Read the text below. Then do the tasks that follow.
On the Move
A. Dan and Sammy cannot believe that they have to move away from Florida. Florida
is so awesome! They can play outside all day long - every day. It is almost always
warm and sunny, and all of their friends live there. What will they do without
Brendan, Bailey, John, Alexis, and Brian? They will never have such great friends
again. Never!
B. However, Dan and Sammy are very excited for their dad. He has a great new job.
The only problem is that the job is in New Hampshire. Sammy was not even sure
where this state was located. After learning that it is way up north near Boston,
Massachusetts, and Quebec, Canada, both boys did get a little excited about playing
in the snow. Sammy has always wanted to learn to ski, and Dan thinks playing ice
hockey sounds like fun.
C. Dan and Sammy also like the location of New Hampshire. It is between Maine and
Vermont. Neither of the boys has ever visited this part of the country, so they are now
looking forward to exploring a new area. If only their friends could come with them!
Their parents have promised that they can visit their old friends over spring break and
even go to Disney World. The boys think that moving to New Hampshire will not be
so bad after all.

Robert: Hi Wendy! I’m home!
Wendy: Hi Robert!
Robert: Hey, do you want to come help me do my homework?
Wendy: Why?
Robert: Because it’s fun?
Wendy: Since when is it fun to help your elder brother do his homework, Robert?
Robert: Since I started learning Russian at school?
Wendy: Oh! Did you have your first lesson today?
Robert: I sure did!
Wendy: What have you learnt?
Robert: Not much yet, but the teacher told us to make a presentation about some place
in Moscow!
Wendy: In Russian?
Robert: No! In English, of course! Do you want to help me choose the place on Google
Earth?
Wendy: Sure! I can tell you right away! Make it about Red Square or the Kremlin.
Robert: No. I want something that isn’t the best known place. Something cool but not
very well-known.
Wendy: OK. Let’s look at the map then. Show us the street view! What is this? It looks
like a huge church with a huge steeple on a big hill!
Robert: Ummm. I don’t think it’s a church. Russian churches don’t look like this. Let’s
see. Wow! It’s Moscow State University. It does look a little like a gigantic version of
our church, though, doesn’t it? It says here, there are 6 more buildings in Moscow that
look like that!
Wendy: Interesting… What do Russian churches look like then?
Robert: Oh, I’ll show you. They all have onion-domes. Here’s the most famous one,
which is actually right on Red Square. It’s called St. Basil’s Cathedral.
Wendy: This is a church?
Robert: Yes!
Wendy: It looks like a gingerbread house! Or a building from a fairy tale! Or a fantasy
book! It’s very pretty!
Robert: I know! I wonder what it’s like inside!

Louise wrote the letter below to her town newspaper. Read the letter and do the tasks

To the Editor:
(1) I am a fifth-grade student at East Bakerley Middle School. (2) I own a three-year-old
Labrador named Susie, and often exercise her on Upton’s Field. (3) I was very upset to
read your editorial about dogs and that well-loved piece of land (“Let’s Keep Roaming
Dogs Out of Upton’s Field,” April 8).
(4) You state that dogs have become a pest on Upton’s Field. (5) You also state that
Upton’s Field is a park, and that people should stick to the rules. (6) You seem to think
that one of those rules is that dogs should be kept on a leash.
(7) I take good care of Susie. (8) She loves Upton’s Field and does not bother anyone.
(9) Maybe some dogs are pests, like you say. (10) Must all dogs and dog-owners suffer
because a few people can’t keep control of their pets?
(11) Dogs have been running free on Upton’s Field for nearly 100 years. (12) It is
traditional. (13) In 1912, a farmer named Elias Upton gave the land to the people of our
town. (14) In his will, he stated that the citizens of Bakerley should always be allowed to
graze animals on it and use it for recreation. (15) Mr. Upton was ninety-eight when he

dogs on leashes, and lots of people see letting their dogs go for a run as good recreation.

that the supermarket is selling big tins of paint really cheaply, so I could start straight
away.
Zara: Hmm. I’m not sure about that. It’s probably best to ask Mum and Dad what
they think first.
Leon: Oh, I don’t think they’ll mind.
Zara: Or perhaps you could get some new furniture. If you do, I’d suggest looking
for things that don’t need so much space. Some of those you have now, like that desk,
are too big for the room really.
Leon: No, I don’t agree with you about that. I need quite a big desktop for my
computer and all the things that go with it, as well as something to write on. There’s
all that homework I have to do.
Zara: Yes, I suppose so. But there are other things you could do.

Read an extract from a novel and answer questions.
'How is the Dictionary getting on?' said Winston, raising his voice to overcome
the noise.
'Slowly,' said Syme. 'I'm on the adjectives. It's fascinating.'
He had brightened up immediately at the mention of Newspeak. He pushed his
bowl aside, took up his hunk of bread in one delicate hand and his cheese in the other,
and leaned across the table so as to be able to speak without shouting.
'The Eleventh Edition is the definitive edition,' he said. 'We're getting the
language into its final shape - the shape it's going to have when nobody speaks
anything else. When we've finished with it, people like you will have to learn it all
over again. You think, I dare say, that our chief job is inventing new words. But not a
bit of it! We're destroying words - scores of them, hundreds of them, every day.
We're cutting the language down to the bone. The Eleventh Edition won't contain a
single word that will become obsolete before the year 2050.'
He bit hungrily into his bread and swallowed a couple of mouthfuls, then
continued speaking, with a sort of pedant's passion. His thin dark face had become
animated, his eyes had lost their mocking expression and grown almost dreamy.
'It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is
in the verbs and adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns that can be got rid of as
well. It isn't only the synonyms; there are also the antonyms. After all, what
justification is there for a word which is simply the opposite of some other word? A
word contains its opposite in itself. Take "good", for instance. If you have a word like
"good", what need is there for a word like "bad"? "Ungood" will do just as well -
better, because it's an exact opposite, which the other is not. Or again, if you want a
stronger version of "good", what sense is there in having a whole string of vague
useless words like "excellent" and "splendid" and all the rest of them? "Plusgood"
covers the meaning, or "doubleplusgood" if you want something stronger still. Of
course we use those forms already. But in the final version of Newspeak there'll be
nothing else. In the end the whole notion of goodness and badness will be covered by
only six words - in reality, only one word. Don't you see the beauty of that, Winston?
It was B.B.'s idea originally, of course,' he added as an afterthought.
A sort of vapid eagerness flitted across Winston's face at the mention of Big
Brother. Nevertheless Syme immediately detected a certain lack of enthusiasm.
'You haven't1 a real appreciation of Newspeak, Winston,' he said almost sadly.
'Even when you write it you're still thinking in Oldspeak. I've read some of those
pieces that you write in "The Times" occasionally. They're good enough, but they're

translations. In your heart you'd prefer to stick to Oldspeak, with all its vagueness and
its useless shades of meaning. You don't grasp the beauty of the destruction of words.
Do you know that Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets
smaller every year?'
Winston did know that, of course. He smiled, sympathetically he hoped,
not trusting himself to speak. Syme bit off another fragment of the dark-
coloured bread, chewed it briefly, and went on:
'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of
thought? In the end we shall make thought crime literally impossible because there
will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will
be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its
subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten. Already, in the Eleventh Edition,
we're not far from that point. But the process will still be continuing long after you
and I are dead. Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness
always a little smaller. Even now, of course, there's no reason or excuse for
committing thought- crime. It's merely a question of self-discipline, reality- control.
But in the end there won't be any need even for that. The Revolution will be complete
when the language is perfect. Newspeak is Ingsoc and Ingsoc is Newspeak,' he added
with a sort of mystical satisfaction. 'Has it ever occurred to you, Winston, that by the
year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could
understand such a conversation as we are having now?'

It might seem that a creative soul can’t remain unmoved by the beauty of
Russian nature. And yet, the earliest landscapes had created by Russian artists
were views of Italy.

academic training in Western Europe and, on their return to Russia, proceeded
to paint such portraits and genre scenes as were in demand at the time.

Read an extract from a novel and answer questions.
'How is the Dictionary getting on?' said Winston, raising his voice to overcome
the noise.
'Slowly,' said Syme. 'I'm on the adjectives. It's fascinating.'
He had brightened up immediately at the mention of Newspeak. He pushed his
bowl aside, took up his hunk of bread in one delicate hand and his cheese in the other,
and leaned across the table so as to be able to speak without shouting.
'The Eleventh Edition is the definitive edition,' he said. 'We're getting the
language into its final shape - the shape it's going to have when nobody speaks
anything else. When we've finished with it, people like you will have to learn it all
over again. You think, I dare say, that our chief job is inventing new words. But not a
bit of it! We're destroying words - scores of them, hundreds of them, every day.
We're cutting the language down to the bone. The Eleventh Edition won't contain a
single word that will become obsolete before the year 2050.'
He bit hungrily into his bread and swallowed a couple of mouthfuls, then
continued speaking, with a sort of pedant's passion. His thin dark face had become
animated, his eyes had lost their mocking expression and grown almost dreamy.
'It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is
in the verbs and adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns that can be got rid of as
well. It isn't only the synonyms; there are also the antonyms. After all, what
justification is there for a word which is simply the opposite of some other word? A
word contains its opposite in itself. Take "good", for instance. If you have a word like
"good", what need is there for a word like "bad"? "Ungood" will do just as well -
better, because it's an exact opposite, which the other is not. Or again, if you want a
stronger version of "good", what sense is there in having a whole string of vague
useless words like "excellent" and "splendid" and all the rest of them? "Plusgood"
covers the meaning, or "doubleplusgood" if you want something stronger still. Of
course we use those forms already. But in the final version of Newspeak there'll be
nothing else. In the end the whole notion of goodness and badness will be covered by
only six words - in reality, only one word. Don't you see the beauty of that, Winston?
It was B.B.'s idea originally, of course,' he added as an afterthought.
A sort of vapid eagerness flitted across Winston's face at the mention of Big
Brother. Nevertheless Syme immediately detected a certain lack of enthusiasm.
'You haven't1 a real appreciation of Newspeak, Winston,' he said almost sadly.
'Even when you write it you're still thinking in Oldspeak. I've read some of those
pieces that you write in "The Times" occasionally. They're good enough, but they're

translations. In your heart you'd prefer to stick to Oldspeak, with all its vagueness and
its useless shades of meaning. You don't grasp the beauty of the destruction of words.
Do you know that Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets
smaller every year?'
Winston did know that, of course. He smiled, sympathetically he hoped,
not trusting himself to speak. Syme bit off another fragment of the dark-
coloured bread, chewed it briefly, and went on:
'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of
thought? In the end we shall make thought crime literally impossible because there
will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will
be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its
subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten. Already, in the Eleventh Edition,
we're not far from that point. But the process will still be continuing long after you
and I are dead. Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness
always a little smaller. Even now, of course, there's no reason or excuse for
committing thought- crime. It's merely a question of self-discipline, reality- control.
But in the end there won't be any need even for that. The Revolution will be complete
when the language is perfect. Newspeak is Ingsoc and Ingsoc is Newspeak,' he added
with a sort of mystical satisfaction. 'Has it ever occurred to you, Winston, that by the
year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could
understand such a conversation as we are having now?'

Interviewer: My guest today is Charles Duke, one of the few people to have walked
on the moon as part of an Apollo mission. Charles, welcome to the studio. Have you
always been hooked on space travel?
Charles: Quite frankly, as a kid, it'd never entered my head. There wasn't even a
space program when I was young . . . so there weren't any astronauts.
Interviewer: What about science fiction films at the cinema?
Charles: I'd seen them, of course I used to wonder what space travel might be like -
but it was never what you might describe as a fascination - if you follow me.
Interviewer: So, how did it all come about?
Charles: It was at the Naval Academy. . .
Interviewer: Not in the Air Force?
Charles: No, but I was a navy pilot. I had fallen in love with planes and nothing else
would do. And that gave me the opportunity to start - to get selected for the
astronaut program.
Interviewer: Presumably by then they were talking about putting rockets into space?
Charles: Absolutely.
Interviewer: And how did you find the training?
Charles: I suppose the lunar surface training in the spacesuit was physically
demanding in a way.
Interviewer: Quite uncomfortable, I imagine.
Charles: It's not what you might expect. Once the spacesuits get inflated, it gets very
rigid. You had to fight to bend your arms and move your fingers inside the gloves.
Interviewer: And how long did you spend inside it?
Charles: Around four to five hours. But actually, the most challenging part was
worrying about how to handle the simulator because we needed to know how to land
and then take off on the moon.
