Except for India: In some situations such as

when the vehicle is used frequently or in

heavy traffic or dusty areas, the air intake fil-

ters may need to be cleaned more regu-

larly. For details, refer to “Lexus Service

Booklet” or “Lexus Warranty Booklet”.
For India: In some situations such as when

the vehicle is used frequently or in heavy

traffic or dusty areas, the air intake filters

may need to be cleaned more regularly. For

details, refer to the maintenance schedule.

(

P.316)

Q

Air intake vents maintenance

O

If the vehicle is driven with the air intake

vents clogged, charging/discharging of

the hybrid battery (traction battery) may

become limited and the fuel consumption

may increase.

O

Depending on the conditions under

which the vehicle is used, the air intake

vents may need to be cleaned more reg-

ularly.

Q

Cleaning the air intake vents

O

Dust in the air intake vents may interfere

with the cooling of the hybrid battery

(traction battery). If charging/discharg-

ing of the hybrid battery (traction battery)

becomes limited, the distance that the

vehicle can be driven using the electric

motor (traction motor) may be reduced

and the fuel economy may be reduced.

Inspect and clean the air intake vents

periodically.

O

Improper handling may result in damage

to the air intake vent covers or filters. If

you have any concerns about cleaning

the filters, contact any authorized Lexus

retailer or Lexus authorized repairer, or

any reliable repairer.

O

The necessary cleaning interval of the air

intake vents will differ according to the

vehicle usage environment.

Q

If “Maintenance Required for Traction

battery Cooling Parts See owner’s man-

ual” is displayed on the multi-informa-

tion display

O

If this warning message is displayed on

the multi-information display, remove the

air intake vent covers and clean the fil-

ters. (

P.308)

O

After cleaning the air intake vents, start

the hybrid system and check that the

warning message is no longer displayed.

After the hybrid system is started, it may

be necessary to drive the vehicle up to

approximately 20 minutes before the

warning message disappears. If the warn-

ing message does not disappear after

driving for appropriately 20 minutes,

have the vehicle inspected by any autho-

rized Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized

repairer, or any reliable repairer.

WARNING

Q

When cleaning the air intake

vents/filters

O

Do not use water or other liquids to

clean the air intake vents/filters. If

water is applied to the hybrid battery

(traction battery) or other compo-

nents, a malfunction or fire may occur.

O

When the air intake vent covers,

located under the rear seats, are to be

removed, make sure to turn the power

switch off to stop the hybrid system.

310

6-1. Maintenance and care

Remove dirt using a water-damp-
ened soft cloth or synthetic chamois.

Wipe the surface with a dry soft
cloth to remove any remaining
moisture.

Q

Cleaning the areas with satin-finish

metal accents

The metal areas use a layer of real metal for

the surface. It is necessary to clean them

regularly. If dirty areas are left uncleaned

for long periods of time, they may be diffi-

cult to clean.

Remove dirt and dust using a vac-
uum cleaner.

Wipe off any excess dirt and dust
with a soft cloth dampened with
diluted detergent.

Use a diluted water solution of approxi-
mately 5% neutral wool detergent.

Wring out any excess water from
the cloth and thoroughly wipe off all
remaining traces of detergent.

NOTICE

Q

When cleaning the air intake vents

When cleaning the air intake vents, make

sure to only use a vacuum to suck out

dust and clogs. If a compressed air blow

gun, etc. is used to blow out dust and

clogs, the dust or clogs may be pushed

into the air intake vents, which may affect

the performance of the hybrid battery

(traction battery) and cause a malfunc-

tion.

Q

To prevent damage to the vehicle

O

Do not allow water or foreign matter

to enter the air intake vents when the

cover is removed.

O

Carefully handle the removed filters so

that it will not be damaged.

If the filters are damaged, have them

replaced with new filters by any autho-

rized Lexus retailer or Lexus autho-

rized repairer, or any reliable repairer.

O

Make sure to reinstall the filters and

cover to their original positions after

cleaning.

O

Do not install anything to the air intake

vents other than the exclusive filters for

this vehicle or use the vehicle without

the filters installed.

Q

If “Maintenance Required for Trac-

tion battery Cooling Parts See

owner’s manual” is displayed on the

multi-information display

If the vehicle is continuously driven with

the warning message (indicating that

charging/discharging of the hybrid bat-

tery [traction battery] may become lim-

ited) displayed, the hybrid battery

(traction battery) may malfunction. If the

warning message is displayed, clean the

air intake vents immediately.

Q

Caring for leather areas

Lexus recommends cleaning the interior of

the vehicle at least twice a year to maintain

the quality of the vehicle’s interior.

Remove dirt and dust using a vac-
uum cleaner.

Wipe it off with a soft cloth damp-
ened with neutral detergent diluted

If any substance such as mud or cof-
fee dries and becomes stuck to the
surface, use a lint brush or the like to
lightly brush the dirty area and
remove the substance.
Then, it is recommended to clean
the dried substance from the sur-
face using a vacuum cleaner.

For oil-based substances, use a dry
cloth or tissue paper to wipe off the
substance as much as possible,
while being careful not to spread it.

If the substance still cannot be
removed, use the following procedure
to remove it.

1

Liquid substances: Soak a cloth in
lukewarm water (approximately
40°C [104°F]), wring it out thor-
oughly and then wipe the dirty area
from the outside inward.

Wipe carefully so that the pile is not

disheveled. Be sure to prepare a clean

cloth and use the clean portion of it to

clean the surface.
Oil-based substances: Dab a cloth soaked

in benzene, lukewarm water or pure ethyl

alcohol (for drinking) within the dirty area

from the outside inward, and then dab a

dry cloth on the dirty area to absorb the

substance.

2

If the pile on the surface is dishev-
eled, use a lint brush or the like to
lightly brush the surface, and then
allow the surface to dry completely.

Q

To remove substances adhered to the

pile

To clean dust or other adhered substances,

use a lint brush or the like to lightly brush

the area and remove the substance. If the

substance still cannot be removed, use

adhesive tape to remove it.

NOTICE

Q

Q

Where to go for maintenance service?

In order to maintain your vehicle in the best

possible condition, Lexus recommends that

maintenance service operations as well as

other inspections and repairs be carried out

by authorized Lexus retailer or Lexus

authorized repairer, or any reliable repair-

ers. For repairs and services covered by

your warranty, please visit an authorized

Lexus retailer or repairer, who will use gen-

uine Lexus parts in repairing any difficulties

you may encounter. There can also be

advantages in utilizing authorized Lexus

retailers or repairers for non-warranty

repairs and services, as members of the

Lexus network will be able to expertly assist

you with any difficulties you may encounter.
Your Lexus retailer or Lexus authorized

repairer, or any reliable repairer will per-

form all of the scheduled maintenance on

your vehicle reliably and economically due

to their experience with Lexus vehicles.

Scheduled maintenance should be
performed at specified intervals
according to the maintenance sched-
ule.

For details about maintenance items and
schedules, refer to the “Lexus Service
Booklet” or “Lexus Warranty Booklet”.

What about do-it-yourself mainte-
nance?

Many of the maintenance items are easy to
do yourself if you have a little mechanical
ability and a few basic automotive tools.
Note, however, that some maintenance
tasks require special tools and skills. These
are best performed by qualified techni-
cians. Even if you’re an experienced do-it-
yourself mechanic, we recommend that
repairs and maintenance be conducted by
any authorized Lexus retailer or Lexus
authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer. Any authorized Lexus retailer or
repairer will keep a record of maintenance,
which could be useful should you ever
require Warranty Service. Should you
choose to select a qualified and equipped
professional other than an authorized
Lexus repairer to service or maintain your
vehicle, we recommend that you request
that a record of maintenance be kept.

Q

Does your vehicle need repairs?

performed at specified intervals
according to the maintenance
schedule.

The interval for scheduled maintenance is
determined by the odometer reading or
the time interval, whichever comes first,
shown in the schedule.
Maintenance beyond the last period
should be performed at the same intervals.

Where to go for maintenance ser-

It makes good sense to take your vehicle to
your local Lexus dealer for maintenance
service as well as other inspections and
repairs.

Lexus technicians are well-trained special-
ists receiving the latest service information
through technical bulletins, service tips and
in-dealership training programs. They
learn to work on Lexus before they work
on your vehicle, rather than while they are
working on it. Doesn’t that seem like the
best way?
Your Lexus dealer has invested a lot of
money in special Lexus tools and service
equipment. It helps them to do the job bet-
ter and at less cost.
Your Lexus dealer’s service department
will perform all of the scheduled mainte-
nance on your vehicle reliably and eco-
nomically.
Rubber hoses (for cooling and heater sys-
tem, brake system and fuel system) should
be inspected by a qualified technician
according to the Lexus maintenance
schedule.
Rubber hoses are particularly important
maintenance items. Have any deteriorated
or damaged hoses replaced immediately.
Note that rubber hoses will deteriorate
with age, resulting in swelling, chafing or
cracking.

What about do-it-yourself mainte-
nance?

Many of the maintenance items are easy to
do yourself if you have a little mechanical
ability and a few basic automotive tools.
Simple instructions for how to perform
them are presented in this section.
Note, however, that some maintenance

record could be helpful should you ever
require Warranty Service.

Scheduled maintenance (For India)

Perform maintenance by the schedule as follows:

Maintenance schedule requirements

Your vehicle needs to be serviced according to the normal maintenance schedule. (See
“Maintenance schedule”.)

If you mainly operate your vehicle under one or more of the special operating conditions
below, some of the maintenance schedule items need to be serviced more frequently in
order to keep your vehicle in good condition. (See “Additional maintenance schedule”.)

A. Road Conditions
1. Operating on rough or muddy roads, or
roads with melted snow or waterlogged
roads.
2. Operating on dusty roads. (Roads in
areas where their pavement rate is low, or a
cloud of dust often arises and the air is dry.)

B. Driving Conditions
1. Heavily loaded vehicle. (Example: Using a
camper, using a car top carrier, etc.)
2. Extensive idling and/or low speed driving
for a long distance such as police, profes-
sional / private use like taxi or door-to-door
delivery use.
3. Continuous high speed driving (80% or
more of maximum vehicle speed) for over 2
hours.

6-3. Do-it-yourself maintenance

WARNING

The engine compartment contains many

mechanisms and fluids that may move

suddenly, become hot, or become elec-

trically energized. To avoid death or seri-

ous injury, observe the following

precautions.

Q

When working on the engine com-

partment

O

LC500h: Make sure that the “IGNI-

TION ON” on the multi-information

display and the “READY” indicator are

both off.

O

Keep hands, clothing and tools away

from the moving fan and engine drive

belt.

O

LC500: Be careful not to touch the

engine, radiator, exhaust manifold, etc.

right after driving as they may be hot.

Oil and other fluids may also be hot.

LC500h: Be careful not to touch the

engine, power control unit, radiator,

exhaust manifold, etc. right after driv-

ing as they may be hot. Oil and other

fluids may also be hot.

O

Do not leave anything that may burn

easily, such as paper and rags, in the

engine compartment.

O

Do not smoke, cause sparks or expose

an open flame to fuel. Fuel fumes are

flammable.

O

Take care because brake fluid can

harm your hands or eyes and damage

painted surfaces. If fluid gets on your

hands or in your eyes, flush the

affected area with clean water imme-

diately.

If you still experience discomfort, con-

sult a doctor.

Q

When working near the electric cool-

ing fan or radiator grille

Be sure the engine switch <power

switch> is off.

With the engine switch <power switch> in

IGNITION ON mode <ON mode>, the

electric cooling fan may automatically

start to run if the air conditioning is on

and/or the coolant temperature is high.

(

P.330)

Q

Safety glasses

Wear safety glasses to prevent flying or

falling material, fluid spray, etc. from get-

ting in your eyes.

NOTICE

Q

If you remove the air cleaner filter

Driving with the air cleaner filter

removed may cause excessive engine

wear due to dirt in the air.

Q

If the fluid level is low or high

It is normal for the brake fluid level to go

down slightly as the brake pads wear or

when the fluid level in the accumulator is

high.

If the reservoir needs frequent refilling, it

may indicate a serious problem.
