1 Introduction
1.1 Overview
The OptiX OSN 3500 is a flexible, SDH add/drop multiplexer that offers the services
aggregation and high-bandwidth transport of voice and data traffic on a single
platform. The OptiX OSN 3500 provides efficient service management and rapid
upgrade and capacity expansion without disrupting service.
1-1
Introduction
Figure 1-1 OptiX OSN 3500
The OptiX OSN 3500 is endowed with all features for evolving into the next
generation NG-SDH platform. That is, with platform constructed by high-rate
backplane bus, OptiX OSN 3500 can be smoothly developed into an intelligent optical
network product. Additionally, as a member of Huawei optical network product family,
OptiX OSN 3500 features powerful higher-order and lower-order cross-connect
capability and abundant service interfaces, and its rate can be smoothly upgraded
from 2.5G to 10G. When used together with OptiX OSN 2500 (STM-1/4/16 MSTP),
the software and hardware of all service board, including SDH/PDH/Ethernet service
board, boards can be exchanged in use, minimizing the cost of investment and
maintenance for the customer.
The OptiX OSN 3500 product is chiefly used at the convergence layer and backbone
layer of the MAN. The powerful cross-connect matrix endows the OptiX OSN 3500
with flexible networking and service grooming capability of a Multi Add/Drop
Multiplexer (MADM). With the Layer 2 (L2) Ethernet switching and L2 Virtual Private
Network (VPN) technologies, interconnection of dedicated lines as well as reliable
Internet Protocol (IP) service transmission and high bandwidth utility can be fulfilled.
Also, it can save the cost of networking investment for operators by constructing a

network with equipments such as OptiX OSN 9500, OptiX 10G, OptiX OSN 2500 and
OptiX Metro 1000/500, as shown in Figure 1-2.

Introduction
1.2 Features
1.2.1 Flexible Configuration into STM-16 or
STM-64 System
The OptiX OSN 3500 can be configured as either STM-16 system at convergence
layer or the STM-64 System at backbone layer. And the STM-16 system can be
smoothly upgraded to an STM-64 one. Figure 1-3 and Figure 1-4 respectively shows
the access capacity of OptiX OSN 3500 when it is configured as STM-16 and STM-64
system.
