connect or end the call.  

Is a connection made with OnStar(R)?

IMPORTANT:

It is important to have the vehicle in 
an open outside area where a 
cellular call can be successfully 
placed and Global Positioning 
System (GPS) data can be received 
from satellites.

1. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Cellular Communication before using the Symptom Tables in 

order to verify that all of the following are true: 

z

There are no DTCs set.  

z

The control module can communicate via the serial data link.  

2. Review the system operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to OnStar 

Description and Operation .  

Visual/Physical Inspection 

z

Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the system. Refer to Checking 
Aftermarket Accessories
 in Wiring Systems.  

z

Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could 
cause the symptom.  

Intermittent 

Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Refer to Testing for 
Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections
 in Wiring Systems.

1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.  

2. Press each OnStar(R) button one at a time.  

Are all buttons inoperative?

IMPORTANT:

Contact the OnStar(R) Call Center first before 
pressing the emergency button in order to notify 
them of the test.

1. Turn OFF the ignition.  

2. Disconnect the OnStar(R) button assembly.  

3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.  

4. Measure the voltage from the Keypad Supply 

Voltage circuit to a good ground.  

Does the voltage measure greater than the specified 
value?

9 V

Test the Keypad Supply Voltage circuit for an open 
or short. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring
