Remove the bolt and ground wire

Disconnect the starter connector

Remove the nut and disconnect the starter wire

Remove the starter   

DISASSEMBLY

REMOVE STARTER DUST PROTECTOR 

a

Remove the 2 dust protectors

REMOVE STARTER YOKE ASSEMBLY 

a

Remove the nut and disconnect the lead wire from the magnetic switch terminal

Remove the 2 bolts

Pull out the starter yoke with the armature from the magnetic switch

Remove the O-ring from the starter yoke

REMOVE STARTER CLUTCH SUB-ASSEMBLY

Remove the 2 screws

Remove the return spring, idler gear, clutch roller, retainer, O-ring and starter clutch from the 
starter housing

Using a magnetic finger, remove the steel ball from the clutch shaft hole

REMOVE STARTER BRUSH HOLDER ASSEMBLY 

a

Remove the 2 screws, O-ring and end cover from the starter yoke

Remove the O-ring from the starter yoke   

c

Using a screwdriver, hold the spring back and disconnect the brush from the brush holder

Disconnect the 4 brushes and remove the brush holder

REMOVE STARTER ARMATURE ASSEMBLY 

a

Remove the starter armature from the starter yoke   

INSPECTION

INSPECT STARTER ASSEMBLY 

a

Perform pull-in test  

1

Remove the nut, then disconnect the field coil lead wire from terminal C   

2

Connect the battery to the magnetic switch as shown  Check that the clutch pinion gear 
moves outward  

If the clutch pinion gear does not move, replace the magnet starter switch assembly

NOTE:

Check that the positive (+) lead wires are not grounded.

NOTE:

The following tests must be done within 3 to 5 seconds to prevent the coil 
from burning out.
