(6) Remove the vehicle wiring harness connector

from brake fluid level switch in master cylinder
brake fluid reservoir (Fig. 79).

(7) Disconnect the two brake tubes from the mas-

ter cylinder, and two brake tubes from the propor-
tioning valves (Fig. 80). Install plugs at all of the
open brake tube outlets on the master cylinder.

(8) Continental Teves Master Cylinder Only – If

equipped with a manual transaxle, remove the hose
clamp and slide the clutch actuator hose off the res-
ervoir port (Fig. 81).

(9) Clean the area around where the master cylin-

der attaches to the power brake booster using a suit-
able brake cleaner such as Mopar

Cleaner or equivalent.

(10) Remove the two nuts attaching the master

cylinder to the power brake booster (Fig. 82).

(11) Slide the master cylinder straight out of the

power brake booster.

(12) To remove the proportioning valves, unthread

each from the master cylinder (Fig. 83).

REMOVAL - RHD

NOTE: Before proceeding, (Refer to 5 - BRAKES -
WARNING) (Refer to 5 - BRAKES - CAUTION).

CAUTION: The vacuum in the power brake booster
must be pumped down before removing the master
cylinder to prevent the booster from sucking in any
contamination. This can be done by pumping the
brake pedal while the engine is not running until a
firm brake pedal is achieved.

(1) With the engine not running, pump the brake

pedal 4-5 strokes until the pedal feel is firm.

(2) Disconnect the negative (ground) cable from

the battery and isolate the cable.

(3) Remove the brake booster vacuum supply hose

from the booster and position it out of the way.

(4) Disconnect the wiring harness connector from

brake fluid level switch in the brake fluid reservoir.

(5) Disconnect the primary and secondary brake

tubes from the master cylinder outlet ports (Fig. 84).
Install plugs at all of the open brake tube outlets on
the master cylinder.

(6) Continental Teves Master Cylinder Only – If

equipped with a manual transaxle, remove the clamp
and slide the clutch actuator hose off the reservoir
port (Fig. 85).

(7) Clean the area around where the master cylin-

der attaches to the power brake booster using a suit-
able brake cleaner such as Mopar

(8) Remove the two nuts attaching the master cyl-

inder to the power brake booster (Fig. 86).

(9) Slide the master cylinder straight out of the

power brake booster.

DISASSEMBLY - CONTINENTAL TEVES
MASTER CYLINDER

(1) Clean the master cylinder housing and brake

fluid reservoir. Use only Mopar

t Brake Parts Cleaner

or equivalent.

(2) Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap. Using a

syringe or equivalent type tool, empty as much brake
fluid as possible from the reservoir.

CAUTION: When removing the fluid reservoir from
the master cylinder, do not attempt to pry it off
using any type of tool. This can damage the fluid
reservoir or master cylinder housing.

(3) Remove the screw fastening the fluid reservoir

to the master cylinder housing (Fig. 87).

(4) Pull the reservoir straight up and remove it

from the grommet seals in master cylinder housing
(Fig. 88).

(5) If the reservoir is being replaced, remove the

fluid level switch. Push together the retaining tabs
holding the brake fluid level switch in place in the
brake fluid reservoir (Fig. 89), then pull the brake
fluid level switch out the opposite side of the reser-
voir.

(6) Remove the vacuum seal from the master cyl-

inder mounting flange (Fig. 90).

(1) Install a NEW vacuum seal on the master cyl-

inder mounting flange making sure the seal fits
squarely in its groove (Fig. 90).

(2) If the reservoir is being replaced, align the

brake fluid level switch with its mounting hole on
the left side of the master cylinder brake fluid reser-
voir. Push the switch into the fluid reservoir until the

switch retaining tabs are expanded on the other side
of the reservoir, locking it in place (Fig. 89).

(3) Lubricate the reservoir mounting area with

fresh clean brake fluid. Place the reservoir in posi-
tion over the grommet seals (Fig. 88). Slide reservoir
into grommet seals by firmly pressing down on fluid
reservoir. Once installed, make sure fluid reservoir is
touching the top of both grommet seals.

(4) Install the fluid reservoir mounting screw (Fig.

87). Tighten the screw to 4 N·m (35 in. lbs.).

(6) Install master cylinder on power brake booster.

(Refer to 5 - BRAKES/HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL/
MASTER CYLINDER - INSTALLATION)

INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION - LHD WITH ABS

NOTE: The master cylinder must be bled before
installing it on the vehicle.

(1) Bleed the master cylinder before installing it

on the vehicle. (Refer to 5 - BRAKES/HYDRAULIC/
MECHANICAL/MASTER CYLINDER - STANDARD
PROCEDURE)

(2) Wipe the face of the power brake booster clean

where the vacuum seal on the rear of the master cyl-
inder comes in contact when it’s installed. Do not get
any cleaner or debris inside the booster.

CAUTION: When installing a master cylinder on the
vehicle, a NEW vacuum seal MUST be installed on
master cylinder (Fig. 91).

(3) If the master cylinder does not have a new vac-

uum seal installed on the mounting flange, remove it.
Install a NEW vacuum seal on the master cylinder
mounting flange making sure the seal fits squarely
in its groove (Fig. 91).

CAUTION: If resistance is met during master cylin-
der insertion into power brake booster, the master
cylinder push rod may not be lined up with the
booster push rod. Remove the master cylinder,
realign and insert it again.

(4) Line the master cylinder mounting holes up

with the mounting studs on the power brake booster.
Ensure the master cylinder piston push rod lines up
with the booster push rod, then carefully slide the
master cylinder into the power brake booster until it
contacts the face of the booster.
