Chapter 3: Overhaul

14.

Install Axle Shaft:

(a)

Assembly bearings, cups, and bearing spacer collar using press.

(b)

Clean and lubricate hub cavity and carefully fix axle shaft into housing.

(c)

Install shims (total thickness .043-.045), gaskets, bearing retainer and oil seal
retainer.

(d)

Install the wheel hub rotor, brake caliper half and crossover line.

(e)

Connect brake lines to calipers.

(f)

Install the axle shaft washer and nut, torquing nut to 400-500 foot-pounds
(542-678 N-m).

(g)

Clean magnetic drain plug then install plug in axle housing.

(h)

Fill carrier with 5 1/2 pints (2.6 L) of oil (SAE 90 for winter; SAE 140 for summer).

(i)

Install tires and wheels.

(j)

Install axle in vehicle.

(k)

Jack-up rear of vehicle and operate vehicle at moderate speed for 5 minutes to

disperse lubrication.

(l)

Check lubrication.

TORQUES GIVEN APPLY TO PARTS COATED WITH MACHINE OIL; FOR DRY
(OR "AS RECEIVED) PARTS INCREASE TORQUES 10%; FOR PARTS COATED WITH
MULTI-PURPOSE GEAR OIL, DECREASE TORQUES 10% ON STUDS USE SAME TORQUE AS
FOR DRIVING STUD.

V.

REAR WHEEL DISC BRAKES (SERIAL NO’S 0001 THROUGH 0127)

A.

BRAKE SHOES

1.

Removal:

(a)

Chock front wheels and jack the rear wheels off the ground.

CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE THE DRIVE AXLE HUB NUT FOR WHEEL
REMOVAL. HUB NUT IS REMOVED ONLY FOR AXLE OR BRAKE REPAIR.
SEE FIGURE l.

(b)

Remove the eight (8) lug nuts which secure the wheel to the drive axle hub and

remove the wheel.

(c)

Remove the two (2) brake shoe retaining clips by removing the bolts and lock

washers which hold them in place.

(d)

Using a pair of pliers, grasp the rear edge of the shoe and slide it out. Repeat for

other shoe.

NOTE: It may be necessary to bleed pressure off the system so as to release the
shoes. This can be done by loosening the bleeder screw.

2.

Installation:

(a)

Slide the new brake shoes into the caliper so that the lining of each shoe is
against the rotor and the ears of the shoes resting on the bridge of the caliper.

(b)

Install brake shoe retaining clips.

(c)

Bleed brakes at calipers and add brake fluid to master cylinder, if needed.

(d)

Mount the wheel and lower tractor from jacks.

B.

CALIPER AND ROTOR

1.

Removal:

(a)

Chock the front tires and jack the rear wheels off the ground.

(b)

Remove the eight (8) lugnuts which secure the wheel to the drive axle hub and

remove the wheel.

(c)

Reinstall four (4) lugnuts so as to hold the hub against the rotor.

(d)

Remove the cotter pin from the hub nut and remove the nut and washer.

(e)

Remove the brake shoe retaining clips and remove the brake shoes.

(f)

Disconnect and plug the brake line or let it drain into a suitable container. Discard

drained fluid.

(g)

Remove the caliper cross-over line and the bridge bolts which hold the caliper
halves together and remove the outer caliper half.

(h)

Slide the wheel hub and rotor off the axle.

(i)

Remove the cotter pins, nuts, and bolts which secure the remaining caliper half to
the axle housing and remove the caliper.

NOTE: In removing the caliper mounting bolts and nuts, it is important to turn the

nut, not the bolt.

2.

Caliper Disassembly:

(a)

Remove the bleeder screw. Figure 1.

(b)

Peel dust boots out and away from piston grooves and caliper housing.
