Chapter 5: - Fireman’s Duties
If firing on a downward grade is necessary, the door is kept
open slightly until the new coal is burning well and smoke
has cleared away. The door is then closed.
The blower should be used only lightly and only when
necessary.

WATERING STOPS
It is essential that feed water treatment be added to tender
water each time the engine takes on water. Care is to be
taken to ensure the correct amounts of the various
treatments are added for the amount of water added to the
tender or side tanks.
Firemen are to ensure that the hydrant hose is hooked back
behind the water valve after taking water and that the valve
is fully turned off.
Ash is not to be dropped at the Swanbank water
hydrant.

STABLING AND ENGINE
When an engine is to be stabled at the end of an operating
day, the boiler is to be filled as much as possible before the
fire is dropped or banked so that only minor filling will be
required when the fire is withdrawn.
Ash is to be blown out of the smokebox before cleaning or
dropping the fire.
When cleaning or dropping the fire, the ashpan water is
turned on before opening the ashpan traps.
The bars are rocked to remove as much ash as possible.
The clinker bar is then opened and all ash and clinker
removed by pushing out through he clinker bar opening.
Care is to be taken to ensure that all ash and clinker is
removed from under the door.
If the fire is to be banked, enough live coal must be retained
to form a bed on which to build a bank of green coal.
The ashpan water is turned off, the ashpan traps are closed
and the traps are checked to ensure they have closed
completely. The dampers are also closed.
