13. Slide transmission and jack rearward until input shaft clears clutch housing.

14. Remove transmission from under vehicle.

DISASSEMBLY

SHIFT MECHANISM

1. Remove bolts holding shift tower to shift mecha-

nism cover and remove tower.

2. Remove bolts holding shift mechanism cover to

transmission.

3. Pry up shift mechanism cover at slot (1) with screw

driver (2).

4. Raise shift cover (1) up enough to disengage it

from the dowel pins (2).

5. Raise front of the mechanism and lift up and off the

transmission.

EXTENSION/ADAPTER HOUSING

1. Remove extension/adapter housing (1) bolts (2).

2. Remove extension/adapter housing (2) from gear

case (1) and alignment dowels.

3. Remove rubber spline seal (2) from end of main-

shaft (1) and discard shipping seal.

FIFTH GEAR

1. Remove extension/adapter housing.

2. Loosen

approximately 1 1/2 turns.

3. Install Wrench 6743 (1) on fifth gear nut (2).

NOTE: Wrench only fits one way on nut. Make
sure wrench is fully engaged in nut slots and is
not cocked.

4. Install Socket 6993 4X2 or Socket 6984 4X4 (3)

with breaker bar to hold mainshaft and remove fifth
gear nut.

NOTE: Wedge breaker bar handle against work-
bench. Purpose of socket wrench and breaker bar
is to prevent mainshaft from turning while nut is
loosened.

5. Remove fifth gear nut, then remove belleville

washer from mainshaft.

6. Remove fifth gear shift fork (2) roll pins (1). Drive

roll pins out from the bottom of fork.

7. Remove fifth gear clutch hub (2) and gear snap

ring (1) from countershaft.

8. Remove countershaft fifth gear clutch gear and

stop ring.

9. Tap off fifth gear shift fork and gear assembly off

rail with plastic mallet.

10. Remove fifth gear shift fork from sleeve.

11. Remove sleeve, struts and strut springs from

countershaft fifth gear hub, if necessary.

12. Remove countershaft (2) fifth gear needle bearing

(1) assembly.

13. Remove coned shape rear bearing thrust washer

(1) from countershaft.

14. Remove thrust washer locating pin (2) from

countershaft.

15. Remove mainshaft (3) fifth gear (1) with Puller Set

6444 and Jaw 6459 or 6820 (2). Position first Jaw
on gear.
