the bottom when I couldn’t sleep for three whole days, by the end
of which my feet had swollen, I twitched at background noises and my own voice
sounded as if it were coming from several meters away. After finally managing to
sleep on the third night, I woke up sixteen hours later to several missed phone calls.
Someone from my literary agency had come to a nearby coffee shop with a contract I
urgently needed to sign, and had waited in vain for an hour. That was the turning
point.
Exactly around that time, I visited an Irish friend in Berlin. At my first night in
Berlin, I took the tram in the dark, carried my suitcase up the communal stairs in my
friend’s apartment building and slept more soundly on her small polyester couch than
I ever had in my London double bed in the semi-detached house. In the morning I
walked around the neighbourhood, enjoying the wide pavements and abundance of
trees.
Consider this January trip the first beat in my spiralling romance with Berlin. I
returned in the spring to stay another few days and I moved that summer. It was a no-
3

brainer. I had no second thoughts about it. Relocating to Berlin has improved my
mental health in two main ways. The first is that I’m less professionally
overwhelmed. I’m asked to do fewer things now, since it’s a hassle to bring me to
London - and when I do feel swamped with work, I’m finding it easier to speak up.
Daily exposure to German directness has cured me of my once-consuming need to be
liked.
Better yet, learning German has toned-down my perfectionism. Many young
Berliners instantly switch to English when they hear the slightest trace of any accent.
At first I took this personally, interpreted each English response as a minus. Over
time, I toughened up. Nowadays I rarely get hit with English - and when I do, I
choose to see it as their own desire to practice. I asked my German friends “Why do
you reply in English to me if I’ve just spoken perfectly fine German?” They were
uniformly baffled that anyone could get upset. “Of course” they say “you speak
English with English-speakers - for us it’s just a matter of politeness!”
Did I need to move to Berlin to get happy? Maybe not. But I needed to do
something and this thing worked. I love writing again, love people, love being alive
and learning words of the German-yet-unknown.

H. The striking scenery of the park and wild Yakut nature make it the pearl of the

J. They were formed from the mountains and remains of plants and animals that
lived on the territory of Yakutia more than 500 million years ago.
K. Another story runs that these rocks are a monument of love, fidelity and

were enchanted by the dragon.

USE OF ENGLISH
Time: 60 minutes (45 points)
(18)
Task 1. (15 points)
For Questions 1-15, read the text below and look carefully at each line. Some of the
lines are correct, and some have a word which should not be there.
If a line is correct put a tick. Use letter "V" as a tick. If a line has a word which
should not be there, write the word in a given space. There are two examples at the
beginning (0 and 00).
Example:
0
V
00
such
0
Advertising will change profoundly over the next couple of
decades, although there’s a good chance you won’t notice the
V
difference, since the most meaningful changes won’t be visible to
the casual observer.
00
It’s the changes that are happening underground that will count,
and they’re the ones we should be aware of. Advertising in the
such
future will be such stealthily and eerily, targeted, disturbingly
omnipresent and inescapable.
1
Technology, naturally, will be the engine. User-tracking software
that records your TV and Internet viewing habits in minute detail
- and crosses it with your purchasing history - will allow the
far
advertiser to know that you have children, that you eat meat, that
your native tongue is Spanish and that your dishwasher is
however far many years old.
2
That way you will be shown commercials for mini-vans,
cheeseburgers, and replacement dishwashers, all in Spanish, and
not for sports cars, tofu and replacement refrigerators, in English.
In fact, this technology already exists. Refined with data that
have
track what kinds of online ads you tend to click on - funny,
sentimental, fact-laden - every commercial will have hit home.
3
Say what you will, that’s a nifty trick. In the future, people won’t
be bothered with advertising messages irrelevant to them. They’ll
tend to like advertising too better because it’s so carefully tailored
too
to their tastes and will begin to feel less like an intrusion.
8
Всероссийская олимпиада школьников. Английский язык. 2023-2024 уч. г.
Муниципальный этап. 10-11 классы
4
This works for the advertiser too because fewer dollars will be
wasted. While it’s a little dispiriting to think we can be so
V
predictably manipulated, maybe that’s a fair price to pay to avoid
the pollution of messages you don’t care about.
5
Nevertheless, it seems clear that the advertising outlets that exist
today - TV and audio commercials, prints ads, billboards and taxi
tops - will be inadequate for accommodating all the commercial
of
messages that are agitating to get out of.
6
Advertising will therefore inevitably slip beyond within the
boundaries of the 30-second commercial and the full-page ad and
within
migrate to the rest of the world, including entertainment,
journalism and art.
7
You can glimpse the future now. A product placement in movies
is an obvious instance of where advertising has slipped outside its
a
traditional container into entertainment.
8
The music channels which are an entertainment medium designed
specially to sell records are another classic example. Every time
V
an artist mentions a brand in their lyrics, advertising slips into art.
9
It you have a tattoo of your team’s name, you’re already there. If
you wear a T-shirt with a logo on it, you’re also there but with
made
less pain. Eventually, every surface that can display a message
will be made appropriated for advertising.
10
A backlash is inevitable. Perhaps people will be pay a premium to
be
live in advertising-free zones.
11
People get very nervous when they see the line being blurring
between advertising and other forms of content; they think
advertising is some kind of infection that pollutes the purity of
being
art, ruins objectivity and distracts from the pleasure of
entertainment.
12
Yet this is missing the point. Surely consumers are smart and
perfectly aware of when they’re being sold something; surely
people who go to company websites are happy to find worthwhile
of
information there and are capable of distinguishing between a
commercial message and an editorial one.
13
In the main, art and journalism have long relied on direct subsidy
from private sources. Don’t think for a minute that commercial
V
interests didn’t enter into it.
9
Всероссийская олимпиада школьников. Английский язык. 2023-2024 уч. г.
Муниципальный этап. 10-11 классы
14
The genuinely disturbing aspect remains of advertising is that it
has begun to take over what was formally the property of the
community. Take, for example, the popular Boston Garden park,
naturally named after the city. It is now known as the “Fleet
remains
Center”, after the sponsoring bank. A little town in the Pacific
Northwest just renamed itself after a dotcom company in return
for a generous denotation.
15
I won’t mention the name here, since I figure advertising should
be paid for it. That’s when advertising has gone too far: when it’s
it
become something we are, rather than something we see.

Примечания к критериям оценивания
1.
При определении типа ошибки
(лексическая, грамматическая,
орфографическая) следует руководствоваться следующими указаниями:
Лексическими ошибками считаются
• ошибки в неправильном употреблении слова в контексте;
• ошибки в словосочетании;
• пропуск слова, когда это не влияет на грамматическую структуру
предложения;
• ошибки в словообразовании (если не меняется часть речи: regular- unregular);
• послелоги во фразовых глаголах;
• ошибки в написании слов, которые меняют значение слова (think-thing, lose-
loose).
(contribute
-
contribution).
• употребление its вместо it’s или наоборот.
Орфографическими ошибками считаются
ошибки в написании слов, которые не приводят к образованию нового слова
(different - differen).
если один раз слово написано правильно, а другой раз неправильно
-
неправильное написание считать орфографической ошибкой
2. Однотипные ошибки считаются один раз.
3. При подсчете пунктуационных ошибок учитываются только следующие
ошибки:
1) наличие точки в заголовке (при наличии заголовка);
2) отсутствие точки или восклицательного знака в конце предложения;
3) отсутствие вопросительного знака в конце вопроса;
4) отсутствие запятой при перечислении или в бессоюзном сложносочиненном
предложении;
5) отсутствие запятой при вводных словах;
6) отсутствие (или ошибка в употреблении) необходимых знаков препинания
при прямой речи или цитировании.
4. Ошибки в словах-связках
(to my opinion
- вместо in my opinion)
учитываются по критерию «Организация текста».
5. Ошибки в местоимениях считаются ошибкой в референте и являются
логическими: (Every person wants to know his mistakes. People use computers. I do
not love him. - логические ошибки).

Now we begin.
Over the past centuries, the melodic and lyrical Russian language has charmed
quite a few people. They admired it and complained about its complexity and
challenges but nevertheless persisted in their attempt to learn and speak “the great
and mighty Russian language”.
One of these people was Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck spent three years in
Russia as Prussia’s envoy. He took his posting seriously, and learned the Russian
language on his own. Upon his arrival in St. Petersburg, he continued his studies, but
with a private teacher. Once a week, he postponed all his duties to dedicate at least
two hours to studying Russian grammar and syntax. At first, he complained that
dealing with the Russian parts of speech was harder than battling the French army.
However, in almost no time he was able to read Ivan Turgenev’s novel, ‘Home of the
Gentry’ in the original.
At the time, he hardly told anyone that he had mastered the language. It
became known only when Alexander II took note of Bismarck closely following his
conversation with Alexander Gorchakov, the foreign minister at the time. Bismarck
was forced to admit his language skills. Yet, the emperor didn’t get angry about the
diplomat’s reticence; instead, he complimented the envoy on the speed with which he
had learnt Russian.
Prosper Mérimée was another one who tried to learn Russian. The writer
started learning Russian after he had read Nikolay Karamzin’s
‘History of the
Russian State’. Mérimée was known to be a polyglot, fluent in Greek, Latin, English,
Italian, German and Spanish. As for the Russian language, it genuinely stunned him.
Bibliographer Sergey Sobolevsky introduced the French writer to Varvara, the former
maid of honor of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna. Varvara taught him Russian,
with their studies being so successful that Mérimée soon started to translate from the
new language. This is how the French public saw translations of Pushkin’s ‘Queen of

Spades’ and his poetry, as well as Nikolay Gogol’s comedy ‘The Government
Inspector’. Mérimée referred to Russian as
“the most amazing of all European
languages, as though specially meant for expressing the minutest shades of meaning”.
Lewis Carroll also endeavoured to master the Russian language. The well-
known mathematician and writer set out to Russia in the company of his friend,
theologian Henry Liddon. For Carroll, his trip to Russia appeared to be a real
challenge, which he successfully faced and solved. He was repeatedly daunted by
remarks that Russian was too difficult and contained multiple long, unpronounceable
words. However, he started mastering the language, step by step, with the help of a
dictionary and phrasebook. First, he put down unknown words, then tried to learn
whole phrases. Although at the end of the day he spoke Russian with a dictionary
close at hand, he did it rather skilfully: he could even haggle at local markets!

Steve: Thank goodness it’s Friday! This week's been dragging on forever.
Kelly: Tell me about it! So, what are you up to this weekend?
Steve: Oh, nothing special, really. This evening, I'm just going out for dinner with
my parents.
Kelly: Oh, that should be nice.
Steve: Yes, we're going to this little French place near where I live. The food's great
there, and then tomorrow I’ve got to get up really early - at least for me! -and do
some cooking, because I've got some people coming over in the afternoon. And I'll
have to give the place a really good clean as well. And, I'm not sure, but I think we'll
probably be going out after that - to see a film or something. We haven’t really
planned anything. What about yourself?
Kelly: Well, tonight I'm supposed to be going out with some people from my old
job, but I don't really feel like it any more. I'm feeling really tired.

Steve: So, you're just going to stay in, then?
Kelly: Yes, because tomorrow night I'm going to my friends Pete and Rachel's
party. It's on a boat.
Steve: Oh, that sounds great. Whereabouts?
Kelly: Down by the river. You know, in the docks.
Steve: Oh yes, I know where you mean. I went to a party there myself a while ago.
Kelly: Right. Is it OK down there?
Steve: Yes, it's great, but it's not all that big. There's not that much room on the boat.
Kelly: Mm, sounds cosy!
Steve: Oh, yes, you can get really close to people! Lots of sweaty bodies!
Kelly: I don’t think it's going to be that sort of party!
Steve: Well, you never know. lf you're lucky, it might become one! No, I'm only
joking, it's actually a great place for a party.
You have 1 minute to complete your answer.
