A letter from an English Friend
Good day, How are you? I am writing to you hoping that we can become friends. My name is Jenny Blake. I am 20 years old. I am from Great Britain. I am looking for pen pals with similar interests and from any country. I live in a small village near Birmingham in England. There are 9 of us in my family: my parents, my grandma, my two brothers, my sister-in-law, my nephew, my sister and me. My parents Jim and Kate are 49 and 48 years old. They have a small business. They sell milk and meat products to some shops and supermarkets in our area. There are also 5 people who work for money at our farm. My granny Emma was a nurse at the local hospital but now she is retired. She is 75. She takes care of the family and cooks meals. My elder brother Thomas is 30. His wife is 28 years old. Her name is Betty. They have a little son Ronald. My parents and Granny adore him. My brother is a driver and Betty is a housewife. My brother Andy is 27 years old and he doesn’t live at the farm with us. He is a designer and works for a big company in London. He comes home every year for Christmas. My sister Mary is younger than me, she is 16. She goes to our local school. She is fun and very clever. She is good at biology and chemistry. Her dream is to become a pharmacist. As for me I help my parents with their work at the farm. But I am also a first year student at the University of Birmingham. My major is Computer Engineering. I participate in an online distance learning program. That means I take classes online and communicate with my professors and other students through the Internet. My teachers and fellow students live in different places. But twice a year I come to Birmingham and take my exams. I hope after graduating from the university I’ll work as a Software Designer. In my free time I go in for sports. I enjoy swimming and tennis. My sister and I also like riding our bikes. I don’t read a lot. I prefer going to the cinema. I often listen to the music from my iPod. It is mostly rock but sometimes classical music. Now I’m very interested in various cultures and would like to meet people from other countries. What is your name? Where are you from? How many people are there in your family? How old are they? What do they do? What are they like? What do they look like? What do you like doing in your free time? What are your plans for the future? Hope to hear from you soon, Jenny. 2.

ч. I - я my mine - мой his - его hers - ее its - его/ее Мн.
This is not my pencil, mine is blue. –

GENERAL
QUESTIONS
Do
you
speak
English
well
you
translate
this
article
without
a
dictionary
Has he been working since morning?
Will the work have been done by 5 o'clock?
Do you speak French? – Yes, I do. No, I don't.
Has she returned from Odessa? – Yes, she has. No, she hasn't.
Can you swim? – Yes, I can.
No, I can't.
или неужели?: Do you not know him?
(
Don
'
t
you
know
him
Have you not seen him?
(
Haven
'
t
you
seen
him
Didn't you speak to him yesterday? Yes, I did. No, I didn't.
Won

SPECIAL QUESTIONS
кто? what? что? какой? which? который? when? когда? where? где? куда? why? почему? how? как? how much? сколько? how long? When did the teacher read an interesting story to the students?
What did the teacher read to the students yesterday?
What story are you reading?
How many books did you buy?
When did the teacher read an interesting story to the students? – He read it to them yesterday.
кто? what? Who is standing at the window? – My sister is.
What book is lying on the table? – A French book is.
Who can do it? – I can.
Why did you not come yesterday? = Why didn't you come yesterday?
What does he not understand?
=
What
doesn
'
t
he
understand
?
Who hasn't seen this film yet?
Who doesn' know this rule?
POSSESIVE
CASE
-
in
-
chief
'
s
room

If you use a desktop computer, you already know that there isn't any single part called the «computer». A computer is a system of many parts working together. It is an electronic machine that accepts, processes, stores and outputs the information. The physical parts, which you can see and touch, are called hardware. Software, on the other hand, refers to the instructions, or programs, that tell the hardware what to do. There are the following types of hardware: · System unit The system unit
is the core of a computer system. Usually it is a rectangular box placed on or underneath your desk. Inside this box there are many electronic components that process information. The most important of these components is the central processing unit (CPU)
, or more commonly processor
, which acts as the «brain» of your computer. It processes the data and controls the activities of all the units. On large machines, CPUs require one or more circuit boards. On personal computers the CPU is placed on a single chip called a microprocessor. The CPU is an internal component of the computer. Modern CPUs are small and square and contain multiple metallic connectors or pins on the underside. The CPU is inserted directly into a CPU socket, pin side down, on the motherboard. Each motherboard supports only a specific type of CPU so you must check the motherboard manufacturer's specifications before attempting to replace or upgrade a CPU. Modern CPUs also have an attached heat sink and small fan that go directly on top of the CPU to help dissipate heat. Two typical components of a CPU are the following: - The arithmetic logic unit (ALU)
, which performs arithmetic and logical operations. - The control unit (CU)
, which extracts instructions from memory and decodes and executes them, addressing on the ALU when necessary. · Main memory The main memory contains the instructions and data that the CPU processes. It consists of two parts ROM
(read only memory) and RAM
(random access memory), which temporarily stores information that the CPU uses while the computer is on. The information stored in RAM is erased when the computer is turned off. · Peripherals Almost every other part of your computer connects to the system unit using cables. The cables plug into specific ports
, typically on the back of the system unit. These ports are different in shape and size. External units connected with a computer are called peripheral devices
. There are three types of peripherals: 1. Input devices that help us to enter data and commands, such as a keyboard and a mouse. 2. Output devices that we use to extract the results, such as a monitor, a printer and others. 3. Storage devices which are necessary to store the data. They are hard disks, DVD-drives, CD-drives and others. Disk drives are used to write data on disks and to read information from disks. 4.

DEGREES
OF
COMPARISON
)
The Dnieper is a long
The Volga is longer
than the Dnieper (longer — сравнительная степень) Волга длиннее Днепра The Volga is the longest
sharp
the)
sharpest
the)
coldest
the)
deepest
the)
strongest
busy
занятый busi
er
более занятый (the) busi
est
самый занятый easy
легкий easi
er
the)
easi
est

cleverest
the)
severest
r
и -
est
er
и -
est
er bigg
est hot горячий hott
er hott
est thin тонкий thinn
er thinn
est wet мокрый wett
er wett
est 6.
переходит в i
:
busy занятый busi
er busi
est easy легкий easi
er easi
est dirty грязный dirti
er dirti
est dry сухой dri
er dri
active
активный more
active
более активный, активнее (the) most active
самый активный famous
знаменитый more famous
более знаменитый (the) most famous
самый знаменитый difficult
трудный more
difficult
the)
most
difficult
удобный more comfortable
более удобный, удобнее (the) most comfortable
самый удобный interesting
интересный more
interesting
the)
most
interesting
This is the shortest way to the station. This is the most interesting story in this book. The Moscow underground is the best in the world.
— cleverer или more
clever, умнее
,
cleverest или most
clever самый
умный
;
lucky счастливый
— luckier или more
lucky счастливее
,
luckiest или most
lucky самый счастливый.
good
хороший better

Let me ask him. I know him better than you do. The situation was much worse than we expected. Let me know immediately if you hear any further news. I smoke more than I used to. We've got less time than I thought.
. Can you walk more slowly?
? !!! often – more often Исключение! Early – earlier – the earliest
,
many
,
far
=
a
lot
,
a
great
deal
,
a
bit
,
a
little

free time than I.
I have many more
books than he.
Could you speak a bit more slowly?
и least
less
pleasant менее приятный,
least
pleasant наименее приятный;
comfortable удобный,
less
comfortable менее удобный,
least
comfortable наименее удобный.
Местоимение that
,
This is the most interesting book (that) I have ever read.
It was the cheapest hotel (that)
She is one of the nicest people (that)
...
as
:
Не is as young as
my brother. My dictionary is as good as
