NOTE: The power mirror
switch contains three switches
(designated 1, 2, and 3). The
three switches are not
mechanically connected, but
operate independently or
together depending on the
mirror direction selected
(up, down, left, right). Refer
to the table below for
internal switch positions
according to the mirrror
direction selected.

Driving Position Memory System (DPMS)

How the Circuit Works

The power mirrors, driver’s seat and steering
column have a memory feature. The two outside
mirror adjustments, the driver’s three seat
adjustments (back and forth, up and down, seat
back angle) and the two steering column
adjustments (extend and retract, and steering
column angle) can be regulated separately. All of
the adjustments can be memorized by pressing
the MEMO button on the driving position memory
switch, and then (within five seconds) pressing
one of the two position buttons. If you press that
same position button after the adjustments are
memorized, the seat and the steering column will
move to those memorized positions.

NOTE: Disconnecting the battery for more than 30
seconds will cancel the memorized positions.

The driving position memory system is controlled
by three separate control units. The steering
wheel position is controlled by the steering column
control unit, the driver’s seat position is controlled
by the power seat control unit, and the outside
mirror position is controlled by the power mirror
control unit. The driving position memory switch is
linked directly to the steering column control unit
which relays the position switch commands to the
power seat control unit and the power mirror
control unit.

Each power mirror has two Hall-effect type
sensors to detect the changes in voltage caused
by the movements of the mirror. The power mirror
control unit then stores the voltage changes for
that mirrors position in its memory.

Each power seat motor has a reed switch sensor
which sends a pulse to the power seat control unit
when the motor rotates. The power seat control
unit then stores the number of pulses for that seat
position in its memory.

The steering column control unit uses variable
resistor-type tilt sensors to detect the changes in
voltage caused by the movements of the steering
column. The steering column control unit then
stores the voltage changes for that column
position in its memory.

When you push one of the position buttons, the
driving position memory switch commands the
steering column control unit, power seat control
unit, and the power mirror control unit to retrieve
the corresponding steering wheel, power seat,
and outside mirror positions. This function is
disabled at speeds above 6 mph (10 km/h).

When you pull out the ignition key with the AUTO
switch ON and the car parked, the steering column
will automatically move to the highest tilt position
and fully retracted position to ease your exit from the
car.

Refer to the Service Manual (Section 23, Electrical)
for specific tests and troubleshooting procedures.
