IGNITION SYSTEM

TROUBLESHOOTING

Check the main fuse and ignition fuse.
Refer to “FUSE INSPECTION” in CHAPTER 2.

Check the battery.
Refer to “BATTERY INSPECTION” in CHAPTER 2.

Check the spark plug gap.
Refer to “SPARK PLUGS” in CHAPTER 2.

Check the ignition spark gap.

Check the ignition coil resistance.

Check the crankshaft position sensor.

Check the engine stop switch, throttle switch and 
main switch.

Check the throttle position sensor.
Refer to “THROTTLE BODY” in CHAPTER 7.

Check the ignition system’s wiring.
Refer to “CIRCUIT DIAGRAM”.

Correct the connection and/or ECU.

NO SPARK OR WEAK SPARK.

FAULTY

Replace the main fuse and/or ignition fuse.

OUT OF SPECIFICATION

Replace and/or charge the battery.
Refer to “BATTERY INSPECTION” in CHAPTER 
2.

Repair or replace the spark plug.

Is self-diagnosis code 15, 16, or 42 displayed?

Has throttle body icing occurred or is foreign 
material stuck in the throttle body?

Is the throttle switch malfunctioning?

Is the throttle cable free play out of specification?

Was the engine revved with the V-belt removed?

Is the throttle position sensor, speedometer unit, or 
speed sensor installed incorrectly?

Correct the connection and/or replace the 
speedometer unit and/or ECU.

IGNITION SPARK GAP

1. Remove:

• Ignition coil

2. Measure:

• Ignition spark gap

Out of specification 

→ Replace the ignition

coil.

Measurement steps:

• Disconnect the ignition coil 1 from the spark

plug.

• Connect the dynamic spark tester 2 or ignition

checker 3.

• Measure the ignition spark gap 

a.

• Crank the engine by turning the main switch to

start and gradually increase the spark gap until
a misfire occurs.

1. Disconnect:

• Ignition coil coupler

2. Connect:

• Pocket tester

3. Measure:

• Primary coil resistance

→ Replace.

Primary coil resistance:

1.19 ~ 1.61 

Ω at 20 °C (68 °F)

Secondary coil resistance:

8.5 ~ 11.5 k

CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR

1. Disconnect:

• Crankshaft position sensor coupler 

2. Connect:

• Pocket tester

(to the crankshaft position sensor coupler)

3. Measure:

• Crankshaft position sensor resistance

Out of specification 

→ Replace.
