Testing

1) For KOER & Continuous Memory Only DTC P0340 & P0345: Check If Engine Will Start
This DTC indicates PCM can no longer detect CMP sensor input signal. Possible causes for this fault are:

z

CMP Circuit Open, Or Shorted To GND Or PWR

z

SIG RTN Circuit Open (Variable Reluctance Type CMP Sensor)

z

CMP GND Circuit Open (Hall Effect Type CMP Sensor)

z

CMP Incorrectly Installed (Hall Effect Type CMP Sensor)

z

Faulty CMP Sensor Or Shielding

z

Faulty PCM

Attempt to start engine. If engine will start, go to next step. If engine is a no-start, DTC P0340 or P0345
is not the cause of the no-start. Perform symptom checks under NO-START/NORMAL CRANK under
SYMPTOMS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE article to
diagnose no-start concern.

2) Check CMP Signal Sent To PCM

Engine running. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Select CMPFM and if present
CMPFM2 PID(s) from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. If a fault indicated with either or both
CMP sensors, individually diagnose CMP sensor(s) indicating a fault. Then go to next step. If a fault is
not indicated, CMP, PCM and harness(es) are working properly at this time. Go to TEST Z, step 1).

3) Clear & Attempt To Re-Generate DTC P0340 Or P0345

Clear DTCs. Perform PCM RESET PROCEDURE under CLEARING CODES under SELF-

NOTE:

For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS.

DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine. Raise engine speed to more than 1500 RPM for 10 seconds and
then return to idle speed. Repeat this twice. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Perform QUICK
TEST
to retrieve Continuous Memory DTCs. If DTC P0340 or P0345 is not present, fault is unable to be
duplicated at this time. Go to TEST Z, step 1). If DTC P0340 or P0345 is present, go to next step.

4) For Continuous Memory Only DTC P1336: Determine CMP Sensor Physical Type

Input Signal to PCM from CKP Sensor and or CMP Sensor erratic. Possible causes are:

z

Damaged PCM.

z

Damaged CKP sensor.

z

Damaged CMP sensor.

z

Base Engine Concerns.

z

Harness Concerns.

If the CMP sensor a drop-in (synchronizer) type, go to next step. If the CMP sensor is not a drop-in
(synchronizer) type, go to step 6).

5) Verify Correct Installation Of CMP Sensor

A CMP sensor identifies the cylinder No. 1 power stroke. A sensor that is improperly installed/indexed
can identify the wrong cylinder as No. 1, produce a tip-in hesitation and generate DTC P0340. Verify the
correct installation by referring to CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR in appropriate REMOVAL &
INSTALLATION article. If the vehicle has a miss and DTC P0340, possible ignition, alternator noise,
RFI, and CKP concerns may be present. If the CMP sensor is installed correctly, go to next step. If the
CMP sensor is not installed correctly, reposition CMP sensor. See CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR in
appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article.

6) Determine CMP Sensor Electronic Type

Variable Reluctance (VR) sensors have 2-wire connectors, Hall Effect sensors have 3-wire connectors. If
the CMP sensor is a VR type, go to next step. If the CMP sensor is not a VR type, go to step 13).

7) Check CMP Sensor Resistance

Disconnect CMP sensor connector. Measure resistance of CMP sensor between CMP and SIG RTN
circuits. CMP sensor resistance values change significantly with temperature rise. If resistance is 250-
1000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 250-1000 ohms, replace CMP sensor.

8) Check CMP Circuit For Short To Power In Harness

Disconnect PCM connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position, with engine OFF. Measure voltage
between CMP circuit (at PCM or CMP harness connector) and battery ground terminal. If voltage is less
than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is not less than one volt, repair short circuit.

9) Check For Open In Harness Between PCM And CMP Sensor
