GENERAL INFORMATION
This Parts Catalog has been prepared for your convenience when ordering parts for 1971 to 1984 FX Models, except the FXR and FXST models which are covered in separate catalogs. Wherever possible, parts are shown in assembly breakdown sequence. Index numbers shown in the illustrations correspond to index numbers in parts lists. Consult the illustrations when ordering parts so you are sure to get what you want. In most cases, only the latest parts are shown in the illustrations, however, parts lists cover some parts used as early as 1971.

Number in parenthesis following description of part is the quantity needed for complete assembly shown in illustration. If there is no number in parenthesis, only one is used.

Prices of parts listed in this catalog are published separately in the latest RETAIL PRICE LIST.

NOTE: N/A following description of part indicates part is no longer available from the factory. Do not attempt to order these parts from Harley-Davidson Motor Co., Inc.

The following instructions should be followed carefully when ordering parts:

• Specify the correct part number for each item. Check the “Used On” column of the parts list which shows the model on which the part fits. Whenever in doubt, refer to the Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N.) stamped on the engine crankcase.

1.1971 thru 1980: Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N.) is located on the engine right crankcase and is the same as the number located on the frame steering head. (See chart on this page.)

2. 1981 and later: A 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number is stamped on the frame steering head and frame downtube label. An abbreviated V.I.N. is stamped on the engine right crankcase (left crankcase — Late 1983 and later). Refer to inside back cover for chart.

The V.I.N. (Vehicle Identification Number) for 1971 thru 1980 FX models are as follows:

Order form, Part No. 99514-76, must be used for engines and crankcases. The use of these forms will enable us to fill and ship your order more promptly. These forms are furnished free of charge upon request.

• Do not order motorcycles or advertising material on Parts Order Forms. Write nothing on the order form except the order itself, as any other correspondence will not be answered until the order is shipped and billed.
