Listening comprehension
For items 1-10 listen to a man talking about a boy called Michael who crossed the
Atlantic in a sailing boat and decide whether the statements 1-10 are TRUE according
to the text you hear or FALSE or the information on the statement is NOT STATED in
the text. You will hear the text twice. You have 20 seconds to look through the
statements.

Now we begin
In 2007, Michael Perham, a fourteen-year-old boy from the south of England,
became the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic alone. Michael set off from
Gibraltar on the 5,600 kilometre voyage which took forty-seven days. It was a long
and, some may say, dangerous adventure, but Michael was determined to get there.
Michael started sailing when he was seven, and says the idea of an Atlantic
crossing had been floating around in his head for a few years. Then one day, his father,
Peter, who’s a keen sailor, decided that the time was right. Michael helped with the
design of a new 9-metre yacht which was built for them and to which Michael gave the
name the Cheeky Monkey.
They say that for a real sailor, crossing the Atlantic isn’t a big deal, but people
imagine that sharks and huge waves would be the greatest dangers. In fact, Michael’s
father sailed alongside his son in his own boat to make sure he was OK. They worked
in shifts throughout the night: an hour on, then an hour off, because one of them had to
be on watch, in case large ships came too near to them.
Are you wondering what Michael ate during his voyage? Well, he says he and his
father filled two supermarket trolleys with things like sausages, spaghetti and stews,
which could be easily heated in a pan. Everything had to be in tins, though, because
that type of food keeps fresher than stuff in packets or jars.
So what did Michael miss most? He says he sometimes missed human contact and
having a face-to-face conversation. He got used to his limited food supply but says
what he really longed for was hot toast. Knowing what teenagers are like, I’d been
expecting him to say burgers or crisps, but then Michael is no ordinary teenager!
When asked how he communicated with his father, Michael explains that it was
all done by radio, though for Michael nothing compared with the pleasure of following
his father’s progress through his binoculars. Michael also communicated with his
family at home by satellite phone. One day his father contacted Michael to tell him a
part of his own boat was broken, which really disappointed Michael because it might
mean that they would have to go slower. But, in the end, that wasn't necessary.

I asked Michael how he entertained himself on the boat. He told me he’d taken
his guitar with him but it had stayed in its case throughout the trip. He couldn’t play
because the boat was always rolling about! He loved to read and he also had an iPod
that his sister had lent him. This he plugged into portable speakers and it was on pretty
much all the time.
Was there anything that frightened Michael? He says the weather was a bit of a
worry at times, and once he got caught in a force-nine storm, but managed to handle
the boat OK. The one event that really shook him was when a flying fish jumped into
the boat and hit him on the shoulder. But mostly things were great, like sailing
alongside dolphins and seeing the bluest skies anyone could ever imagine.
Everybody is really proud of Michael’s achievements. And a remarkable thing
about the trip is that he also raised thousands of pounds for the charity known as
'Children in Need'. His school has been very supportive - the head teacher allowed
Michael to miss school, saying that a few weeks on the ocean would be an amazing
learning experience.
It’s quite likely that Michael's next challenge will be to sail non-stop around the
world. His father would do the trip in another boat, but it would be a very different
experience because they would be in 20-metre boats which travel much faster, so they
would never really be in sight of each other. Michael says next time he’ll remember to
pack some photos, to remember friends and family if he feels lonely, but he'll leave the
guitar at home!

Read about the places of interest they have visited and then answer five

Park Zaryadye is a park in Moscow, located next to Red Square. The park
was opened in 2017. Some of the most popular attractions there are a concert hall and
a Soaring (“flying”) bridge over the Moskva River.
St. Basil’s Cathedral is a church in Red Square of Moscow, built in 1561. St.
Basil’s Cathedral is famous for its beautiful and very colourful nine domes (roofs).
When it was built, it was the tallest building in Moscow.
The main building of Moscow State University is located on a high bank of
the Moskva River. It was built in 1953 and is 235 meters tall. It has 36 floors. Until
the 1990s it was the tallest building in Europe.
Gorky Park is located in Moscow, across the Moskva River from Park
Kultury Metro Station. It was opened in 1928 and has been popular ever since. The
most popular attractions are the biggest skating rink in Europe and a museum of
modern art “Garage”.
The Tretyakov Gallery is a museum of Russian art. The collection of Russian
paintings belonged to Pavel Tretyakov who gave it to the City of Moscow in 1892 as
a gift. The building of the gallery is very colourful and looks like a house from a fairy
tale.

There are several famous palaces in Moscow. Many of them are regularly visited
by tourists.

Read about the five most famous palaces in Moscow and answer the questions
that follow. Now you have 15 minutes to read the texts and answer these questions.
Petrovsky Palace is located on Leningradsky Prospect. Built in 1780 on the orders of
Catherine the Great in the so called “Russian Neogothic Style”, the Palace was used
by the Russian Monarchs as a place to stop at and rest on the way from St. Petersburg
to Moscow. Today, Petrovsky Palace and Park are within the Moscow city limits.
Part of the Petrovsky Park is occupied by the Dynamo Stadium.
Catherine’s Palace is located in the district of Lefortovo - which used to be the
German District of Moscow or ‘Nemetskaya Sloboda’, where foreigners lived. When
the palace was built in 1796, it was the biggest palace in Moscow. Catherine’s son
Pavel I didn’t like this palace, and after the death of his mother turned it into the
barracks for his soldiers. Since then, the palace has belonged to different military
schools.
The Grand Kremlin Palace is located in the Moscow Kremlin, facing the Moskva
River. The Palace was built in 1849 as the official residence of Russian Emperors in
Moscow. It is a tall building but has only two floors. It is now the residence of the
Russian President. Many official events are held there. Georgievsky Hall is the
largest hall of the Grand Palace. When there are no official events, the Palace is open
to tourists.
The Kremlin Palace of Congresses is the newest building in the Moscow Kremlin.
It was built in
1961 on the initiative of Nikita Khruschev to be used for the
congresses of the Communist Party. In addition to its main official purpose, the
Palace has always been used for concerts and theatrical productions. It served as the
second stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. The main and biggest New Year’s Party for
children - ‘Yolka’ - has also been held here for years.

Sheremetev Palace, or Ostankino Palace, was built in the 18th century by Count
Nikolai Sheremetev, one of the richest people of his time. Sheremetev loved arts and
built his summer residence at Ostankino as a palace of arts which included a theatre
and a library, as well as galleries of paintings and sculptures. The theatre was the
central and most important part of the palace. Today, Sheremetev

Peter Moon and the Chocolate Factory
Journalist Liz Campbell fulfils a childhood dream of visiting a real-life chocolate
factory.
From the outside, the building resembles a caramel square dusted with cocoa.
As I walk through the revolving doors, I am greeted with the pleasing aroma of smooth,
sweet, rich chocolate that permeates everything. Even in the reception area, where
Peter Moon's wife Leona is busy with Easter orders, I can't escape this potent scent.
If you want to appreciate this for yourself, then allow me to indulge you. Get a
chocolate bar and, against all your natural instincts, try to open the wrapper slowly.
Then take a moment to savour the tantalising smell of chocolate inside. Now picture
yourself actually inside, confined within the four walls of the wrapper that is shutting
in the aroma with you. If the mere thought of that sounds good to you, what would it
be like to breathe in the aroma of this fine chocolate every single day? I ask Leona that
very same question. "I'm so used to the smell. I've worked here for so long I don't even
notice it any more," Leona admits. To my mind, that is an absolute tragedy. But she
later confesses that she still eats a few pieces of chocolate every day.
I observe Leona as she expertly handles customers who are desperate to get their
orders in on time. The factory's chocolate has just been given the highest rating in a
recent consumer report and needless to say, the orders have been flooding in. The boom
in business could explain her high spirits, which I must admit is infectious, and I can't
help feeling excited about being let into this hidden world.
At that moment, Peter Moon enters from a door at the back, dressed in a white
hat and a heavy-duty rubber apron. After polite introductions, he immediately launches
into his favourite topic. "Did you know that chocolate comes from the bean of the
Theobroma Cacao tree, which means 'food of the gods'?" he asks. "The Aztecs
considered cacao to be man's inheritance from Quetzalcoatl, the god of the air. Cacao
seeds were made into a drink with the addition of maize and vanilla. The Spaniards
observed its use and carried back beans to Spain, where it rapidly became a drink for
the wealthy." I can tell this man lives and breathes what he does.
I follow Peter into the packing room, which is bursting with multicoloured
cellophane and ribbons that are waiting to decorate chocolate eggs arranged in lines. I
watch as staff work, carefully wrapping Easter treats. Over 60 staff are employed at the
factory and, from appearances, I don't doubt their commitment. "My team are
extremely focused. We are like a family here," Peter declares proudly. I couldn't agree
more. I immediately get the impression that this is no ordinary factory.
And then, as he and I enter the adjoining room, I try to pull myself together. I
make a great effort to control my excitement, reminding myself that the real purpose

of my visit is to gather information to write an article. A conveyor belt transports small
cubes of sweet centres towards a chocolate waterfall, with the promise of being
enveloped in a thick, luxurious layer of chocolate. Moon picks up a tray of half-finished
mini chocolate eggs. Each egg is ready to be filled and brushed over with more
chocolate to seal it. Coloured cocoa butter will then be painted on to it to give it a shiny
exterior. It is obvious that a significant amount of care and attention goes into making
Moon's chocolates, and each one is finished lovingly by hand.
"We use the freshest ingredients, which are free from artificial preservatives, and
so our products only have a shelf life of three weeks," explains Peter. By finding
ingredients from all around the world, Peter is responding to the growing trend of
chocolate connoisseurs who hold tasting evenings with friends. They enjoy trying to
name the origins of the cocoa bean that the chocolate is made from, like those who
appreciate fine wine. As I leave, I learn that Peter, like his wife, also takes the
opportunity to sample his work. "I think it's important to test the products on a regular
basis," he says smiling. And yes… if you are wondering, I did get to take some home!

DR: Well, it worries me a great deal that, even though we're richer and better

DR: Yes, it's incredible to see the difference from only twenty years ago. Now,
teenagers eat so much junk food and prefer sugary drinks with so many calories that
they're becoming fatter. They don't eat regular meals, they're always snacking on
crisps or chocolate ... schools should be doing more to advise them on a healthy way
of living. Why not have special cookery classes — for girls and boys —and also
teach them about nutrition?
Int: But don't growing kids need to eat a lot?

DR: Eat a lot of the right kind of food, otherwise kids will grow in the wrong way.
But you know, it's not just the diet that's the problem, but also the lack of exercise.
When I was young, we walked to school and played outside all day in the summer.
Now kids are couch potatoes, watching TV from morning to night or playing
mindless computer games.
Int: But life was much safer then. I wouldn’t want my children playing in the streets
with the terrible traffic we have and I want to know where they are ... keep an eye on
them.
DR: True — but by overprotecting and pampering our children, we are making them
less independent and less able to cope with life. We give them everything they want,
but we don't prepare them for real life. If only we could get schools to organise more
games lessons or after-school activity clubs ... The kids would be much fitter. I do
feel let down by schools these days — they have their priorities wrong.
Int: Earlier you mentioned people were more stressed these days. Why is that?
DR: There's so much pressure to succeed in life, both in careers and having
possessions like expensive cars. There's a lot of competition between people and this
results in stress or depression. What you can do is perhaps get some counselling, but
again, if you eat well and take regular exercise, you will feel fitter and able to cope
with difficulties more logically. All too often, doctors prescribe pills as a solution, but
I truly believe in looking at your lifestyle first and altering your routine, before
resorting to medicines.
Int: So ... I gather your approach to curing illnesses is to analyse your current way of
life and try to substitute a healthier diet and exercise routine.
DR: Exactly that. Some people say that they can't afford to follow a healthy diet, but
if you buy your fruit and vegetables from a market you'll find you're saving money.
And you don't have to go to a gym or join a fancy tennis club. Walk to work, or buy a
bicycle, or join a weekend hiking club. Not only will you get fitter and lose weight,
but you’ll make new friends. Don't look for excuses not to change your attitude to
health. And the healthier people become, the fewer patients I'll have to see in my
surgery. Then I’ll be able to concentrate on those who are really unwell.
Int: Dr Ramsdale, thank you for your advice I'm sure our listeners will be inspired to
throw away their frying pan and start to live more healthily from now on.

The Fussy family - Mr. and Mrs. Fussy, their daughter Candy and Mr. Fussy’s
mother Grandma Fussy - have been traveling in Russia for a week. Tomorrow is
their last day in Moscow and each of them has their own idea about what to do on
their last afternoon in the Russian capital. Imagine that you are their tour guide
and need to choose the right place to take them to. There are 3 places you are
thinking about that might be just right.
Task 1 (5 points)
Read the information about the 3 places that might be interesting for the Fussy
family to visit on their last afternoon in Moscow and answer the questions that
follow.
Now you have 15 minutes to read the texts and answer the questions.
The Arbat is one of the oldest and most famous streets in Moscow, especially
among tourists. It is one kilometer long and is located in the centre of Moscow, with
two metro stations - Smolenskaya and Arbatskaya - at its opposite ends which makes
it easily accessible. Trams used to run along the Arbat, but now it is a pedestrian
street full of souvenir shops that sell everything from matryoshka dolls to paintings.
There are many restaurants there that range from cheap street-food places to elegant
expensive restaurants. The famous Vakhtangov Drama Theatre is located in the very
middle of the Arbat. The Pushkin Museum is another place in the Arbat that attracts
many people.
Manezhnaya Square is located in the heart of Moscow next to the Kremlin
and Red Square and is within 7 minutes’ walk (500 m) from the Bolshoi and Maly
theatres, the Theatre of Operetta, as well as Zoological and Geological museums.
Underneath Manezhnaya Square there is an underground shopping mall “Okhotny
Ryad” with shops that sell clothes and souvenirs, and restaurants. During its
construction in 1993-1997, a lot of ancient artefacts dating back to pre-historic times
were found. This is why the Archeological Museum of Moscow was built in
Manezhnaya Square 7 m below the surface where among other things visitors can see
a 17th century bridge across the Neglinka river.
Tsaritsyno was founded in
1775 as the summer residence of Empress
Catherine the Great. Today, it is one of the most popular leisure places for
Muscovites and tourists. The place is located in the south of Moscow and consists of

more than 20 buildings in Moscow Baroque and Neo-Gothic styles many of which
house museum exhibitions. The territory of Tsaritsyno which includes a hilly park
with several ponds is over 100 hectares in area. In addition to excursions, classical
music concerts take place in Tsaritsyno. The souvenir shop located in the Grand
Palace sells books, ceramics, clothes and other souvenirs often related to the themes
of exhibitions.

Subject: The return of the bear
Dear Families,
As I shared with you earlier today, this afternoon a bear was spotted on our main
campus. Out of an abundance of caution, our campus was put on a brief lockdown.
Our campus security staff monitored the bear’s movements, and the lockdown was
released once the bear left the campgrounds.
However, our security team has continued to monitor the bear which later returned to
the campus and is now sitting in a tree on the far south side of our campus. The
Department of Natural Resources has been on site and has taken action to encourage
the bear to leave. After several hours of coaxing, this determined bear is still in the
tree, and monitored closely by security personnel.
Unfortunately, the bear’s current location is limiting access to some student cabins.
For the moment, this area of campus is completely closed and off-limits to students.
If the bear continues to linger in the area this evening, all students living in the
vicinity will be escorted safely to their cabins by campus safety personnel and
“locked in” for the night.
Our campus safety team, in coordination with the Department of Natural Resources,
continues to monitor the bear and has enacted protocols to ensure the safety of our
campus. We will keep our community updated as there are new developments.
