TROUBLESHOOTING

MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MPI) <4G1>

13B-143

OPERATION

• Power is supplied to the crank angle sensor (ter-

minal No. 1) by way of the engine control relay
(terminal No. 4) and is earthed to the engine-ECU
(terminal No. 28) through the crank angle sensor
(terminal No. 3).

• A power voltage of 5 V is applied to the crank

angle sensor (terminal No. 2) from the
engine-ECU (terminal No. 13).

FUNCTION

• The crank angle sensor detects crankshaft angu-

lar position and provides the engine-ECU with a
pulse signal.

• Using the signal, the engine-ECU performs injec-

tor and other control.

TROUBLE JUDGEMENT

Check Condition

• Ignition switch is in "ON" position.

Judgement Criterions

• Pulse signal from crank angle sensor continues

264 times and engine speed is less than 440
r/min.

• Crank angle sensor signal pattern is abnormal.

Check Condition

• Ignition switch is in "ON" position.

Judgement Criterion

• Crank angle sensor signal pattern is not normal

for 4 seconds and engine speed is more than 440
r/min.

Check Condition

• While engine is being cranked.

Judgement Criterion

• Crank angle sensor output voltage does not vary

for 4 seconds (no pulse signal input).

PROBABLE CAUSES

• Failed crank angle sensor

• Open/short circuit in or damage to crank angle

sensor circuit, or loose connector contact

• Failed engine-ECU

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. M.U.T.-III data list

• Refer to Data List Reference Table

P.13B-335

.

a. Item 22: Crank angle sensor

Q: Is the check result normal?

YES :

Intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP

00

− How to Use

Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points

−

How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions

P.00-13

).

NO :

Go to Step 2.

STEP 2. Connector check: A-133 crank angle
sensor intermediate connector

Q: Is the check result normal?

YES :

Go to Step 3.

NO :

Repair or replace.

STEP 3. Perform voltage measurement at A-133
crank angle sensor intermediate connector.

Disconnect the connector, and measure at harness

side.

• Ignition switch: ON

• Voltage between terminal No. 2 and earth.

OK: 4.9

 5.1 V

Q: Is the check result normal?

STEP 4. Perform voltage measurement at A-114
engine-ECU connector.

Disconnect engine-ECU connector, and connect

special tool power plant ECU check harness
(MB991987), and then measure the voltage on
the check connector.

• Disconnect the A-133 crank angle sensor inter-

mediate connector.

• Ignition switch: ON

• Voltage between terminal No. 13 and earth.

OK: 4.9

 5.1 V

Q: Is the check result normal?

YES :

Go to Step 5.

NO :

Go to Step 6.

STEP 5. Connector check: A-114 engine-ECU
connector

Q: Is the check result normal?

YES :

Check and repair the harness between

A-133 (terminal No. 2) crank angle sensor
intermediate connector and A-114 (terminal
No. 13) engine-ECU connector.

• Check output line for open circuit.

NO :

Repair or replace.
