(6) Remove shifter shaft with knob and body.
(7) Remove floor console bezel and parking brake
body.
(8) Remove eight screws and disconnect one elec-
trical connector to center console and remove console
from vehicle.
(9) Remove six screws and disconnect one electri-
cal connector to instrument panel center bezel and
remove bezel from vehicle.
(10) Using a trim stick (special tool #C-4755) or
equivalent, gently pry out on cluster bezel.
(11) Disconnect
one
electrical
connector
and
remove bezel from instrument panel.
(12) Remove radio and electrical connections.
(13) Remove two electrical connectors to Occupant
Restraint Controller (ORC).
(14) From inside center stack area, remove four
retaining bolts to ORC and remove from floor tunnel.
INSTALLATION
(1) Place Occupant Restraint Controller into center
stack area and place in mounting location.
WARNING:
MAKE
SURE
ORC
IS
POSITIONED
PROPERLY ON THE FLOOR TUNNEL WITH THE
ARROW POINTING FORWARD. FAILURE TO DO SO
COULD RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
(2) Install the four retaining bolts to the ORC.
Torque bolts to 11 N·m (95 in. lbs.).
(3) Connect the two electrical connectors to the
ORC.
(4) Connect one electrical connector on cluster
bezel, place in position over retaining slots and
firmly snap into place.
(5) Connect one electrical connector to instrument
panel center bezel and install six screws to center
bezel.
(6) Connect one electrical connector to center con-
sole, place into position and install eight screws to
console.
(7) Install floor console bezel and parking brake
body.
(8) Install shifter shaft with knob and body.
(9) Install six allen screws to shifter bezel.
WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE
CABLE (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS -
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - AIRBAG SYSTEM).
(10) Place battery access cover into place and
install four bolts.
(11) Close deck lid.
(12) Verify vehicle and system operation.
PASSENGER AIRBAG
DESCRIPTION
The passenger airbag door is concealed behind the
instrument panel top pad and above the glove box
opening on the instrument panel in front of the pas-
senger seating position. The stamped steel passenger
airbag door is secured on the back of the instrument
panel top pad armature between the two passenger
side panel outlets. A stamped metal reinforcement is
secured to the instrument panel top pad armature
near the upper edge of the passenger airbag door
opening, and helps to define a predetermined hinge
line beneath the decorative cover of the top pad.
Located behind the passenger airbag door is the
passenger airbag. The passenger airbag is secured to
the instrument panel. A short four-wire pigtail har-
ness with a keyed, yellow connector insulator con-
nects the two inflator initiators to the vehicle
electrical system.
The passenger airbag is a multistage, Next Gener-
ation-type. The passenger airbag consists of an
extruded aluminum housing, two stamped steel end
brackets, a molded plastic inner airbag cushion cover,
the rectangular fabric airbag cushion, and the airbag
inflator. The airbag housing contains the airbag infla-
tor, while the inner cover contains the folded airbag
cushion. The inner cover completely encloses the air-
bag cushion and is permanently retained to the hous-
ing. The airbag cushion is constructed of a coated
nylon fabric. The airbag inflator is a dual-initiator,
hybrid-type unit that is secured to and sealed within
the airbag housing.
The passenger airbag cannot be repaired, and must
be replaced if deployed, faulty, or in any way dam-
aged. The passenger airbag door is serviced only as a
unit with the instrument panel top pad. If the pas-
senger airbag is deployed, the instrument panel must
also be replaced.
OPERATION
The multistage passenger airbag is deployed by
electrical
signals
generated
by
the
Occupant
Restraint Controller (ORC) through the passenger
airbag squib 1 and squib 2 circuits to the two initia-
tors in the airbag inflator. By using two initiators,
the airbag can be deployed at multiple levels of force.
The force level is controlled by the ORC to suit the
monitored impact conditions by providing one of four
delay intervals between the electrical signals pro-
vided to the two initiators. The longer the delay
between these signals, the less forcefully the airbag
will deploy.
The hybrid-type inflator assembly includes a small
canister of highly compressed gas. When the ORC
sends the proper electrical signal to the airbag initi-
