44. Install large detent plug (1) in the side of the rear

housing (2).

45. Install back up lamp switch (1) and tighten bolt (2)

to 10 N·m (88 in. lbs.). Then lay transmission
down on bench.

46. Install input shaft (1) snap ring (2).

47. Install input shaft seal in front housing with

Installer 9620 (1) and Tube C-3717 (2).

48. Install clutch bearing release support (1) and

tighten bolts (2) to 10 N·m (88 in. lbs.).

49. Install Wrench 9586 (1) on input shaft (2).

50. Install countershaft allen bolt (1) in front housing.

Tighten allen bolt (1) to 90 N·m (66 ft. lbs.).

51. Install countershaft plug in front housing (1) with

Installer 9622 (2) and Handle C-4171.

52. Install the cover plate for the second shift tower

location, if necessary.

53. Apply Mopar

T

Lock & Seal or equivalent to shifter

socket threads and install shifter socket (1).

INSTALLATION

NOTE: If a new transmission is being installed, be sure to use all components supplied with the new trans-
mission. For example, if a new shift tower is supplied with the new transmission, do not re-use the original
shift tower.

1. Apply light coat of Mopar

T

high temperature bearing grease to contact surfaces of following components:

•

input shaft splines.

•

release bearing slide surface of front retainer.

•

release bearing bore.

•

release fork.

•

release fork ball stud.

•

propeller shaft slip yoke.

2. Apply sealer to threads of drain plug, then install plug in case.

3. Mount transmission on jack and position transmission under vehicle. Secure transmission to jack with safety

chains.

4. Raise transmission until input shaft is centered in clutch disc hub.

5. Move transmission forward and start input shaft in clutch disc.

6. Work transmission forward until seated against engine.

NOTE: Do not allow transmission to remain unsupported after input shaft has entered clutch disc.

7. Install and tighten transmission to engine bolts to:

•

3/8 in. Diameter housing to engine bolts 41 N·m (30 ft. lbs.)

•

10 mm Diameter structural dust cover bolts 54 N·m (40 ft. lbs.) (Refer to 9 - ENGINE/ENGINE BLOCK/
STRUCTURAL COVER - INSTALLATION).

•

7/16 in. Diameter engine to housing bolts 68 N·m (50 ft. lbs.)

•

1/4 in. Diameter dust shield bolt 4.5 N·m (40 in. lbs.)

8. Position transmission harness wires in clips on shift cover.

9. Install slave cylinder and shield, if equipped.

10. Install transmission mount on transmission or rear crossmember.

2WD

1. Install rear crossmember.

NOTE: Ensure wiring harness is clear before installing crossmember.

2. Remove transmission jack and engine support fixture.

3. Align and install propeller shaft.

4. Lower vehicle.
