7-2. Steps to take in an emergency

5

Lower the vehicle.

6

Securely tighten the wheel bolts
two or three times in the order
shown in the illustration using a
wheel bolt wrench.

Tightening torque:

103 ft•lbf (140 N•m, 14.3 kgf•m)

7

Stow the flat tire, tire jack and all
tools.

The spare tire

The spare tire is identified by the label

“TEMPORARY USE ONLY” on the tire

sidewall.

Use the spare tire temporarily, and only in

an emergency.

Make sure to check the tire inflation pres-

sure of the spare tire. (

P.570)

When using the spare tire

As the spare tire is not equipped with a tire

pressure warning valve and transmitter, low

inflation pressure of the spare tire will not be

indicated by the tire pressure warning sys-

tem. Also, if you replace the spare tire after

the tire pressure warning light comes on,

the light remains on.

When the spare tire is equipped

The vehicle becomes lower when driving

with the spare tire compared to when driv-

ing with standard tires.

If you have a flat front tire on a road cov-

ered with snow or ice

Install the spare tire on one of the rear

wheels of the vehicle. Perform the following

steps and fit tire chains to the front tires:

1

Replace a rear tire with the spare tire.

2

Replace the flat front tire with the tire

removed from the rear of the vehicle.

3

Fit tire chains to the front tires.

WARNING

Installing the spare tire

Failure to follow these precautions could

cause the wheel bolts to loosen and the

tire to fall off, resulting in death or serious

injury.

The contact surfaces of the wheel bolt

and wheel are designed specifically to

fit together. When using wheels that

were installed when the vehicle was

shipped from the factory, use special-

ized Lexus genuine wheel bolts. Do

not use wheel bolts designed for other

models, model years or types even if

they are Lexus genuine parts. If the

vehicle does not have wheels that were

installed to the vehicle when it was

shipped from the factory, the fac-

tory-installed wheel bolts may not be

appropriate for the wheel. Contact

either the retailer where the wheels

were purchased or the manufacturer

of the wheels for proper installation

advice.

WARNING

Never apply oil or grease to the wheel

bolts or their contact surface on the

wheel .

Doing so may cause the wheel bolts to

be tightened excessively, leading to

damage to the wheel bolts, the

threaded portion the wheel bolts install

to

, or the wheel.

Remove any oil or grease that has

adhered when installing the wheel

bolts.

Steel wheel

Aluminum wheel

After replacing a tire, check the tight-

ening torque as soon as possible.

Do not attach a heavily damaged

wheel ornament, as it may fly off the

wheel while the vehicle is moving.

If a wheel bolt hole in a wheel or the

threads of a wheel bolt or the wheel

hub are deformed, cracked, rusty or

otherwise damaged, have the vehicle

inspected by your Lexus dealer.

A

B

When tightening the wheel bolts

Do not tighten the wheel bolts exces-

sively. Doing so may cause the wheel

bolts, the threads of the wheel hub, or the

wheel to be damaged.

Guide pin

When removing or installing a tire, make

sure to use the guide pin.

Also, the guide pin is made of resin. It

may be damaged if the wheel is placed

anywhere other than

 or if a large

amount of force is applied to the guide

pin.

When using the spare tire

Remember that the spare tire provided

is specifically designed for use with

your vehicle. Do not use your spare

tire on another vehicle.

Do not use more than one spare tire

simultaneously.

Replace the spare tire with a standard

tire as soon as possible.

Avoid sudden acceleration, abrupt

steering, sudden braking and shifting

operations that cause sudden engine

braking.

When the spare tire is attached

The vehicle speed may not be correctly

detected, and the following systems may

not operate correctly:

• ABS & Brake assist

• VSC

• TRAC

Speed limit when using the spare tire

Do not drive at speeds in excess of 50

mph (80 km/h) when a spare tire is

installed on the vehicle.

The spare tire is not designed for driving

at high speeds. Failure to observe this

precaution may lead to an accident caus-

ing death or serious injury.

After using the tools and jack

Before driving, make sure all the tools

and jack are securely in place in their

storage location to reduce the possibility

of personal injury during a collision or

sudden braking.

NOTICE

Be careful when driving over bumps

with the spare tire installed on the

vehicle

The vehicle becomes lower when driving

with the spare tire compared to when

driving with standard tires. Be careful

when driving over uneven road surfaces.

Driving with tire chains and the spare

tire

Do not fit tire chains to the spare tire.

Tire chains may damage the vehicle body

and adversely affect driving perfor-

mance.

When replacing the tires

When removing or fitting the wheels,

tires or the tire pressure warning valve

and transmitter, contact your Lexus

dealer as the tire pressure warning valve

and transmitter may be damaged if not

handled correctly.

7-2. Steps to take in an emergency

Starting the hybrid system when the

12-volt battery is discharged

The hybrid system cannot be started by

push-starting.

If the doors cannot be unlocked using

the smart access system with push-but-

ton start or wireless remote control

The doors can be opened by enabling its

respective manual release handle opera-

tion. (

P.547)

Locking the doors after the 12-volt bat-

tery was discharged

The doors cannot be locked using the smart

access system with push-button start or

wireless remote control.
By locking the door using the mechanical

key, the operation of the manual release

handle can be disabled.

Driver’s door

1

Insert a plastic card, etc. into the gap in

the door handle to pry up the cover.

To avoid damage, do not apply excessive

force to the cover.

2

Remove the cover by pressing it on the

rear.

3

Using the mechanical key, turn the lock

cylinder to the unlock side to enable the

manual release handle operation.

4

Check that the door cannot be opened.

Doors other than the driver’s door

1

Open the door. Using the mechanical

key, slide the cover in the direction

shown in the illustration.

To avoid damage, do not apply excessive

force to the cover.

2

Insert the mechanical key into the open-

ing.

3

Remove the mechanical key and slide

the cover back to its original position.

 ari

ses

4

Check that all of the doors cannot be

opened.

To prevent 12-volt battery discharge

Turn off the headlights and the audio sys-

tem while the hybrid system is off.

Turn off any unnecessary electrical com-

ponents when the vehicle is running at a

low speed for an extended period, such

as in heavy traffic.

When the 12-volt battery is removed or

discharged

Information stored in the ECU is cleared.

When the 12-volt battery is depleted,

have the vehicle inspected at your Lexus

dealer.

Some systems may require initialization.

(

P.602)

When removing the 12-volt battery ter-

minals

When the 12-volt battery terminals are

removed, the information stored in the

ECU is cleared. Before removing the

12-volt battery terminals, contact your

Lexus dealer.

If a 12-volt battery terminal is discon-

nected, the doors will not be able to be

opened using the door opener switches

and the electronic key may become

trapped in the vehicle

To prevent the electronic key (mechanical

key) from being locked inside the vehicle,

make sure to remove it from the vehicle

before disconnecting a 12-volt battery ter-

minal.

If the electronic key (mechanical key) is

to be left in the vehicle, make sure to

open a window so an inside manual

release handle can be operated.

Charging the 12-volt battery

The electricity stored in the 12-volt battery

will discharge gradually even when the

vehicle is not in use, due to natural dis-

charge and the draining effects of certain

electrical appliances. If the vehicle is left for

a long time, the 12-volt battery may dis-

charge, and the hybrid system may be

unable to start. (The 12-volt battery

recharges automatically while the hybrid

system is operating.)

When recharging or replacing the

12-volt battery

In some cases, it may not be possible to

unlock the doors using the smart access

system with push-button start when the

12-volt battery is discharged. Use the

wireless remote control or the mechani-

cal key to lock or unlock the doors.

The hybrid system may not start on the

first attempt after the 12-volt battery has

recharged but will start normally after the

second attempt. This is not a malfunction.

The power switch mode is memorized by

the vehicle. When the 12-volt battery is

reconnected, the system will return to the

mode it was in before the 12-volt battery

was discharged. Before disconnecting

the 12-volt battery, turn the power switch

off.

If you are unsure what mode the power

switch was in before the 12-volt battery

discharged, be especially careful when

reconnecting the 12-volt battery.

If the 12-volt battery discharges, it may

7-2. Steps to take in an emergency

When replacing the 12-volt battery

Use a Central Degassing type 12-volt

battery (European Regulations).

RX500h: Use a 12-volt battery that the

case size is same as the previous one

(LN3), 20 hour rate capacity (20HR) is

equivalent (70Ah) or greater, and perfor-

mance rating (CCA) is equivalent

(603A) or greater.

RX350h: Use a 12-volt battery that the

case size is same as the previous one

(LN2), 20 hour rate capacity (20HR) is

equivalent (60Ah) or greater, and per-

formance rating (CCA) is equivalent

(563A) or greater.

• If the sizes differ, the 12-volt battery can-

not be properly secured.

• If the 20 hour rate capacity is low, even if

the time period where the vehicle is not

used is a short time, the 12-volt battery

may discharge and the hybrid system

may not be able to start.

Use a 12-volt battery with a handle. If a

12-volt battery without a handle is used,

removal is more difficult.

After replacing, firmly attach the follow-

ing items to the exhaust hole of the

12-volt battery.

• Use the exhaust hose that was attached

to the 12-volt battery before replacing

and confirm that it is firmly connected to

the hole section of the vehicle.

• Use the exhaust hole plug included with

the 12-volt battery replaced or the one

installed on the 12-volt battery prior to

the replacement. (Depending on the

12-volt battery to be replaced, the

exhaust hole may be plugged.)

WARNING

When removing the 12-volt battery

terminals

Always remove the negative (-) terminal

first. If the positive (+) terminal contacts

any metal in the surrounding area when

the positive (+) terminal is removed, a

spark may occur, leading to a fire in addi-

tion to electrical shocks and death or

serious injury.

Avoiding 12-volt battery fires or

explosions

Observe the following precautions to

prevent accidentally igniting the flamma-

ble gas that may be emitted from the

12-volt battery:

Make sure each jumper cable is con-

nected to the correct terminal and that

it is not unintentionally in contact with

any other than the intended terminal.

WARNING

Do not allow the other end of the

jumper cable connected to the “+” ter-

minal to come into contact with any

other parts or metal surfaces in the

area, such as brackets or unpainted

metal.

Do not allow the + and - clamps of the

jumper cables to come into contact

with each other.

Do not smoke, use matches, cigarette

lighters or allow open flame near the

12-volt battery.

12-volt battery precautions

The 12-volt battery contains poisonous

and corrosive acidic electrolyte, while

related parts contain lead and lead com-

pounds. Observe the following precau-

tions when handling the 12-volt battery:

When working with the 12-volt battery,

always wear safety glasses and take

care not to allow any battery fluids

(acid) to come into contact with skin,

clothing or the vehicle body.

Do not lean over the 12-volt battery.

In the event that battery fluid comes

into contact with the skin or eyes,

immediately wash the affected area

with water and seek medical attention.

Place a wet sponge or cloth over the

affected area until medical attention

can be received.

Always wash your hands after handling

the 12-volt battery support, terminals,

and other battery-related parts.

Do not allow children near the 12-volt

battery.

After recharging the 12-volt battery

Have the 12-volt battery inspected at

your Lexus dealer as soon as possible.

If the 12-volt battery is deteriorating, con-

tinued use may cause the 12-volt battery

to emit a malodorous gas, which may be

detrimental to the health of passengers.

When replacing the 12-volt battery

When the vent plug and indicator are

close to the hold down clamp, the bat-

tery fluid (sulfuric acid) may leak.

For information regarding 12-volt bat-

tery replacement, contact your Lexus

dealer.

After replacing, securely attach the

exhaust hose and exhaust hole plug to

the exhaust hole of the replaced

12-volt battery. If not properly installed,

gases (hydrogen) may leak into the

vehicle interior, and there is the possi-

ble danger of the gas igniting and

exploding.

When disconnecting the 12-volt bat-

tery

Do not disconnect the negative (-) termi-

nal on the body side. The disconnected

negative (-) terminal may touch the posi-

tive (+) terminal, which may cause a short

and result in death or serious injury.

NOTICE

When handling jumper cables

When connecting the jumper cables,

ensure that they do not become entan-

gled in the cooling fan or belt.

When connecting jumper cables

Make sure to connect jumper cables to

the specified terminals and connecting

point. Failure to do so may adversely

affect the electronic devices or damage

to them.

To prevent damaging the vehicle

The exclusive jump starting terminal is to

be used when charging the 12-volt bat-

tery from another vehicle in an emer-

gency. It cannot be used to jump start

another vehicle.

Engine oil selection (RX350h)

“Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” is used in
your Lexus vehicle. Use Lexus
approved “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil”
or equivalent to satisfy the following
grade and viscosity.
Oil grade: ILSAC GF-6B multigrade
engine oil
Recommended viscosity: SAE 0W-16
SAE 0W-16 is the best choice for good
fuel economy and good starting in cold
weather.
If SAE 0W-16 is not available, SAE
0W-20 oil may be used. However, it
must be replaced with SAE 0W-16 at
the next oil change.

Outside temperature

Oil viscosity (0W-16 is explained here
as an example):
• The 0W in 0W-16 indicates the

characteristic of the oil which allows
cold startability. Oils with a lower
value before the W allow for easier
starting of the engine in cold
weather.

• The 16 in 0W-16 indicates the vis-

cosity characteristic of the oil when
the oil is at high temperature. An oil
with a higher viscosity (one with a
higher value) may be better suited if
the vehicle is operated at high
speeds, or under extreme load con-
ditions.

How to read oil container label:
API registered marks is added to some
oil containers to help you select the oil
you should use.
