Chapter 1: - General

GENERAL 

 
 

1.1 

PURPOSE 

 
 

The purpose of this manual is to provide Queensland 
Pioneer Steam Railway Co-operative Limited’s Members 
with clear procedures to follow to ensure that train 
operations and other Society activities are carried out in the 
safest possible manner. 

 
1.2 

REVIEW OF STEAM LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEMAN’S 
MANUAL 

 
 

The Board will review this document and conduct an internal 
audit every One (1)  Year to ensure that it remains current 
and meets the Society’s Operational requirements. 

 
1.3 

MEMBERS TO BE COMPETENT 

 
 

Members performing any Train Operation activity, including 
light-up duties, are to be certified as competent by the Train 
Operation’s Supervisor or are to perform duties under the 
direct supervision of a competent member. 

 
 

Refer to FIGURE 1 and 2 in Annex A.

QPSR MEMBERS TO UNDERSTAND THIS MANUAL 

 

 
 

Before taking part in any Steam Locomotive activity, a 
Society Member must receive a copy of  the  Steam 
Locomotive Engineman’s Manual.  
They must fully 
understand the contents of the Manual and abide by the 
contents or any future alterations or additions to the Manual. 

  
 

It is important that Society Members consider the safety of 
themselves and others as their highest priority.  It is the duty 
of all Members to report to the Officer-in-Charge of Train 
Operations on that day, or a Board Member, any non-
compliance with the provisions of the Steam Locomotive 
Engineman’s Manual or any dangerous situation that might 
be observed.

ALTERATIONS OR ADDITIONS TO THIS MANUAL 

        
 

The Board may decide to make alterations or additions to 
this Manual from time to time.  The Board is to ensure that 
all Members and external Authorities receive copies of any 
alterations or additions and Members are to be briefed on 
any alterations or additions, if necessary, by the Train 
Operations Supervisor.

STEAM LOCOMOTIVES ENGINEMAN’S MANUAL AND 
DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEMAN’S MANUAL 

 
 

The Steam Locomotive Engineman’s Manual is to be 
referred to when operating the Society’s Steam 
Locomotives. 

 
 

The Diesel Locomotive Engineman’s Manual is to be 
referred to when operating Locomotive 1616.

OPERATION’S MANUAL 

 
 

The Operation’s Manual is to be used in conjunction with the 
Steam Locomotive Engineman’s Manual and the Diesel 
Locomotive Engineman’s Manual.

CLEANING OF LOCOMOTIVES 

 

 

2.1 

LIGHT-UP CREW TO CLEAN LOCOMOTIVE 

 
 

It is the duty of the light-up crew to clean the locomotive 
before leaving the Box Flat Depot. 

 
 

Tallow or kerosene can be used to clean boilers, smoke 
boxes, cab panels and tender walls.  The locomotive should 
then be wiped down with clean waste or rags. 

 
 

Brass components are to be polished. 

 
 

The inside of the cab is also to be cleaned.  Footboards are 
to be removed and the cab swept.  Footboards are to be 
cleaned and replaced. 

 
2.2 

STEAM CLEANING 

 
 

If the engine is to be steam cleaned, care must be taken to 
ensure water and foreign matter is removed from oil 
receptacles. 

 

 

 

Lubricant removed as a result of steam cleaning is to be
