INSPECTION PROCEDURE 30

Fuel pump (low pressure) system

Probable cause

The engine-ECU <M/T> or engine-A/T-ECU <A/T> turns on the fuel pump relay
while the engine is cranking or running, and supplies power source to the fuel pump
(low pressure).



Malfunction of the fuel pump relay



Malfunction of the fuel pump (low pressure)



Open circuit or short-circuited harness wire in the
fuel pump (low pressure) circuit, or poor connector
contact



Malfunction of the engine-ECU <M/T>



Malfunction of the engine-A/T-ECU <A/T>

Replace the fuel pump (low pressure).

OK

Check trouble symptom.

OK

Check the following connector:
D-13

Repair

Check trouble symptom.

NG

Check the harness wire between the
fuel pump (low pressure) and earth,
and repair if necessary.

Check the harness wire between the
fuel pump relay and fuel pump (low
pressure), and repair if necessary.

Check the following connectors:

Measure at fuel pump (low pressure)
connector D-13.



Disconnect the connector, and
measure at the harness side.

(1) Voltage between terminal 5 and

earth (Ignition switch: ON)
OK: System voltage

(2) Continuity between 4 and earth

OK: Continuity

OK

Check trouble symptom.

Replace the engine-ECU <M/T> or en-
gine-A/T-ECU <A/T>.

Check the following connector:
B-84

Repair

Measure at engine-ECU connector
B-84 <M/T> or engine-A/T-ECU con-
nector B-84 <A/T>.



Disconnect the connector, and
measure at the harness side.



Short circuit between terminal 21
and earth (Ignition switch: ON)
OK: The fuel pump operates (its

operation sound can be
heard).

Check trouble symptom.

Check the harness wire between the
fuel pump relay and engine-ECU <M/T>
or engine-A/T-ECU <A/T>, and repair
if necessary.

Measure at engine-ECU connector
B-84 <M/T> or engine-A/T-ECU con-
nector B-84 <A/T>.



Disconnect the connector, and
measure at the harness side.



Voltage between terminal 21 and
earth (Ignition switch: ON)
OK: System voltage

Check the following connector:
B-27

Repair

OK

Check the ignition switch. (Refer to
GROUP 54 – Ignition Switch.)

Check trouble symptom.

Check the harness wire between the
fuel pump relay and ignition switch.

Check the following connectors:

Disconnect the connector, and
measure at the harness side.

Power steering fluid pressure switch system

Probable cause

The power steering fluid pressure switch sends a signal to the engine-ECU <M/T>
or engine-A/T-ECU <A/T> according to power steering load.
Based on this signal, the engine-ECU <M/T> or engine-A/T-ECU <A/T> controls
the throttle control servo so that idle speed increases when the power steering is
in operation.



Malfunction of the power steering fluid pressure switch



Open circuit or short-circuited harness wire in the
power steering fluid pressure switch circuit, or poor
connector contact



Malfunction of the engine-ECU <M/T>



Malfunction of the engine-A/T-ECU <A/T>

Repair

Replace the engine-ECU <M/T> or engine-A/T-ECU <A/T>.

Check the harness wire between the engine-ECU <M/T> or engine-
A/T-ECU <A/T> and power steering fluid pressure switch.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE 32

A/C switch and A/C relay system

Probable cause

If the engine-ECU receives a ‘A/C on’ signal, it operates the throttle control servo
and A/C compressor magnetic clutch so that idle speed increases.



Malfunction of the A/C control system



Malfunction of the A/C switch



Open circuit or short-circuited harness wire in the
A/C switch circuit, or poor connector contact



Malfunction of the engine-ECU <M/T>



Malfunction of the engine-A/T-ECU <A/T>

Check trouble symptom.

Replace the engine-ECU <M/T> or engine-A/T-ECU <A/T>.

Service the A/C compressor relay. (Refer to GROUP 55 – On-ve-
hicle Service.)

engine-A/T-ECU connectors B-84, B-86 <A/T>.



Disconnect the connector, and measure at the harness side.



Voltage between terminals 20, 83 and earth

(A/C switch: OFF)
System voltage
(A/C switch: ON)



Connect terminal 20 to earth.
(Ignition switch: ON, A/C switch: ON)
OK: A/C compressor clutch turns on.

B-84, B-87 <M/T>,  B-84, B-86 <A/T>

Check the A/C system. (Refer to GROUP 55 – On-vehicle Service.)

M/T oil temperature sensor system

Probable cause

This sensor inputs the manual transmission oil temperature to the engine-ECU.
The engine-ECU uses this input to control the idle speed control servo so that
the idle speed is increased when the manual transmission oil temperature
becomes low.



Malfunction of the M/T oil temperature sensor



Open circuit or short-circuited harness wire in the
M/T oil temperature sensor circuit



Malfunction of the engine-ECU

Check the M/T oil temperature sensor. (Refer to GROUP 22 –
On-vehicle Service.)

Measure at the M/T oil temperature sensor connector A-80.



Disconnect the connector, and measure at the harness
side.



Voltage between 1 and earth (Ignition switch: ON)
OK: 4.8  – 5.2 V



Continuity between 2 and earth
OK: Continuity

Stop lamp switch system

Probable cause

The engine-ECU <M/T> or engine-A/T-ECU <A/T> determines whether the brake
pedal is depressed or not, by means of the stop lamp switch input signal.



Malfunction of the stop lamp switch



Open circuit or short-circuited harness wire in the
stop lamp circuit, or poor connector contact



Malfunction of the engine-ECU <M/T>



Malfunction of the engine-A/T-ECU <A/T>

Replace the engine-ECU <M/T> or engine-A/T-ECU <A/T>.

Check trouble symptom.

Check the following connector: B-86 <M/T>, B-87 <A/T>

OK: 0  – 3 V (when the brake pedal is not depressed)

System voltage (when the brake pedal is depressed)

Check the harness wire between the battery and stop lamp switch.

Check trouble symptom.

Check the following connector: B-43

Measure at stop lamp switch connector B-39.



Disconnect the connector, and measure at the harness side.

OK: System voltage

Check the stop lamp switch. (Refer to GROUP 35 – Brake Pedal.)

INSPECTION PROCEDURE 35

Small lamp switch system

Probable cause

The engine-ECU <M/T> or engine-A/T-ECU <A/T> determines whether the
small lamp switch is on or off. According to that information, the engine-ECU
<M/T> or engine-A/T-ECU <A/T> controls alternator output current when the
vehicle is started.



Improper connector contact, open circuit or
short-circuited harness wire in the taillamp circuit



Malfunction of the engine-ECU <M/T>



Malfunction of the engine-A/T-ECU <A/T>

NG

Replace the engine-ECU <M/T> or engine-A/T-ECU <A/T>.

OK

Check the trouble symptoms.

OK

Check the following connectors: B-87 <M/T>, B-86 <A/T>

NG

Repair

Measure at the engine-ECU connector B-87 <M/T> or 
engine-A/T-ECU connector B-86 <A/T>.



Disconnect the connector, and measure at the harness
side.



Voltage between 88 <M/T>, 86 <A/T> and earth
(Lighting switch: ON)
OK: System voltage

NG
