Task 1
For items 7-16, read the passage below and choose the option which best fits according
to the text.
Learning about the science of shyness
David Robson talks about his own experience of getting to grips with shyness
On the day I received an offer from my first-choice university, I expected to feel
elation and excitement. I had spent years preparing for this moment, and yet when it
came, I felt only dread at the thought of freshers’ week and all the social challenges this
would inevitably involve. Nonetheless, I assumed this was a stroke of extreme good luck
- a one-off, though the potential for rejection seemed immense, and I feared I would
spend the next few years in loneliness. But, luckily, I was wrong.
Today, as a science writer, I’ve witnessed a wealth of new research that has
identified the psychological barriers that prevent us from building better relationships.
Consider a phenomenon known as the liking gap. In a series of experiments,
psychologists asked two strangers to meet and chat and then questioned each party about
their expectations and perceptions of the conversation. Before speaking, both assumed
that the exchange would feel uncomfortable - yet they ended up enjoying it far more
than they had believed they would.
One study examined the impressions of university dorm-mates, with
questionnaires in September - when they first met - and follow-ups in October,
December, February and May. The researchers found the liking gap, firmly established
on the first meeting, persisted for several months, until the roomies had eventually
formed a more stable relationship with more accurate judgements of each other’s
feelings.
When I first learned about this research, I couldn’t help but cringe at all the times
I had been afflicted by the liking gap at university. After meeting charming, funny and
kind people, whom I wanted to get to know better, I would doubt that this was
reciprocated. As a result, I would avoid any further contact for fear that I might seem
embarrassingly needy. I would even turn down party invitations from people who I
genuinely appreciated and admired, on the assumption they had only asked me out of
politeness.
I believe, the liking gap has its roots in too much introspection. We are so busy
worrying about the impression we’ve given - and agonising over every tiny thing that
we might have said wrong, thought wrong, done wrong - that we miss all the positive
signals. We don’t notice someone’s laughter or encouraging smile or the warmth in their
eyes.

Digging into the scientific literature, I soon found examples of many other
misplaced fears. For instance, many of us are too shy about giving compliments or
expressing our gratitude for other’s actions, for instance. We assume that they already
know how great they are and we doubt our abilities to express those compliments
elegantly. We imagine our gestures will seem clumsy and awkward.
Expressing appreciation of others not only brings joy to the person receiving the
praise but also to the person saying it; most people feel much better for having spoken
their warm feelings. Unfortunately, our natural reserve means that most of us miss out
on these opportunities to cement our bonds.
Surprisingly, I have found that simply learning about concepts such as the liking
gap can help us conquer our shyness, but it also needs perseverance if the effects are to
last. As you will have found when learning any skill, greater confidence comes with
regular practice outside our usual comfort zones.
For me, an ambition to speak Italian gave me the necessary push. As my fluency
in the language increased, I started arranging “conversation exchanges” with native
speakers who wished to practise their English. Needless to say, I made many blunders,
but I was touched to see how sensitively my conversation partners saved me from
embarrassment and how easy it was to build a friendship despite the language barrier.
Striking up new conversations in my native language suddenly felt a lot less daunting.
At the height of my shyness at university, it would have seemed inconceivable
that I would write a book about social connection - let alone support it with public talks
and media interviews. I don’t regret those years of anxiety, I remember that time with
overwhelming gratitude to all the people who proved my fears of rejection to be false.

Task 2
For items 1-10, read the passage below and choose which of the sentences A-K fit into
the numbered gaps in the text. There is one extra sentence which does not fit in any of
the gaps.
One of the staples of the Russian cuisine and daily diet historically has always
been porridge. (1)
_____. Guryev porridge’ breaks all the rules. (2)
_____. You can
serve it every day or on a festive table.
(3)
_____. However, in this case, there is abundant evidence that Count and
Minister of Finance Dmitry Guryev did indeed bring this amazing dish into the everyday
life of Russian nobility.
(4)
_____. The Count in fact was difficult to surprise with culinary masterpieces,
but this dish made an indelible impression on him. Soon after Guryev's porridge began
to conquer the estates and country mansions of Russian nobility. (5)
_____. The dish
was very popular and became a favorite dessert of Emperor Alexander III.
In Russian cuisine, Guryev porridge appeared at about the same times as beef
Stroganoff. (6)
_____. The main reason is the extremely laborious method in which it
has to be cooked. (7)
_____
Semolina porridge itself proves to be a deceptively simple but simultaneously
complicated porridge, a feature that differentiates it from all other traditional Russian
porridges. (8)
_____. However, many still love it: it takes just a few minutes to cook and
has a very tender and creamy consistency.
(9)
_____. Even though it sounds not particularly tasty, these skins are sweet and
delicious, giving the porridge its signature caramelly taste that distinguishes it from
other desserts.
To “assemble” the dish you have to first cover the bottom of the bowl with a layer

A) The method involves layering semolina cooked with whole milk or cream with
golden skins from baked cream.
B) Guryev porridge is said to have been created in the XIX century by Zakhar Kuzmin -
a serf cook of Dmitry Guryev.
C) Then top it with a layer of baked milk skins, then a light layer of caramelized nuts,
broken into pieces, then the mixed fruit.
D) The dish is a unique combination of semolina, nuts, berries and caramel-flavored
milk skins which turn a simple porridge into a scrumptious sweet dish.
E) The problem is that semolina can form into lumps during cooking, and kids and
adults usually can’t stand this.
F) The name Guryevskaya was firmly entrenched for the porridge, although its biggest
fan did not even know the recipe for its preparation.
G) Regardless of the theories, it is unquestionable that the dish has a century-long
history, as it was even served during the coronation of Tsar Alexander III in 1881.
H) Moreover, we tend to associate porridge with a healthy breakfast routine, and not
with a show-stopping dessert.
I) However, unlike the latter, the classical interpretation of the former is not easy to find
in modern restaurants.
J) Another signature ingredient in Guryev porridge is baked milk “skins”.
K) Over the centuries recipes have been attributed to historical figures without any
basis.

Задание 18.
Task 1. Items 1-15 (15 points)
For questions 1-15, read the text below and look carefully at each line. Some of the
lines are correct, and some have a word which should not be there.
If a line is correct put a tick. Use letter "V" as a tick. If a line has a word which should
not be there, write the word in a given space. There are two examples at the beginning
(0 and 00).

A Tokyo developer will demolish down a building for spoiling the
down
view. Why doesn’t Britain care about beauty?
00
Politicians and planners are allowing the Thames to become an urban
V
canyon -avarice always seems to win out.
1
A Japanese developer has been announced it will demolish a new
tower of luxury flats in Tokyo only weeks from completing. The
been
reason? The 10-storey building was blocking beautiful views of Mount
Fuji.
2
The idea a developer would reach such a decision in Britain is
inconceivable. In London, flats are usually built to make a profit. If
who
they have a beautiful view, good luck to those who buying them. To
hell with anyone else’s beauty.
3
One of what was the government’s last decision greenlighting a
huge 20-storey concrete slab that is being about to rise on the banks of
being
the Thames next to the National Theatre.
4
It is hideous, and will dominate the once-glorious view of the St Paul’s
cathedral from Waterloo Bridge. Paradoxically, its developer is a
the
Japanese Corporation Mitsubishi.
5
Beauty is a word you never hear in British election campaigns. They
are about money and little else. In Tokyo, the dignified regulation of the
does
public sector does matters.
6
Maintaining the beauty of the environment is not a nimby fad but a duty
V
expected of government in the public’s interest and pleasure.
7
The current collapse of planning control in the capital has seen two
Nine Elms towers to rise almost 60 storeys, making Big Ben look like a
to
toothpick in comparison. Last week, another “luxury” monster
was announced up-river, near Battersea Park.

The company behind the scheme is spotted a subsidiary of Cerberus
Capital Management, run by an American billionaire, Stephen
spotted
Feinberg.
9
These towers now are litter the Thames, being mostly foreign-owned
and empty. A Guardian survey of one Vauxhall tower revealed
are
just 10% of its occupants are British.
10
The new Battersea tower could hardly be more out of place. It will soar
as a ghostly presence over the visually delicate neighbourhood of
utterly
Chelsea. It will also tower over the secluded acres of the park and
continue the conversion of the Thames into an utterly urban canyon.
11
I cannot imagine another world city that would permit such visual
outrages. Parisians laugh with derision at what has been done to
V
London’s skyline. Romans are astonished. Americans ask, but who is in
charge?
12
No one consults London’s citizens in any meaningful way on these
a
planning decisions. They are visible assertions of the power of a greed.
13
High-buildings policy in the capital is supposedly overseen by the
mayor, at present Sadiq Khan. Like his predecessors, Ken Livingstone
hardly
and Boris Johnson, he has no sense of beauty. Government ministers
also hardly refuse to interfere because their party coffers are stuffed by
the building lobby.
14
In Tokyo, we see democracy working. The Fuji affair is that of a
community demanding that the beauty of its surroundings shall be
shall
respected by elected authority.
15
The sadness is that no British politician has the guts to tell Mitsubishi to
V
show London the deference to beauty demanded in Japan.

ошибки в написании слов, которые не приводят к образованию нового слова
(different - differen).
если один раз слово написано правильно, а другой раз неправильно
-
неправильное написание считать орфографической ошибкой
2. Однотипные ошибки считаются один раз.
3. При подсчете пунктуационных ошибок учитываются только следующие ошибки:
1) наличие точки в заголовке (при наличии заголовка);
2) отсутствие точки или восклицательного знака в конце предложения;
3) отсутствие вопросительного знака в конце вопроса;
4) отсутствие запятой при перечислении или в бессоюзном сложносочиненном

Listening comprehension
For items 1-10 listen to a talk about an explorer and decide whether the statements
(1-10) are TRUE (A), or FALSE (B) according to the text you hear. You will hear
the text twice.
You have 20 seconds to study the statements.
(pause 20 seconds)
Now we begin.
Good morning. The subject of today's talk is the explorer Thor Heyerdahl. First of all,
I'll give you some backg0round information, before going on to look at his career,
achievements and finally, his main publications and awards.
Heyerdahl was born in Larvik in Southern Norway in 1914. He studied Zoology and
Geography at the University of Oslo, but gave it up and then made his first expedition
to Polynesia from 1937 to 1938. While he was staying in Polynesia, Heyerdahl
became interested in how the islands were first inhabited. He had the idea that
humans came with the ocean currents from the west.
Now I'd like to look at his career. After giving up his study of Geography, he set out
to prove his theories. How did he attempt to test his theories? Well, to begin with, in
1947 he built a raft named the Коn-Tiki, and then with five companions crossed from
Peru to Polynesia in 101 days. The main idea he wanted to prove was that the cultures
of the ancient world were linked by sailors who could cross oceans. After the success
of the Kon-Tiki expedition, Heyerdahl continued to travel. He organised the
Norwegian archaeological expedition to the Galapagos Islands in 1952, before
leading an expedition to Easter Island from 1955 to 1956. In addition to this, during
1969 and 1970 he sailed two more rafts, Ra 1 and Ra 2, across the Atlantic to show
that ancient Egyptians had contact with South America.
What will Heyerdahl be remembered for? Well, most people believe his greatest
achievement was the Kon-Tiki Expedition. However, all his expeditions and ideas
had a great influence on anthropology and archaeology. Moving on to his
publications, the most famous were The Kon-Tiki Expedition, in 1948, The Ra
Expeditions, in 1970 and The Tigris Expedition, in 1980.
Finally, I'd like to turn to his awards. He received many awards during his lifetime -
two of the most important were his election to the Norwegian Academy of Sciences

in 1958 and then the American Academy of Science in 1960. Furthermore, his film of
the Коn-Tiki expedition won an Oscar in 1951 for best documentary feature.
Thor Heyerdahl died in 2002 at his home in Italy.

For items 2-6 listen to a conversation between a student representative and the
principal of the college board of governors. Choose the correct answer (A, B or C) to
answer the questions 2-6. You will hear the text only once.
You now have 25 seconds to study the questions.
(pause 25 seconds)
Now we begin.
Principal: OK, I accept what you're saying about the library and the equipment, and
some of the staff. I'll raise those issues with the Board of Governors. Now, you want
to discuss late-night parties in the halls of residence, right?
Eva: Yes, they're a problem. A lot of students have complained about them. There
seem to be more and more parties in people's rooms these days, and they're really
noisy, you know, loud music, everyone talking at the top of their voices, dancing.
They often go on for hours, and nobody else can do any work. That's the problem.
P: Mmm, that's not fair, is it? A lot of students study in the evenings in their room.
They need some peace and quiet.
E: Exactly.
P: Let's see, there are several ways to deal with this. Erm ... we could agree to ban
parties in rooms, or we could only allow parties after the exams. What do you think?
E: Well, the good thing is that it's fair to everyone, but the bad thing is that it
wouldn't be very popular. I mean, everyone likes parties, don't they? It's part of our
education. Suppose we let each floor of the hall have one party each semester. That'd
reduce the number of parties a lot.
P: Maybe, but there would still be quite a lot of noise when each floor had their party.
No, to be honest, I don't think that's the right thing to do. What other things can we
do?

E: How about letting the students book a room in the main building for parties? You
could charge a small fee, and tell them that they have to book, say, four weeks in
advance. I think most people would accept that.
P: Yes, good idea. That's the best solution, I think. OK, so the next thing to do is for
me to talk to everyone. How about if I attend your next student union meeting? I
could explain the proposal there.
You have 20 seconds to check your answers.
(pause 20 seconds)
This is the end of the listening comprehension part. You have 1 minute to

READING
Time: 45 minutes (20 points)
Task 1
For items 7-16, read the passage below and choose the option which best fits according
to the text.
The openness of talking to strangers
Catherine Carr shares her experience of talking to strangers.
You may be surprised to learn that one of my ideas of top entertainment is to
people-watch. You’ll find me at it in cafés, bars, on trains. The only thing that can beat it
is to take the extra step and strike up a conversation. Not the party kind one. I prefer the
bigger sort, with feelings and explanations of passions, maybe with a bit of childhood
thrown in.
Early on in my career as a radio reporter, this preference for the personal over the
professional was obvious. I didn’t make the greatest of newshounds, as I was often
completely diverted by the lives which surrounded the headline. Often, after switching
off the recorder, instead of hurrying back to file my piece, I ended up chatting some
more and more.
Some time later, I moved to Colchester and started recording my podcast, Where
Are You Going? Its concept is simple: I potter around any location talking to strangers
and asking them that question. The answers are sometimes funny, sometimes surprising,
tragic or shocking. Occasionally they take your breath away. On one single sunny day,
for instance, I recorded interviews with an artist in a fluffy orange cardigan, a pair of
retired special needs teachers on their way to buy ice-creams, and a trio of Iranian
refugees.
Or, I remember a hot September lunchtime, when I started talking to a man I have
never met before. He was on the way to Boots and he told me he’d been married for
years and was currently waiting for a hip replacement. He played in a rock band that
performed all over Essex. He then told me how his Italian father had met his English
mother. His parents’ marriage was a happy one and the story was precious to him. He
told me about his trips to Tuscany and lovely meetings he had with the Italian relatives.
This September, the podcast won an award at the British Podcast Awards and lots
of listeners tell us they have found a blueprint for creating connections of their own,
understanding it can be quite possible to talk to people you don’t know and share a little
of each other’s lives.
In his fascinating book Hello, Stranger writer William Buckingham writes that
there is something freeing and comfortable in talking to strangers, in the possibilities
they bring. Strangers are unentangled in our worlds and lives and this lack can lighten
our own burden. This is why strangers can unexpectedly become confidants.” He says
3
Всероссийская олимпиада школьников. Английский язык. 2024-2025 уч г.
Муниципальный этап. 10-11 классы
that strangers often trade the most surprising revelations and confidences as there’s little
chance of ever seeing each other again.
At the beginning, I assumed lots of people would wave me away or tell me not to
invade their privacy, or just be baffled by the whole idea of me asking: “Where are you
going?” But the vast majority do not and aren’t. People seem to want to talk and very
often about really important things.
Gina, a friend of mine, who is a psychotherapist, was less surprised that people
opened up in this way. In her experience, people in therapy often blurt out the most
vulnerable and important thing just as the hour’s session is ending. She explained that
it’s a safe window of time, after which they leave the room and there is no comeback.
The few minutes I spend with people I talk to are perhaps a cross between the
confessional described by Buckingham and the last few ticks of the clock in the therapy
room. Interviewees are always anonymous and - after we chat - we go our separate
ways. Even though the conversation can become intimate very quickly, it is also only a
brief moment shared, which then sort of closes up behind us.
In the time since I started asking strangers where they are going, the world has
changed, politics has become more divisive and spaces to talk openly feel rarer. A lot of
interactions take place online and - as we all know - can become angry pretty quickly.
So I’m always expecting the people I approach to reflect that - and to be hostile to the
idea of talking to a stranger about things that really matter to them. But instead, I keep
finding the opposite. People are as open as ever and - post pandemic - even more keen
for connection.

Task 2
For items 1-10, read the passage below and choose which of the sentences A-K fit into
the numbered gaps in the text. There is one extra sentence which does not fit in any of
the gaps.
Tsvetaeva apple pie (tsvetaevski pirog) is a neat little dessert familiar to both
Russian home bakers and poetry lovers. (1)
_____
One of the unofficial stories has it that the pie was loved by the family of Marina
Tsvetaeva and often baked and served by Marina and her sister Anastasia at tea time,
when they were young ladies and spent their holidays and summers at a dacha in Tarusa
with relatives and closest friends. (2)
_____
In reality, there is no paper trail to confirm this story. (3)
_____. She admitted she
was generally hopeless and awful at cooking and housekeeping, too. (4)
_____
In her memoirs, Anastasia recalls a large cozy garden with apple trees and a
veranda. (5)
_____. Indeed, sour cream was and is the most important ingredient of the
pie, along with apples.
(6)
_____. That is why Russian fans of Tsvetaeva's poetry usually celebrate her
birthday by making her favorite apple pie.
(7)
_____. In fact, adding sour cream into the dough makes the piecrust tenderer
and richer in taste. And the same goes with the filling. Some say that sour cream is a
good Slavic alternative to cream cheese. (8)
_____
The best apple varieties for Tsvetaeva apple pie are Antonovka or Bogatyr, which
can be picked in late autumn. (9)
_____. Although the traditional version of the pie calls
for apples, sour cream base also goes perfectly with lots of other fruits and especially
berries. So why not try adding strawberries into the recipe, the most summerish berries?
The pie is equally delicious when served warm or cooled. (10)
_____. Enjoy a

A) It gives desserts a very similar signature sourish hint with a unique creamy
consistency.
B) The latter would often say the pies were so good, with sweet filling (or ‘zalivka’) and
contrasting tang from the apples, that the recipe spread across the country bearing
Marina’s name.
C) Today, the peculiarity of the pie still lies in its delicate sour cream dough.
D) Marina Tsvetaeva herself was born on one of those apple-scented October days,
when the sky is motionless and fallen leaves are blanketed by the first frosty fog.
E) According to another theory, which sounds more plausible, the pie came from the
Tsvetaevs' neighbors.
F) Some say that chilling it in the fridge for 3-5 hours makes it even tenderer and
creamier in texture.
G) It is unclear how it came to be associated with Marina Tsvetaeva, a famous poetess,
incredibly talented and rebellious, living in the early twentieth century Russia.
H) In addition to the traditional recipe with apples, there are also more other variants
with fruit and berry fillings, like pears and strawberries.
I) There would always be a samovar on the ready and the table would be laid with sweet
pies made with delicious sour cream.
J) These have a slightly sour taste, which goes so well with the thin shortcrust pastry and
delicate sour cream based filling.
K) By Marina's own admission, she could only write poetry and was completely useless
in the kitchen.

USE OF ENGLISH
Time: 60 minutes (45 points)
Задание 18.
(0 and 00).
How can I improve my conversation skills?
0
I’m ignored when I try to chat to people. How do you do conversation?
V
I don’t understand how it works. I can only ever communicate factual
information such as “A coffee and a croissant, please.”
00
Other people seem to rattle on about anything and everything,
latter
constantly jumping from one topic to another, but I can never follow. If
I ever feel that I have something to contribute and try to join in they
simply ignore me or change the latter subject.
1
If I will try to initiate a conversation, for example by complimenting
someone on their obviously expensive camera, they will initially
respond but after about 60 seconds turn away as soon as they realise
that I am “trying to make conversation”.
2
On the other one hand, I am able to express myself very well in writing.
Even more paradoxically I make a good living as a translator (in written
form), translating from various European languages.
3
Partly this is because I take a very analytical approach to language and
so I am able to dig too deep into the meaning of what the writer is
trying to convey.
4
I also get along very well with animals, using a body language. For
instance, I can get dogs to follow me around, walk to heel, sit or lie
down merely by using gestures.
5
But it would be far nice to take my conversational skills a little bit
higher. Any tips?
Quite a lot of people aren’t as skilled at conversation as they think, so
you are not alone. What’s great is that you are curious and asking the
question.
8
Всероссийская олимпиада школьников. Английский язык. 2024-2025 уч г.
Муниципальный этап. 10-11 классы
6
Some people are being stuck on transmit (“rambling”) and think talking
about themselves is good chat. Some think interrogating the other
person is the way to go. But conversation is the turning together of two
people. A lot of people mistake talking for conversation.
7
I wouldn’t necessarily always blame yourself either; a fruitful
conversation does it require input from two people, not just one left
doing the heavy lifting.
8
I went to psychotherapist and skilled conversationalist Chris Mills with
whom I did a podcast on the art of listening which is a great bedrock of
conversation.
9
Mills pondered on at “the difference between small talk and delivering
factual information. The fundamental for a conversation to be
successful is that it has to make emotional contact and a list of facts
(“croissant and coffee”) on their own won’t do that. It has to have
emotional zing.”
10
So to layer on what you already do you could add, “the croissants look
great - do you make them here?” or “this coffee hits the spot, what a
blend is it?”
11
These things won’t trigger a massive conversation because baristas
often have a queue to serve over, but they are stepping stones and good
practice points.
12
We also have had to be realistic about how far some conversations, in
certain settings, can go. I think it’s entirely realistic that after
60
seconds someone will call time on talking about a camera. Even the
most skilled conversationalist would struggle.
13
That said by some people need fewer triggers. Some spill more slowly.
Being interested and curious - which you clearly are - is a great
springboard for conversation; we are after all hard-wired for
connection.
14
“To have a conversation you have to be able to imagine how what
you’re saying is going to land with the other person. And that takes
after empathy,” says Mills. Observation is also a great tool for
conversation: just hearing what others talk about. There’s a reason
talking about the weather is a stalwart in so many countries. It’s a
connection, it’s non-committal, it’s not too personal and you can test
the water with the other person.
9
Всероссийская олимпиада школьников. Английский язык. 2024-2025 уч г.
Муниципальный этап. 10-11 классы
15
But like I am said, you have to be realistic. Some conversations will
never go beyond a few exchanges. Listen carefully to what people are
saying and instead of facts maybe think about feelings. So if someone
says, “We’re going on holiday to X” try something like “have you ever
been before? Are you excited about going?” Good luck!
Task 2. Items 19-28 (10 points)
For items 19-28, complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the
