(2) Place the exhaust system on two supports (one

on side of muffler, one behind the resonator). Connect
the system to the converter pipes.

(3) Install the system’s rubber isolators onto the

support brackets.

(4) Visually inspect the isolators. They should be

straight when viewing from front to back of the vehi-
cle. Working from the front of system, align each
component to maintain position and proper clearance
with underbody parts.

(5) Tighten band clamps to the proper torque.
(6) Lower the vehicle.

MUFFLER AND FRONT RESONATOR

REMOVAL

(1) Remove exhaust module and rear resonator/

pipe.

(2) Loosen clamp and separate rear resonator/pipe

from muffler.

INSTALLATION

(1) Install rear resonator/pipe onto new muffler/

resonator, but do not tighten clamp until exhaust
system is installed on vehicle.

(2) Install exhaust system. Refer to procedure out-

lined in this section.

(3) Tighten all exhaust band clamps to 61 N·m (45

ft. lbs.).

TAILPIPE/REAR RESONATOR

(1) With the exhaust system removed, loosen the

clamp of the tailpipe/rear resonator assembly to the
rear module (Fig. 2).

(2) Install the correct tailpipe/resonator assembly

onto the rear module and loose assemble the accom-
panying clamp.

(3) Install exhaust system. Refer to procedure out-

lined in this section.

(4) Tighten all band clamps to 61 N·m (45 ft. lbs.).

CATALYTIC CONVERTERS

RIGHT CATALYTIC CONVERTER

REMOVAL

(1) Raise vehicle on hoist.
(2) Remove exhaust system. Refer to procedure

outlined in this section.

(3) Loosen or remove nut attaching right pipe to

transaxle bracket.

(4) Loosen extension pipe band clamp.
(5) Remove right side converter extension pipe.
(6) Lower vehicle.

(7) Remove air cleaner assembly with air inlet

hose (Fig. 5).

(8) Remove SRV (Single Runner Valve) vacuum

reservoir and control valve assembly at right rear of
engine. (3.2L Engine Only)

(9) Remove fastener attaching exhaust pipe front

support to transaxle (Fig. 6).

(10) Disconnect downstream oxygen sensor connec-

tor and remove sensor from converter pipe.

(11) Loosen and remove V-Band clamp at exhaust

manifold.

NOTE: Do not reuse V-Band clamp.

(12) Remove converter from engine compartment.

INSTALLATION

(1) Position

a

NEW

V-Band

clamp

onto

the

exhaust manifold outlet. DO NOT latch the clamp’s
T-bolt at this time.

(2) Install catalytic converter. If necessary, stretch

open the V-Band clamp to allow the converter to
engage the manifold outlet.

(3) Latch the V-Band clamp T-bolt.
(4) Raise vehicle on hoist.
(5) Install right side converter extension pipe, but

do not tighten clamp at this time.

(6) Lower vehicle on hoist.

NOTE: Check for proper alignment and clearance
to underbody and engine compartment components
before tightening clamps.

(7) Tighten V-Band clamp to 11 N·m (100 in. lbs.).
(8) Install downstream oxygen sensor and connect

electrical connector.

(9) Install SRV (Single Runner Valve) vacuum res-

ervoir and control valve assembly at right rear of
engine. (3.2L Engine Only)

(10) Install air cleaner assembly with air inlet

hose.

(11) Raise vehicle on hoist.
(12) Tighten extension pipe band clamp to 61 N·m

(45 ft. lbs.).

(13) Install and/or tighten nut attaching extension

pipe to transaxle bracket to 47 N·m (35 ft. lbs.).

(14) Install nut attaching exhaust pipe front sup-

port to bracket on transaxle housing/differential
cover and tighten to 47 N·m (35 ft. lbs.) (Fig. 6).

(15) Install exhaust system. Refer to procedure

outlined in this section.

(16) Lower vehicle.

LEFT CATALYTIC CONVERTER

REMOVAL

(1) Loosen and remove V-Band clamp at exhaust

manifold joint.

NOTE: Do not reuse V-Band clamp.

(2) Hoist vehicle.
(3) Remove exhaust system. Refer to procedure

outlined in this section.

(4) Disconnect downstream oxygen sensor electri-

cal connector and remove sensor from converter pipe.

(5) Remove nut attaching left pipe to transaxle

bracket. Remove U-bracket and isolator from the
pipe hanger.

(6) Remove fastener attaching exhaust pipe front

support to transaxle (Fig. 8). This will provide
removal clearance.

CAUTION: Care should be taken when removing
converter not to damaged driveshaft boot.

(7) Remove converter from below vehicle.

INSTALLATION

(1) Install converter.
(2) Attach a NEW V-Band clamp and tighten to 11

N·m (100 in. lbs.).

(3) Install the front support U-bracket with isola-

tor onto pipe hanger. Install front support fastener
(Fig. 8).

(4) Install bolt attaching left pipe to transaxle rear

bracket.

(5) Install downstream oxygen sensor and connect

electrical connector.

(6) Install exhaust system.
(7) Lower vehicle.

INTAKE MANIFOLD—UPPER 2.7L

REMOVAL

(1) Disconnect negative cable from battery remote

jumper terminal.

(2) Remove air inlet resonator and inlet tube.
(3) Remove throttle cable and speed control cable

from throttle arm and bracket.

(4) Remove throttle cable bracket.
(5) Disconnect electrical connectors from the fol-

lowing components (Refer to Group 14, Fuel System
for component locations):

• Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor

• Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor

• Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Sensor

• Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
(6) Disconnect Vapor Purge hose, Brake Booster

hose, Speed Control Servo, Positive Crankcase Venti-
lation (PCV) hose.

(7) Remove EGR tube. Refer to Group 25, Emis-

sion Control System.

(8) Loosen upper fastener at throttle body support

bracket.

(9) Remove upper fasteners from support brackets

at right and left side of upper manifold (Fig. 9).

(10) Remove engine name cover from manifold by

applying upward pressure to release retaining clip.

(11) Remove manifold attaching bolts.
(12) Remove upper manifold.

INSTALLATION

(1) Clean and inspect sealing surfaces. Gaskets

can be reused, if free of cuts or tears.

NOTE: Make sure fuel injectors and wiring har-
nesses are in correct position to not interfere with
upper manifold installation

(2) Position upper manifold onto lower manifold.
(3) Install manifold attaching bolts and tighten in

sequence shown in (Fig. 10) to 12 N·m (105 in. lbs.).

(4) Install fasteners to right and left side support

brackets to manifold. Tighten lower fastener to 6
N·m (50 in. lbs.). Then tighten upper fastener to 12
N·m (105 in. lbs.).

(5) Install engine name cover to manifold.
(6) Tighten upper fastener at throttle body support

bracket.

(7) Install EGR tube to manifold. Refer to Group

25, Emission Control System.

(8) Connect speed control servo hose, PCV hose,

and vapor purge hoses.

(9) Connect electrical connectors to the following

components:

• Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor

• Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor

• Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Sensor

• Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
(10) Install throttle cable bracket.

(11) Install throttle and speed control cables to

bracket and throttle arm.

(12) Connect negative cable to battery remote

jumper terminal.

INTAKE MANIFOLD—LOWER 2.7L

REMOVAL

(1) Release fuel system pressure. Refer to Group

14, Fuel for System Pressure Release Procedure.

(2) Remove upper intake manifold. Refer to proce-

dure outlined in this section.

(3) Disconnect electrical connectors from the fuel

injectors.

(4) Remove fuel supply hose from fuel rail.
(5) Remove

bracket to the throttle body support bracket.

(6) Remove bolts attaching fuel rail.
(7) Remove fuel rail and injectors as an assembly.
(8) Remove manifold attaching bolts.
(9) Remove lower manifold.

INSTALLATION

(1) Clean and inspect sealing surfaces of cylinder

head and manifold. Gaskets can be reused provided
they are free of cuts or tears.

(2) Position manifold on cylinder head surfaces.
