STORING STEAM LOCOMOTIVES

10.1

SHORT TERM STORAGE

When storing steam locomotives out of use for short periods
of up to a month, the boiler is to be filled fully with treated
water.

The chimney is to be capped and ash cleaned from the
smoke box and around the edges of the firebox.

10.2

LONG TERM STORAGE

When storing steam locomotives out of use for long periods,
in excess of two months, the boiler is to be emptied and
washed out, with particular care being taken to remove
sediment, rust and scale from the bottom of the barrel and
around the foundation ring of the firebox.  All plugs are to be
left out to allow air to circulate through the boiler.  The
chimney is to be capped.

Refer to FIGURE 17 in Annex A for the numbering of Boiler
Plugs.

All ash is to be removed from around the edges of the
firebox, especially between the grate and firebox wall.  Sump
oil should be placed around the firebox bottom edges
especially around the bottom rivets and wall stays.

Tubes are to be thoroughly brushed and cleaned out.

The smoke box is to be cleaned out with all soot and ash
being removed from the bottom of the tube plate.  This area
is to be soaked in the sump oil.

Before moving an engine, which has been in long term
storage, ensure that sufficient lubrication has been provided
in the cylinders.
