Interviewer: I don't think I could have coped with that!
Charles: I’m not sure I did. But if you did something wrong, you were in trouble and
we often spent eight hours a day trying to learn what to do!
Interviewer: So how did you feel when you first heard that you were actually going
to the moon?
Charles: I suppose you're expecting me to say 'exhilarated'. But I knew there were
lots of ‘ifs' - it would happen if they didn't cancel the program, if I didn't get sick
and so on. So I stopped doing all the dangerous sports I was involved in.
Interviewer: So you knew you had one chance and if you blew it, you wouldn't get
another?
Charles: That just about sums it up!
Interviewer: And when you eventually got there, what impact did it have on you?
Landing on the moon, I mean!
Charles: When we saw the moon for the first time from about 1500 meters, we
recognized the landmarks but, as we got closer, we saw that the spot we were going
to land on was very rough - big rocks and craters -and we panicked a bit. And the
more we tried to maneuver and the closer we got, the more moon dust we blew out.
Interviewer: But you landed safely?
Charles: Eventually, yes. We were six hours late. So when we touched down, we
erupted in enthusiasm. We shook hands and hugged each other.
Interviewer: Not an easy feat in spacesuits.
Charles: [laughs] No, indeed. But after that . . . we had to rest for a certain period . . .
we got outside for the very first time.
Interviewer: You must have been terrified.
Charles: We had no sense of fear about stepping off the ladder onto the moon. We
just jumped off and started bouncing around like lambs in a field in springtime.
Interviewer: And when you saw the lunar landscape, did it live up to expectations?
Charles: What struck me most, apart from its awesome attraction, was its desolation.
The sky was jet black. You felt as if you could reach out and touch it. There were no
stars and the sun was shining all the time.
Interviewer: And what went through your mind at that moment?
Charles: The fact that it was so untouched. The fact that nobody had ever been to
that particular spot before. It was simply breathtaking.
Interviewer: And do you have a favorite memory of the mission?
Charles: Definitely. It was the thing that we did during the last moonwalk. We were
about 6 kilometers or so from the base, and on the edge of a big crater, 100 meters
deep. We had to be careful as we walked along the ridge because one slip would have
been dangerous. Suddenly we saw this huge rock. It was a long way off, and there are
no people or cars to judge distances or give you any sense of scale.
Interviewer: But you managed to get down to it?
Charles: Eventually. It was enormous. The biggest rock anybody had ever touched
on the moon. I had a hammer and I hit a chunk of it - and it came off in my hand -
a piece the size of a small melon.

1. The Minin and Pozharsky monument in Moscow stands proudly on Red Square. It
is about 9 meters tall, including its pedestal. The monument shows Prince Dmitry
Pozharsky and Kuzma Minin, who led the Russian people to free Moscow from foreign
invaders in 1612. The statue was made by sculptor Ivan Martos and opened in 1818. It is
a symbol of Russian courage and unity.
2. The Worker and Kolkhoz Woman monument stands near VDNKh in the north of
Moscow. The 25-meter statue stands on a 35-meter pedestal. It is 60 meters high in total.
The monument was created by sculptor Vera Mukhina in 1937. It shows a man with a
hammer and a woman with a sickle, raised high in their hands. The monument became
the symbol of Mosfilm - the Soviet film studio.
3. The monument to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson stands near the British
Embassy by the Moskva River. It shows the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his
friend Dr. Watson. The life-size statue was made by sculptor Andrey Orlov and was
opened in 2007. The monument is a symbol of friendship and clever thinking. Many
people like to take selfies with their favourite book characters.

Mustangs
The image of horses running freely across the plains is a popular symbol of the
American West. However, mustangs are not native to the United States. When Spanish
armies came to the New World in the sixteenth century, they brought horses with them.
Horses had been extinct in the Americas for about 12,000 years.
The wild horses that now live in the western part of the United States are called
mustangs. The word comes from the Spanish word mesteño, meaning wild or stray. The
mustangs’ ancestors were Spanish horses that had escaped from Spanish soldiers.
(1) Over many years, the mustang population in the western United States grew.
(2) By the end of the nineteenth century, about two million mustangs roamed the
countryside. (3) Farmers and ranchers complained that the mustangs destroyed their
crops and ate food meant for farm animals. (4) Some mustangs were used in movies
about the Wild West. (5) Although some people tried to protect wild horses as early as
1925, the mustang population kept shrinking because many farmers killed them or
removed them from the western plains and prairies. (6) By 1970, fewer than 17,000
mustangs remained in the USA.
In 1971, the US Congress passed a law to protect these wild horses. Today, the
government manages areas with too many mustangs. Some of the horses are even
offered for adoption. About 37,000 mustangs currently live in the United States.

Mustangs
The image of horses running freely across the plains is a popular symbol of the
American West. However, mustangs are not native to the United States. When Spanish
armies came to the New World in the sixteenth century, they brought horses with them.
Horses had been extinct in the Americas for about 12,000 years.
The wild horses that now live in the western part of the United States are called
mustangs. The word comes from the Spanish word mesteño, meaning wild or stray. The
mustangs’ ancestors were Spanish horses that had escaped from Spanish soldiers.
(1) Over many years, the mustang population in the western United States grew.
(2) By the end of the nineteenth century, about two million mustangs roamed the
countryside. (3) Farmers and ranchers complained that the mustangs destroyed their
crops and ate food meant for farm animals. (4) Some mustangs were used in movies
about the Wild West. (5) Although some people tried to protect wild horses as early as
1925, the mustang population kept shrinking because many farmers killed them or
removed them from the western plains and prairies. (6) By 1970, fewer than 17,000
mustangs remained in the USA.
In 1971, the US Congress passed a law to protect these wild horses. Today, the
government manages areas with too many mustangs. Some of the horses are even
offered for adoption. About 37,000 mustangs currently live in the United States.

Horse, soldiers hidden inside that wooden horse? That wasn’t real - was it?
Father: Well, Laura, nobody knows if the Trojan War or the horse were real. But the
city itself is a different story. For two thousand years people thought the city was also
a legend and wasn’t real. But… in the 19th century, there was this German boy, and

his name was Heinrich Schliemann. When he was 7 years old, he decided that he
would find the real ancient city of Troy. He loved the legend of Troy so much that he
learnt the Greek language and when he grew up and made enough money, he went to
Turkey and found it!
Frank: Wow! Did he become an archaeologist?
Father: That’s the thing! Officially, he didn’t! He couldn’t afford to go to university
when he was young. But he kept reading about Troy. And when the right time came,
he organized an archaeological expedition and found it - and proved to the whole
world two things - that the legendary city of Troy really existed, but most
importantly, that a childhood dream can come true.
Laura: That’s so cool! Let’s go see what he found!

Read an article about the Carnegie Hall in New York and answer questions 1-8

One of the most famous concert halls in America is the Carnegie Hall in New York.
Initially, it was called simply the 'Music Hall', but three years after its opening it was
renamed in honour of Andrew Carnegie, the man who had provided much of the finance
for its building.
The Hall officially opened on May 5, 1891. Since then, the Hall has played host to the
giants of classical music, as well as those of jazz, pop, folk and rock music, and has also
been used for political rallies, religious services and lectures.
One of the most dramatic lectures given in the Hall took place during its first year. This
began simply as a talk accompanied by slides of paintings of sunsets and landscapes,
which was what the audience had been expecting. However, as the lecture progressed,
the effects became more dramatic, with thunder, rolling clouds and steam billowing over
the audience's head while mechanical volcanoes exploded on stage - all to the
amazement and delight of the audience.
In 1927 the violinist Yehudi Menuhin made his appearance at the Carnegie Hall for the
first time - he was aged ten. In the afternoon before the performance, he was wandering
around the Hall instead of practising and was fascinated by an axe which he saw on the
wall. The axe was for use in a fire but the boy, not knowing this, asked a security guard
what it was for. The guard made an impression with his reply: "That's for chopping the
heads off soloists who don't play well enough. Quite a few have already been chopped
off.” Yehudi went rushing back to practise.
On one occasion another famous violinist and a pianist were giving a performance
together when the violinist got lost in the music. He anxiously looked to the pianist for
help and whispered "Where are we?" He received the less than helpful reply "In the
Carnegie Hall".
Rock and roll made its first appearance at the Carnegie Hall in 1955 with Bill Haley and
his Comets. In 1964 the British invasion arrived when the Beatles played their first
concert here. On the day of the concert, cars came to a halt all over the city and the
crowds surrounding the building were enormous. Fortunately, in all the chaos nobody
was seriously injured and the Hall escaped with only minor damage.
ln the 1950s the building was threatened with demolition but a vigorous campaign to
save it was led by the conductor, Isaac Stern. ln 1960 the Hall was purchased by the City
of New York and a few years later it was named a national landmark. Over the years the

most famous musicians, singers and entertainers in the world have appeared there - no

Many authors don’t put their own names on their work. They use pen names, also called

One of the most famous concert halls in America is the Carnegie Hall in New York.
Initially, it was called simply the 'Music Hall', but three years after its opening it was
renamed in honour of Andrew Carnegie, the man who had provided much of the finance
for its building.
The Hall officially opened on May 5, 1891. Since then, the Hall has played host to the
giants of classical music, as well as those of jazz, pop, folk and rock music, and has also
been used for political rallies, religious services and lectures.
One of the most dramatic lectures given in the Hall took place during its first year. This
began simply as a talk accompanied by slides of paintings of sunsets and landscapes,
which was what the audience had been expecting. However, as the lecture progressed,
the effects became more dramatic, with thunder, rolling clouds and steam billowing over
the audience's head while mechanical volcanoes exploded on stage - all to the
amazement and delight of the audience.
In 1927 the violinist Yehudi Menuhin made his appearance at the Carnegie Hall for the
first time - he was aged ten. In the afternoon before the performance, he was wandering
around the Hall instead of practising and was fascinated by an axe which he saw on the
wall. The axe was for use in a fire but the boy, not knowing this, asked a security guard
what it was for. The guard made an impression with his reply: "That's for chopping the
heads off soloists who don't play well enough. Quite a few have already been chopped
off.” Yehudi went rushing back to practise.
On one occasion another famous violinist and a pianist were giving a performance
together when the violinist got lost in the music. He anxiously looked to the pianist for
help and whispered "Where are we?" He received the less than helpful reply "In the
Carnegie Hall".
Rock and roll made its first appearance at the Carnegie Hall in 1955 with Bill Haley and
his Comets. In 1964 the British invasion arrived when the Beatles played their first
concert here. On the day of the concert, cars came to a halt all over the city and the
crowds surrounding the building were enormous. Fortunately, in all the chaos nobody
was seriously injured and the Hall escaped with only minor damage.
ln the 1950s the building was threatened with demolition but a vigorous campaign to
save it was led by the conductor, Isaac Stern. ln 1960 the Hall was purchased by the City
of New York and a few years later it was named a national landmark. Over the years the

most famous musicians, singers and entertainers in the world have appeared there - no

Father: No, it is not the Egyptian room, Frank. It is the room of the Gold of Troy. It
is the story of how a boy’s childhood dream came true.
Laura: Wait a second, Daddy. When you say the Gold of Troy, you mean the legend,
right? The myth of the ancient Greek city of Troy? The Trojan War, the Trojan
Horse, soldiers hidden inside that wooden horse? That wasn’t real - was it?

Father: Well, Laura, nobody knows if the Trojan War or the horse were real. But the
city itself is a different story. For two thousand years people thought the city was also
a legend and wasn’t real. But… in the 19th century, there was this German boy, and
his name was Heinrich Schliemann. When he was 7 years old, he decided that he
would find the real ancient city of Troy. He loved the legend of Troy so much that he
learnt the Greek language and when he grew up and made enough money, he went to
Turkey and found it!
Frank: Wow! Did he become an archaeologist?
Father: That’s the thing! Officially, he didn’t! He couldn’t afford to go to university
when he was young. But he kept reading about Troy. And when the right time came,
he organized an archaeological expedition and found it - and proved to the whole
world two things - that the legendary city of Troy really existed, but most
importantly, that a childhood dream can come true.
Laura: That’s so cool! Let’s go see what he found!
Frank: And after that - the Egyptian room!
Father: Deal!
