5. At the catalytic converter-to-extension pipe connec-

tion, install the clamp and nuts. Tighten the clamp
nuts to 41 N·m (30 ft. lbs.) torque.

6. Lower the vehicle.

7. Start the engine, inspect for exhaust leaks. Repair

exhaust leaks as necessary.

8. Check the exhaust system for contact with the body

panels. Make the necessary adjustments, if neces-
sary.

5.7L ENGINE

1. Raise and support the vehicle.

2. Remove any burrs from the RH (2) and LH (4) cat-

alytic converter.

3. Insert the RH (2) catalytic converter into the

exhaust pipe.

4. Position the RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust pipe

clamp. Do not tighten at this time.

5. Make sure the alignment tang is seated in the

alignment slot.

6. Insert the LH catalytic converter 4) into the RH cat-

alytic converter (2).

7. Make sure the alignment tang is seated in the

alignment slot.

8. Position theLH catalytic converter-to-RH catalytic

converter clamp (3). Do not tighten at this time.

9. Install the LH and RH catalytic comverters (2 and

4) to the exhaust manifold. TIghten bolts to 34 N·m
(24 lbs. ft.)

10. Connect the oxygen sensor electrical connectors.

11. Tighten exhaust clamps to 42 N·m (31 lbs. ft).

12. If other sections of the exhaust system where

loosened in removal, refer to that information for
the tightening procedures.

13. Lower the vehicle.

14. Start the engine, inspect for exhaust leaks. Repair

exhaust leaks as necessary.

15. Check the exhaust system for contact with the

body panels. Make the necessary adjustments, if
necessary.

SHIELDS-HEAT

DESCRIPTION

There are two types of heat shields (1) used. One is
stamped steel the other is molded foil sheets. The
shields attach to the vehicle around the exhaust
system.

OPERATION

The heat shields prevent heat from the exhaust system from entering the passenger area and other areas where
the heat can cause damage to other components.

REMOVAL

1. Raise and support the vehicle.

2. Remove the screws and nuts holding the heat

shields (1) to the frame and floor pan. When
removing muffler heat shield, the muffler front and
rear support hangers (2) must be removed first. Be
sure to disconnect both oxygen sensor connec-
tors.

3. Slide the heat shield (1) out around the exhaust

system.

INSTALLATION

1.

Position the heat shields to the floor pan or the frame and install the screws and nuts.

2. Tighten the screws/nuts to 7 N·m (60 in. lbs.) torque. Tighten the muffler hangers to 23 N·m (200 in. lbs.)

3. Lower the vehicle.

MUFFLER

DESCRIPTION

All engines use a stainless steel muffler (1) to control
exhaust noise levels and exhaust back pressure.

OPERATION

The muffler is designed to muffle the sound of the exhaust as if leaves the engine.

REMOVAL

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.

2. Remove the exhaust pipe (Refer to 11 - EXHAUST

SYSTEM/EXHAUST PIPE - REMOVAL).

3. Remove the muffler-to-catalytic converter clamp

(3).

4. Remove the muffler isolators (1 and 4).

5. Remove the muffler (5) from the catalytic converter.

INSTALLATION

1. Install muffler to the catalytic converter.

2. Make sure the alignment tang seats in the alignment slot.

3. Install exhaust clamp. Do not tightern at this time.

4. Install muffler isolators.

5. Install exhaust pipe (Refer to 11 - EXHAUST SYSTEM/EXHAUST PIPE - INSPECTION).

6. Align muffler and exhaust pipe. Tighten exhaust clamp nuts to 42 N·m (31 ft. lbs.).

7. Check the exhaust system for contact with body panels. Make the necessary adjustmens, if necessary.

8. Lower vehicle.

9. Start engine and check for exhaust leaks.Repair exhaust leaks as necessary.

TAILPIPE

DESCRIPTION

The tailpipe is made of stainless steel and attaches to
the muffler.

OPERATION

The tailpipe channels the exhaust out of the muffler and out from under the vehicle to control noise and prevent
exhaust gas fumes from entering the passenger compartment.
