Engine Exhaust (Carbon monoxide)

WARNING

Do not drive your vehicle if you smell exhaust gas inside the vehicle
Engine exhaust gas is dangerous. This gas contains carbon monoxide
(CO), which is colorless, odorless, and poisonous. When inhaled, it can
cause loss of consciousness and death. If you smell exhaust gas inside the
vehicle, keep all windows fully open and contact your Scion dealer immedi-
ately.

Do not run the engine when inside an enclosed area
Running the engine inside an enclosed area, such as a garage, is danger-
ous. Exhaust gas, which contains poisonous carbon monoxide, could easily
enter the cabin. Loss of consciousness or even death could occur.

Open the windows or adjust the heating or cooling system to draw
fresh air when idling the engine:
Exhaust gas is dangerous. When the vehicle is stopped with the windows
closed and the engine running for a long time even in an open area,
exhaust gas, which contains poisonous carbon monoxide, could enter the
cabin. Loss of consciousness or even death could occur.

Clear snow from underneath and around your vehicle, particularly the
tail pipe, before starting the engine:
Running the engine when a vehicle is stopped in deep snow is dangerous.
The exhaust pipe could be blocked by the snow, allowing exhaust gas to
enter the cabin. Because exhaust gas contains poisonous carbon monox-
ide, it could cause loss of consciousness or even death to occupants in the
cabin.

2-3. Fuel and Emission

Fuel-Filler Lid and Cap

WARNING

When removing the fuel-filler cap, loosen the cap slightly and wait for
any hissing to stop, then remove it
Fuel spray is dangerous. Fuel can burn skin and eyes and cause illness if
ingested. Fuel spray is released when there is pressure in the fuel tank and
the fuel-filler cap is removed too quickly.

Before refueling, stop the engine, and always keep sparks and flames
away from the filler neck
Fuel vapor is dangerous. It could be ignited by sparks or flames causing
serious burns and injuries.

Additionally, use of the incorrect fuel-filler cap or not using a fuel-filler cap
may result in a fuel leak, which could result in serious burns or death in an
accident.

Do not continue refueling after the fuel pump nozzle shuts off automat-
ically
Continuing to add fuel after the fuel pump nozzle has shut off automatically
is dangerous because overfilling the fuel tank may cause fuel overflow or
leakage. Fuel overflow and leakage could damage the vehicle and if the fuel
ignites it could cause a fire and explosion resulting in serious injury or
death.

NOTICE

Always use only a genuine Scion fuel-filler cap or an approved equivalent,
available at your Scion dealer. The wrong cap can result in a serious mal-
function of the fuel and emission control systems. It may also cause the
check engine light in the combination meter to illuminate.

NOTICE

If the check fuel cap warning light illuminates, the fuel-filler cap may not be
properly installed. If the warning light illuminates, park your vehicle safely off
the right-of-way, remove the fuel-filler cap and reinstall it correctly. After the
cap has been correctly installed, the fuel cap warning light may continue to
illuminate until a number of driving cycles have been completed. A drive
cycle consists of starting the engine (after four or more hours with the
engine off) and driving the vehicle on city and highway roads.

Continuing to drive with the check fuel cap warning light illuminated could
cause the check engine light to illuminate as well.

2-6. Windows

Power Windows

The ignition must be switched ON for the power windows to operate.

A power window may no longer open/close if you continue to press the switch
after fully opening/closing the power window. If the power window does not
open/close, wait a moment and then operate the switch again.

Normal opening/closing

Close

To close the window to the
desired position, lightly pull up
the switch.

Open

To open the window to the
desired position, lightly hold
down the switch.

WARNING

Make sure the opening is clear before closing a window
Closing a power window is dangerous. A person’s hands, head, or even
neck could be caught by the window and result in serious injury or even
death. This warning applies especially to children.

Never allow children to play with power window switches
Power window switches that are not locked with the power window lock
switch would allow children to operate power windows unintentionally,
which could result in serious injury if a child’s hands, head or neck becomes
caught by the window.

NOTICE

To prevent burning out the fuse and damaging the power window system,
do not open or close more than three windows at once.

direction and then release it.
● Power window system initialization procedure

If the battery was disconnected during vehicle maintenance, or
for other reasons (such as a switch continues to be operated
after the window is fully open/closed), the window will not fully
open and close automatically.

The power window auto function will only resume on a power
window that has been reset.

Switch the ignition ON.

Make sure that the power window lock switch located on the
driver’s door is not depressed.

Press the switch and fully open the window.

Pull up the switch to fully close the window and continue hold-
ing the switch for about 2 seconds after the window fully
closed.

Jam-safe window

Depending on driving conditions, a closing power window could stop and
start opening when the window feels a shock that is similar to something
blocking it.
In the event the jam-safe function activates and the power window cannot
be closed automatically, pull and hold the switch and the window will close.

The jam-safe window function does not operate until the system has been
reset.

Engine-off power window operation
For engine-off operation of the power window, the switch must be held up
firmly throughout window closure because the auto-closing function will be
inoperable.

Close

To close the window to the desired
position, pull up the switch.

Open

To open the window to the desired
position, hold down the switch.

WARNING

Make sure nothing blocks the window just before it reaches the fully
closed position or while holding up the power window switch
Blocking the power window just before it reaches the fully closed position or
while holding up the power window switch is dangerous.

In this case, the jam-safe function cannot prevent the window from closing
all the way. If fingers are caught, serious injuries could occur.

Modification and Add-On Equipment

Scion cannot guarantee the immobilizer and the theft deterrent
systems’ operation if the system has been modified or if any
add-on equipment has been installed.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the vehicle, do not modify the system or install any add-
on equipment to the immobilizer and the theft deterrent systems or the vehi-
cle.

Immobilizer System

If someone attempts to start the engine with an unrecognized key, the
engine will not start, thereby helping to prevent vehicle theft.

If you have a problem with the immobilizer system or the key, consult
your Scion dealer.

The keys carry a unique electronic code. For this reason, and to assure your
safety, obtaining a replacement key requires some waiting time. They are
only available through your Scion dealer.

Always keep a spare key in case one is lost. If a key is lost, consult your
Scion dealer as soon as possible.

If you lose a key, your Scion dealer will reset the electronic codes of your
remaining keys and immobilizer system. Bring all the remaining keys to your
Scion dealer to reset.
Starting the vehicle with a key that has not been reset is not possible.

The immobilizer system allows the engine to start only with a
key the system recognizes.

NOTICE

Radio equipment like this is governed by laws in the United States.
Changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible
for compliance could void the user’s authority to operate the equipment.

To avoid damage to the key, do not:

• Drop the key.
• Get the key wet.
• Expose the key to any kind of magnetic field.
• Expose the key to high temperatures on places such as the dashboard

or hood, under direct sunlight.

If the engine does not start with the correct key, and the security indicator
light keeps illuminating or flashing, the system may have a malfunction.
Consult your Scion dealer.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

122

iA_OM_OM99M17z_(U)

2-7. Security System

Arming

The system is armed when the
ignition is switched from ON to
off.

The security indicator light in
the combination meter flashes
every 2 seconds until the sys-
tem is disarmed.

Disarming

The system is disarmed when the ignition is switched ON with the
correct programmed key. The security indicator light illuminates for
about 3 seconds and then turns off. If the engine does not start with
the correct key, and the security indicator light remains illuminated
or flashing, try the following:

Make sure the key is within the operational range for signal trans-
mission. Switch the ignition off, and then restart the engine. If the
engine does not start after 3 or more tries, contact your Scion
dealer.

The engine may not start and security indicator light may illuminate or flash
if the key is placed in an area where it is difficult for the system to detect the
signal, such as on the dashboard or in the glove compartment. Move the
key to a location within the signal range, switch the ignition off, and then
restart the engine.

Signals from a TV or radio station, or from a transceiver or mobile telephone
could interfere with your immobilizer system. If you are using the proper key
and the engine fails to start, check the security indicator light.

If the security indicator light flashes continuously while you are driving, do
not shut off the engine. Go to your Scion dealer and have it checked. If the
engine is shut off while the indicator light is flashing, you will not be able to
restart it.

Because the electronic codes are reset when the immobilizer system is
repaired, the keys are needed. Make sure to bring all the keys to your Scion
dealer so that they can be programmed.

Theft Deterrent System

The system will not function unless it’s properly armed. So when you
leave the vehicle, follow the arming procedure correctly.

System triggering conditions

The horn sounds intermittently and the hazard warning lights flash
for about 30 seconds when the system is triggered by any one of
the following:

• Unlocking a door with the key, door lock switch, or an inside

door-lock knob.

• Forcing open a door, the hood or the trunk lid.
• Opening the hood by operating the hood release handle.
• Switching the ignition ON without using the push button start.

If the system is triggered again, the lights and horn will activate until
the driver’s door or the trunk lid is unlocked with the smart key.

The trunk lid does not open while the theft deterrent system is operating.

If the battery goes dead while the theft deterrent system is armed, the horn
will activate and the hazard warning lights will flash when the battery is
charged or replaced.

: If equipped

If the theft deterrent system detects an inappropriate entry into
the vehicle, which could result in the vehicle or its contents
being stolen, the alarm alerts the surrounding area of an abnor-
mality by sounding the horn and flashing the hazard warning
lights.

2-7. Security System

Close the windows securely.

Switch the ignition OFF.

Make sure the hood, the doors, and the trunk lid are closed.

Press the lock button on the smart key or lock the driver’s door from
the outside with the auxiliary key.

The hazard warning lights will flash once.

The following method will also arm the theft deterrent system:
Press the door-lock switch “

” while any door is open and then

close all of the doors.

The security indicator light in
the instrument panel flashes
twice per second for 20 sec-
onds.

After 20 seconds, the system is fully armed.

The theft deterrent system can also be armed by activating the auto relock
function with all the doors, the trunk lid and the hood closed. Refer to Smart
Key on P. 89.

The system will disarm if one of the following operations takes place within
20 seconds after pressing the lock button:

• Unlocking any door.
• Opening any door or the trunk lid.
• Opening the hood.
• Switching the ignition ON.
To rearm the system, do the arming procedure again.

When the doors are locked by pressing the lock button on the smart key or
using the auxiliary key while the theft deterrent system is armed, the hazard
warning lights will flash once to indicate that the system is armed.
