Listening Comprehension
Listen to the dialogue between Agnes and her grandfather and decide whether
the statements (1-5) are TRUE, FALSE or this information is not provided in
the text - NOT STATED - according to the dialogue you hear. You will hear the
text twice. Now you have 15 seconds to read the statements.
(Pause 15 seconds)
Now we begin.
Agnes: Hey, Grandpa! What are you looking at? Who is this boy in this old photo?
Ah! Is it you? Why are you swimming in boiling water? How are you still alive?
Grandfather: It’s not boiling, silly! It’s just warm. It’s the cold temperature outside
that makes all that steam. This is an outdoor swimming pool in Moscow. It was about
minus thirty Celsius that day in January 1975.
Agnes: You went to Moscow in 1975?
Grandfather: I did! I was in my early 20s and an art student. There was this great
museum in the very center of Moscow where I spent hours every day. Then I crossed
the street and swam in this outdoor swimming pool. And guess what the air smelled
like!
Agnes: Chlorine?
Grandfather: Chocolates!
Agnes: No!
Grandfather: Yes! There was a chocolate factory across the river from the
swimming pool. And the air around it smelled so good! Why don’t we go to Moscow
for the Christmas holidays?
Agnes: That would be cool!
Grandfather: Listen, Agnes, do you have your phone with you? Google Swimming
Pool “Moskva”!
Agnes: Sure! Let’s see… Hey, it doesn’t exist anymore!
Grandfather: What do you mean?
Agnes: There is this huge church that was built in its place.
Grandfather: Really? Hmm!...
Agnes: Wow, Grandpa! I’ve just googled swimming in winter in Moscow. There is
this cool Walrus club - they cut a huge hole in the ice in a forest lake and swim in icy
water! I've never heard of anything so cool! Let’s do that!
Grandfather: You think your parents would allow you?

Agnes: We won’t tell them!
Grandfather: Hey, Agnes, google that chocolate factory! It was called Red October.
Does it still exist?
Agnes: Let’s see… It does exist, but … they moved it away from the center of
Moscow.
Grandfather: No! It doesn’t smell like chocolates there anymore?
Agnes: I guess not. But wait a second! They turned the old chocolate factory building
into a tourist place! Look at these cool restaurants and shops! I would love to go
there!
Grandfather: Hmm… There was another place I spent hours in - a museum of an
18th-century theatre. There was this aristocrat who turned his peasants into actors and
turned the palace he lived in into a theatre. It was called… the Ostankino Palace. Is it
still there? It has to be!
Agnes: Let’s see… It is still there; it is still a museum…
Grandfather: Good!
Agnes: But … it’s been closed for reconstruction since 2013!
Grandfather: Are you sure it’s still closed? It’s been more than 10 years!
Agnes: Yup! You can see the park around it, but you can’t go inside the museum!
Grandfather: Ah, well. When I was your age, my grandfather once told me - “When
you get old, never go to places where you were happy as a young man. It will always
be a disappointment because what you will never find there is your youth.” It looks
like I’m old enough to start listening to my grandpa’s wisdom.
Agnes: Sorry, Grandpa!
You will hear the dialogue again in 30 seconds.
(pause 30 seconds)
Now listen to the dialogue again.
(Dialogue repeated)
Now you have 30 seconds to finish the task.
This is the end of the listening comprehension task. Now you can start working
on your reading task.

Read an interview in which an Irish-Australian writer called Patrick O'Reilly is talking
about the Irish-Gaelic language, and answer questions 8-15 choosing option A, B, C or
D which best fits according to the text.
Interviewer: Good evening, everyone. With me in the studio today is Patrick O'Reilly, a
third-generation Irish-Australian who is a writer and broadcaster and passionate
supporter of the Irish-Gaelic language. Welcome, Patrick.
Patrick: Thank you, Sinead.
Interviewer: Tell me Patrick, what significance does Irish have for you?
Patrick: Well, as you said, I'm an Irish-Australian. Irish is my second language; I didn't
learn it in Ireland, but here in Australia. In the 18th century it was the first language of
many of the Irish people who settled here.
Interviewer: And didn't it almost slip away at one point?
Patrick: That's right, but it never quite vanished. So to me, Irish is a language of this
country. It's in the streets of a Melbourne suburb, the heat of Australian summers. It's the
language in which I speak to my daughter, in which I broadcast and in which I write. I'm
conscious of its history here.
Interviewer: How do you feel about the language itself?
Patrick: Well, Irish is a language of passionate songs, and it has one of the oldest
literatures in western Europe.
It's descended from the language of those Celts who arrived in the British Isles at the
end of the Bronze Age, so it dates back thousands of years. But for me, what is truly
remarkable is that when Ireland finally became independent early in the last century, the
Irish language acquired renewed importance as a vehicle of scholarship. Now it has a
television network and has achieved something inconceivable, even 30 years ago: it has
also become trendy and positively cool today.
Interviewer: And what made you want to learn Irish as a language?
Patrick: You may well ask! When I began learning the language my enthusiasm was
viewed as eccentric.
Interviewer: Why?
Patrick: Well, some people thought that Irish-Gaelic was dead, like Latin, although in
fact it was still spoken as a first language by a few thousand people on the west coast of
Ireland. So why did I learn it? Ireland wasn't a part of my childhood in any significant
way. My great- grandparents had come here from Southern Ireland during the Gold
Rush, and we had become solidly Australian. But I liked languages and the worlds they
could reveal. Irish promised me a world of my own. I was conscious, I think, that my
3

people's past lay elsewhere.
Interviewer: And your Irish ancestry has played a big part in your writing too, I
believe?
Patrick: That's right. The stories I write in Irish are published only in Ireland, yet they
deal with the peculiar situation of the language here in Australia. If I write in English, I
use a language which has had time to adapt to a new history, a new society. It has its
own accent, its own everyday language. This has also happened with Italian, but Italian
is the first or second language of a whole community. Irish in this country is the
language of scattered individuals, so it hasn't adapted to modern needs. As an Australian
who writes in Irish, I must bring about the linguistic adaptation which has taken 200
years to accomplish in English.
Interviewer: And yet you implied earlier that Irish had become fashionable. Is that the
case in Australia?
Patrick: Well, yes, here it actually means that every year a number of people go to Irish
language classes, and that a minority eventually become fluent. Irish has become a new
trend because Ireland itself is now a major draw for tourists. Thousands of Australians
visit Ireland every year to seek the house their great-grandmother was born in, Irish
relatives. Others want to see the green landscape of old legends. For some, the Irish
language is part of all this. I once interviewed a young woman from Melbourne who
became so fascinated by traditional Irish singing that she learned Irish and now works in
the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland!
Interviewer: And what other motivation would Australians have for learning Irish?
Patrick: Well, many will tell you that it's something to do with their interest in
languages. But I would say that other motives are concealed in this phrase - motives as
various as the individuals. It's also true, surely, that it allows the expression of an aspect
of identity long suppressed, yet felt to be vital. Few people can bear to be rootless. We
must all come from somewhere, and language is a fundamental part of identity. Not
many feel the need to explore their past by learning Irish, but that even a few should do
so, is significant.
Interviewer: Thank you, Patrick, it's been interesting talking to you.
Patrick: Thank you.

How far is Moscow?
Moscow is not so far from Europe. It'll take you only a few hours to get from London,
Paris or any other European capitals. A Moscow city break can be easily included in
your European trip itinerary.
When to come?
That's the first question many people ask. To give an unambiguous answer is tough. The
most experienced would reply the best season is summer. Russian "summer" usually
comes in May and stays up to mid-September. The average July temperature is around
25 C (76 F). Warm weather and short nights favor long walks around Moscow.
Planning your Moscow city break keep in mind that summer is also the busiest tourist
season. Why not come in a quieter time of the year? Moscow is so charming in the early
May, when the nature is waking up and lilac, cherry, chestnut trees are blossoming.
Early autumn is also majestic; October brings the stunning colors of falling leaves. The

Moscow is not a common Cheap City Breaks destination. It is often voted as one of the
most expensive cities in the world. But this is not always true. A budget hotel will cost
you around 80 EUR per night; a dorm bed in hostel can be only 12 EUR, a meal in a

Are you tired of (0)

Maybe it is time to get acquainted with a long and fascinating history of Russia
and its cultural heritage? It is high time you visited Moscow, the city with

PAUSE 20 SECONDS
Now we begin.
F It’s been described as the fastest ball game in the world, and is played in places as
far away as Australia and South Africa but it actually comes from our western
neighbours over in Ireland. Many of us know next to nothing about this sport so it
will come as a surprise to learn that it has been played competitively all over our
country since the 19th century. Sean McGinn of the British Gaelic Athletic
Association is here to tell us a bit about the sport of hurling. Hi, Sean, thanks for
coming. Could you give us a brief description of hurling?
M Sure. Well, it’s played on a pitch of around 140 metres long and 85 metres wide,
although for youth matches it’s considerably smaller. There are two teams of 15
people and each player has a slim bat called a hurley which is made from ash wood.
Players use the hurley to propel a small leather ball, which is slightly bigger than a
tennis ball. There are two ways to score points during a match - by scoring into the
goal and past the goalkeeper, whose hurley is slightly bigger than the outfield
players’... just to give him a chance... or you can score by hitting the ball over the bar
but between two long posts. A goal scored past the goalkeeper is worth 3 points while
putting it over the bar is worth 1.
F Well that all sounds relatively easy. Is it?
M Not so easy as all that I’m afraid. As you said earlier, it is the fastest ball game in
the world. A good hurler can hit the ball up to 150 kilometres an hour and the ball can
travel as much as 110 metres. There are also a few rules that make the whole thing
trickier for the players. You can’t just pick up the ball from the floor, you have to
flick it up using the hurley. You can’t carry the ball in your hand for more than 4
steps, so you have to run while balancing the ball on the hurley, which is no easy
thing. There are also restrictions on the way you can tackle another player, so all in
all it’s a sport that requires a high level of skill and years of practice.
F And tell us how popular the sport is outside Ireland.
M Well the history of Ireland is dominated by emigration. While the country itself
has a population of less than 7 million, it’s often claimed that there are over 70
million people around the world with Irish ancestry. Nearly 11% of Americans see
Всероссийская олимпиада школьников. Английский язык. 2024-2025 уч г.

themselves as Irish-Americans. My own parents came over to Britain from Galway in
the West of Ireland in the 1930s. Wherever these emigrants went, they took their
sport with them. So now hurling is played in places such as Britain, the USA,
Canada, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, as well as places in
continental Europe - for example there are teams from Brussels, from Luxembourg,
from Munich, Paris and Zurich.
F And what would you say the appeal of the sport is?
M As well as the cultural aspect: keeping in touch with your roots, the game itself is
so fast moving and so skilful that it’s hard to take your eyes away from the action for
even a second. Also in these days of the commercialisation of sport when you have
footballers or formula one drivers earning more in a week than most of us will see in
a lifetime, it’s important to remember that even at the very highest level, hurling
players are amateurs. That and the absence of violence between supporters... even in
the most important matches there’s no segregation between rival fans... gives the
sport a purity and nobility that I don’t think you get in other sports.
F Thanks, Sean. I think we all know a little more about what sounds like a fascinating
sport. That was Sean McGinn of the British Gaelic Athletic Association talking about
the sport of hurling.

Read the text about the history of chewing gum and do the tasks that follow.
The History of Chewing Gum
A
Do you like chewing gum? Millions of people around the world do. It’s difficult to
imagine a place where people don’t chew gum. Chewing gum has been taken up
the highest mountain peaks, deep down into the ocean, and even into space.
B
Chewing gum has been around for a very long time. The ancient Greeks were
chewing gum as early as A.D. 50. They chewed sap from the mastic tree. In
Central America, the Mayans chewed chicle, the sap of the sapodilla tree. When
the Pilgrims came to North America, Native Americans gave them the sap of
spruce trees to chew.
C
In 1848, John Curtis of Maine made the first chewing gum for sale. The gum sold
so well that Curtis built the world’s first gum factory and hired 200 workers. In
1906, Frank Fleer came up with the idea of bubble gum. He called his gum
“Blibber-Blubber”, but it never went to market because it was so sticky that if it
got on the skin, a person had to scrub it with turpentine or paint thinner to
remove it.
D
In 1928, the first successful bubble gum, Dubble Bubble, was invented by an
accountant named Walter Diemer. He worked for a chewing gum company in
Philadelphia. While experimenting with different gum recipes in his spare time,
Diemer stumbled upon a formula that produced a less sticky, more elastic gum
that could be easily blown into bubbles. As he watched the first bubble gum batch
being made, he realized that it had no colour. He grabbed the only colouring they
had at the factory - pink. The gum became so popular that most bubble gum today
is still pink.
E
Let’s take a look at how gum is made. There must be a base to make the gum
sticky. This base is usually a combination of natural and synthetic products. The
natural base is made from latex. Latex is the sap that flows in certain trees found
in the rainforest. First, the ingredients for the base are mixed together. They are
heated to a high temperature and a thick syrup is formed. The syrup is poured into
a giant mixer that can hold up to a ton of ingredients. Natural or sugar-free
sweeteners are added to make the gum sweet and moist. Then flavourings are
added according to the recipe being used.

F When the gum comes out of the mixers, it looks like bread dough. It is put aside to
cool. From there it goes to machines that knead it. Then, for regular gum, the
mixture is rolled into sheets and cut into sticks, while bubble gum is shaped into
balls. Once shaped, the gum is wrapped and sent to stores.
