MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MFI) DIAGNOSIS

TSB Revision

MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MFI)

13A-625

STEP 2. Check the evaporative emission purge solenoid
valve using scan tool MB991958 (Actuator test item 08).

CAUTION

• To prevent damage to scan tool MB991958, always turn

the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position before
connecting or disconnecting scan tool MB991958.

(1) Connect scan tool MB991958 to the data link connector.

(2) Disconnect hoses A to B from the evaporative emission

purge solenoid valve side.

(3) Connect a hand vacuum pump to the evaporative emission

purge solenoid valve instead of hose B.

(4) Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(5) Set scan tool MB991958 to actuator rest mode.

• Item 08: evaporative Emission Purge solenoid valve.

• When the evaporative emission purge solenoid

valve is operated, apply a pressure on the hand vac-
uum pump and confirm that air is blown from the
other side nipple.

(6) Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
(7) Disconnect the hand vacuum pump, and connect hoses A

and B to the evaporative emission purge solenoid valve.

Q: Does the evaporative emission purge solenoid hold

vacuum?
YES :
Go to Step 3 .
NO :  Replace the evaporative emission purge solenoid

valve. Then go to Step 16 .

STEP 3. Check for leaks in the evaporative emission
system line between hose A through C.
Perform a leakage test with a hand vacuum pump on each
hose from hose A through C.
Q: Do the hoses hold vacuum?

YES : Go to Step 4 .
NO :  Replace any damaged hose and reinstall the hoses.

Then go to Step 16 .

STEP 4. Check the evaporative emission ventilation
solenoid using scan tool MB991958. (Actuator test item
29).

CAUTION

To prevent damage to scan tool MB991958, always turn the
ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position before con-
necting or disconnecting scan tool MB991958.
(1) Connect scan tool MB991958 to the data link connector.

(2) Disconnect hose M from the evaporative emission

ventilation solenoid side.

(3) Connect a hand vacuum pump.
(4) Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(5) Set scan tool MB991958 to actuator test mode.

• item 29: Evaporative Emission Ventilation Solenoid

Valve.

• When the evaporative emission ventilation solenoid

valve is operated, apply a pressure on the hand vac-
uum pump and confirm that air is maintained.

(6) Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
(7) Disconnect the hand vacuum pump, and connect hose M to

the evaporative emission ventilation solenoid.

Q: Do the evaporative emission ventilation solenoid hold

vacuum?
YES :
Go to Step 5 .
NO :  Replace the evaporative emission ventilation solenoid

(Refer to GROUP 17, Evaporative Emission Canister
and Fuel Tank Pressure Relief Valve

P.17-116

). Then

go to Step 16 .

STEP 5. Check for leaks in the evaporative emission
system hose M.
Perform a leakage test with a hand vacuum pump on each
hose from hose D to hose F.
Q: Do the hoses hold vacuum?

YES : Go to Step 6 .
NO :  Replace the damaged hose M. Then go to Step 16 .

STEP 6. Check for vacuum leaks in the evaporative
emission system hose D.
Perform a leakage test with a hand vacuum pump on hose D.
Q: Do the hoses hold vacuum?

YES : Go to Step 7 .
NO :  Replace the damaged hose D. Then go to Step 16 .
