CORRECT

USE OF

THE CAR

The ABS system with
which the car may be fit-

ted does not control the trailer
braking system. Great care should
therefore be taken when driving on
slippery road surfaces.

WARNING

Under no circumstances
should the vehicle brake

system be altered to control the
trailer brake. The trailer braking
system must be fully independent
of the vehicle’s hydraulic system.

The towing device must meet cur-

rent regulations with reference to

94/20/EC Directive and subsequent

amendments.

For any version the towing device

used must match the towable weight

of the vehicle on which it is to be in-

stalled.

IMPORTANT Supplementary elec-

tric loads other than external lights

(e.g. electric brake, electric winch,

etc.) shall be used with running en-

gine.

WARNING

TOWING TRAILERS

IMPORTANT NOTES

For towing caravans or trailers the car

must be fitted with a certified tow

hook and an adequate electric system.

Installation should be carried out by

specialised personnel who release a

special document for circulation on

the road.

Install any specific and/or additional

rear-view mirrors as specified by law.

Remember that when towing a trailer,

steep hills are harder to climb, the

braking spaces increase and overtak-

ing takes longer depending on the

overall weight.

Engage a low gear when driving

downhill, rather than constantly us-

ing the brake.

The weight the trailer exerts on the

car tow hook reduces by the same

amount the actual vehicle loading ca-

pacity. To make sure the maximum

towable weight is not exceeded (given

in the log book) account should be

taken of the fully laden trailer, in-

cluding accessories and personal be-

longings.

Do not exceed the speed limits of the

country you are driving in. In any

case do not exceed 100 km/h.

INSTALLING THE TOW HOOK

The towing device should be fastened

to the body by specialised personnel

according to any additional and/or in-

tegrative information supplied by the

Manufacturer of the device.

SNOW TYRES

Use snow tyres of the same size as the

normal tyres provided with the car.

Lancia Dealership will be happy to

provide advice concerning the most

suitable type of tyre for the customer’s

requirements.

For the type of tyre to be used, infla-

tion pressures and the specifications

of snow tyres, follow the instructions

given in paragraph “Wheels” in sec-

tion “Technical specifications”.

The winter features of these tyres are

reduced considerably when the tread

depth is below 4 mm. In this case,

they should be replaced.

Due to the snow tyre features, under

normal conditions of use or on long

motorway journeys, the performance

of these tyres is lower than that of

normal tyres. It is therefore necessary

to limit their use to the purposes for

which they are certified.

IMPORTANT When snow tyres are

used with a max speed index below

the one that can be reached by the car

(increased by 5%), place a notice in

the passenger compartment, plainly

in the driver’s view which states the

max permissible speed of the snow

tyres (as per EC Directive).

All four tyres should be the same

(brand and track) to ensure greater

safety when driving and braking and

better driveability.

Remember that it is inappropriate to

change the direction of rotation of

tyres.

The max speed for snow
tyres with “Q” marking is

160 km/h; 190 km/h for tyres with
“T” marking and 210 km/h for
tyres with “H” marking. The Road
Traffic Code speed limits must
however be always strictly ob-
served.

SNOW CHAINS

Use of snow chains should be in com-

pliance with local regulations.

Snow chains should only be applied

to the driving wheels (front wheels).

We recommend using Lineaccessori

Lancia snow chains.

Check the tension of the chains after

driving some ten metres.

IMPORTANT Snow chains cannot be

fitted to the space-saver spare wheel.

So, if a front (drive) wheel is punc-

tured and chains are needed, a rear

wheel should be fitted to the front of

the vehicle and the spare wheel should

be fitted to the rear. This way with

two normal drive wheels, snow chains

can be fitted to them to solve an

emergency.

Refer to the above mentioned table for information on the wheels
where snow chains can be fitted. Follow the prescriptions.

Keep your speed down when snow chains are fitted. Do not
exceed 50 km/h. Avoid potholes, steps and pavements and
avoid also to drive for long distances on roads not covered
with snow to prevent damaging the car and the roadbed.

CAR INACTIVITY

If the car is to be left inactive for

longer than a month, the following

precautions should be noted:
❒ park the car in covered, dry and if

possible well-ventilated premises;

❒ engage a gear;
❒ check that the handbrake is not en-

gaged;

❒ disconnect the negative terminal

from the battery pole and check

charge level (see paragraph “Bat-

tery – Check of charge and elec-

trolyte level” in chapter “Car Main-

tenance”);

❒ clean and protect the painted parts

using protective wax;

❒ clean and protect the shiny metal

parts using special compounds

readily available;

❒ sprinkle talcum powder on the rub-

ber windscreen and rear window

wiper blades and lift them off the

glass;

❒ slightly open the windows;
❒ cover the car with a cloth or perfo-

rated plastic sheet. Do not use

sheets of non-perforated plastic as

they do not allow moisture on the

car body to evaporate;

❒ inflate tyres to +0.5 bar above the

normal specified pressure and

check it at intervals;

❒ if you don’t disconnect the battery

from the electric system, check its

charge every month and recharge it

if the optical indicator shows a dark

colour without the central green

area;

❒ do not drain the engine cooling sys-

tem.

GENERAL WARNINGS
Turning on of warning light is accom-

panied by specific message and/or by

buzzer sound where provided by in-

strument panel. These indications are

concise and cautionary and shall not

be considered as exhaustive and/or as

an alternative to the specifications con-

tained in this Owner Handbook which

shall always be read through carefully

and thoroughly. In case of failure indi-

cation always refer to the specifica-

tions contained in this section.
IMPORTANT Failure indications di-

splayed are divided into two categories:

very serious and less serious failures.
Very serious failures are indicated by

a warning “cycle” repeated until failure

is eliminated.
Less serious failures are indicated by

a limited warning “cycle”.
The warning cycle of both failure clas-

ses can be stopped by pressing button

MODE. The instrument panel warning

light will stay on until eliminating the

fault.
As concerns messages relevant to the

versions equipped with Dualogic gear-

box, see the attached Supplement.

The warning light turns on when the

engine is overheated.

If the warning light comes on when

driving, proceed as follows:
❒ normal driving conditions: stop

the car, switch off the engine and

check whether the water level in the

reservoir is not below the MIN

mark. Otherwise wait for few se-

conds to allow the engine cooling,

then open slowly and carefully the

cap, top up coolant and check

whether its level is falling between

MIN and MAX marks in the reser-

voir. Check visually any leak. If,

when restarting, the warning light

comes on again, contact a Lancia

Dealership.

u

❒ Car heavy duty (e.g.: towing trai-

ler uphill of fully laden car): de-

crease speed, if the warning light

stays on, stop the car. Wait for 2 or

3 minutes leaving the engine on

and slightly accelerated to further

activate the circulation of the coo-

lant fluid, then switch the engine

off. Check proper coolant level as

described previously.

flash in the following ways, depending

on the version:

– for 1 minute every two hours;

– for 3 minute cycles with the warning

light off for intervals of 5 seconds un-

til oil is changed.

After the initial warning, each time

the engine is started up, the warning

light will continue to flash in the

above mentioned modes, until the oil

If the warning light flashes, this does

not mean that the car is defective but

simply informs the driver that it is

now necessary to change the oil as a

result of regular vehicle use.

Note that engine oil is exhausted fa-

ster under the following circumstan-

ces:

– use of the vehicle prevalently for city

driving, requiring more frequent re-

generation of DPF

– use of the vehicle for short drives, in

which the engine does not have time

to reach its regular operating tempe-

rature

– repeated interruption of the rege-

BRAKE PAD WEAR

(amber)

worn; in this case have them changed

as soon as possible.

message.

d

CLEANING DPF

(PARTICULATE

FILTER) IN PROGRESS

(Multijet versions with
DPF - amber)

When the ignition key is turned to

MAR (ON), the warning light switches

on but it must switch off after a few

seconds. The warning light comes on

constantly to notify the driver that the

DPF system needs to eliminate cap-

tured pollutants (particulate) by the

regeneration process.

The warning light does not come on

during every DPF regeneration, but

only when driving conditions require

notification of the driver.

To switch the warning light off, the

car must stay in motion until regene-

ration has been completed.  The pro-

cess normally takes about 15 minutes.

h

The optimum conditions to end the

process are achieved by keeping the

car in motion up to 60km/h with an

engine speed higher than 2,000 rpm.

This light coming on is not a car de-

fect and therefore the car does not

need to go to the workshop.

A specific message will appear on the

display when the warning light comes

on (for versions/ markets, where pro-

vided).

Always drive at a speed
appropriate to the traffic

conditions, the weather and speed
limits.  The engine may be turned
off while the DPF light is on;
however, repeated interruption of
the regeneration process may re-
sult in premature exhaustion of en-
gine oil. For this reason it is
always advisable to wait for the li-
ght to go off before turning off the
engine, following the instructions
appearing above. It is not advisa-
ble to complete DPF regeneration
with the vehicle stationary.
