Course Objective: Recognize wheel types, reasons for the differences,
how to distinguish and classify wheels by size, material, method of
manufacture and design differences. Inspect and identify wheel defects
(per Federal Railroad Administration), learn and use the various types
of gages for measuring wheel defects. Use tables for Association of
American Railroads (AAR) Why Made Codes and learn Railroad
and/or Shop Identifying marks. Use this standard reference by the AAR
for all railroad wheel and axle work.

Who this is for: Railroad Mechanical Department Supervisors, inspec-
tors, craftsmen and other railroad employees involved in the safe and
proper maintenance of wheels.
